Feast: This weekend we celebrate our Feast Day, the Feast of the Holy Family—Jesus, Mary and Joseph. I really love the statues of the Holy Family in the niche in our Church. At some point we would like to get statues of the grandparents of Je-sus, Saints Anne and Joachim, on the other side (we would move the beautiful Our Lady of Guadalupe picture to our new chapel). Our Mother: I really love the fact that the Church cele-brates Mary, Mother of God on January 1. The Church wants all of us to dedicate the New Year through her. I’ve already given our building project over to her. This year, because January 1 falls on a Monday, the Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God, is not a holy day of obligation. We will have one Mass on New Year’s Day at 9 am. Hope to see you there. School begins: We welcome back our students on Wednesday, January 3. I’m sure they are all anxious to come back☺. I remember growing up as a child and enjoy-ing the Christmas break so much. I was in no hurry to come back to school. Weekday schedule: This weekday’s Mass schedule is a little different. We will have one Mass on Monday at 9 am for the Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God, and one Mass on Tuesday at 8 am, and then we resume our regu-lar schedule of 8 am and 5:30 pm Wednesday – Friday. Mexico: Fr. Dan will be gone this coming week. He is going on a mission trip to Mexico City with young adults as part of Renewal Ministries in Ann Arbor to work with and serve the poor. I’m excited because my niece and nephew will be on the trip too. Office: The office will reopen Tuesday, January 2. Planning ahead: A lot of us make New Year’s resolu-tions, especially when it comes to our health. That’s a good thing. The Church also offers some wonderful oppor-tunities to grow in our spiritual life, since all of us are body and spirit—not one or the other but both. ENDOW Women’s Study Group Are you looking for a group of women to pray, study and learn with?

Come and connect with a small group of women in faith and friendship as we study St John Paul’s Apostolic Letter “On the Meaning of Christian Suffering.” This apostolic letter invites women to approach the question of why God allows suffering and how we are to understand it and participate in it as a means to our sanctifica-tion. This is a difficult question for all people to come to terms with, and this ENDOW study takes us along with St. John Paul II as he explores the various ways we experience suffering. There is no homework involved.

No Drop-in - IMPACT meetings on Dec. 31st.

Drop-In is Back! The Drop-In Center, which is located in the St. Joseph Center, will be open on Tuesdays from 2:30 - 5:30 p.m. This is open to all high school students who are looking for a place to do homework, work on group projects, hang out, talk, etc. The center will be open on Tuesdays throughout the school year. We are also in need of volunteers to help out.

Thank you to our Knights of Columbus who provided a delicious dinner for the Bless the Baby Jesus event. We really appreciate you!

Students in Mrs. DeLoney's 5th grade class and Ms. Jones’ 6th grade class presented Janet Lane from Out-

reach with a check for $624 that they raised from the bake sale. Mrs. Lane told them about Outreach, what they do there, and will also give them a tour after the first of the

year. Thanks for your support of the bake sale. Mrs. Lane also thanked them for all the milk that was purchased for

the food baskets. They raised over $400 for that so every-one who came for a basket received a gallon of milk!

Members of IMPACT joined over 60 other teens at Holy Redeemer for a regional lock-in that featured speakers, Adoration and Reconciliation, music, games and food. Everyone had a great time!

Called and Gifted

God is calling you to a unique purpose in life, a work of love that only you can do.

Come learn about that call. Called and Gifted is designed to help you learn

about the charisms (spiritual gifts) given to you by the Holy Spirit at Baptism.

Who should attend Called & Gifted?

• Those who are asking the questions, “How is God call-ing me to live out my life as a disciple of Jesus? Where am I called to serve – not just in the parish but also in my family, my workplace, the world?”

• Anyone in transition: changing jobs, empty nesters, returning to the workplace or facing retirement.

• New or returning Catholics who want to explore what it means to live their faith as an adult.

What is presented at the Called and Gifted sessions?

• The teachings of the Church on how charisms of the Holy Spirit work in your life and in our parish.

• The signs and characteristics of 24 of the most com-mon charisms of the Holy Spirit.

• How discerning your charisms can change your own life.

• How discerning your charisms can change the world and help spread the Gospel.

• How discerning and using our charisms together can help transform and renew our parish.

• Steps for discerning the charisms God has given you.

Sessions will be held Tuesdays, January 9th, through March 20th, 2018.

Morning sessions - 10:00 - 11:30 am in the St. Joseph Center. Evening sessions - 6:30 - 8:30 pm in the Fr. Bush Center Small Hall.

Prayer Quilt Ministry Our Prayer Quilt Ministry team has added prayer shawls to our ministry. All crafters are welcome to join the ministry and craft a shawl whenever they are able. When finished with a shawl or for more information, please contact Geri Szydlowski at (810) 603-1690 or email [email protected]. Or attend our next meeting which is this Monday, January 8th, from 10 - 11:00 a.m. in the Fr. Bush Parish Center - small hall. (Meetings are typically the second Monday of each month.)

December 31: St. Sylvester St. Sylvester was elected pope in 314. He contributed greatly to the expansion of the Church after the peace of Constantine. He is the first saint not a martyr to be vener-ated in the Church.

January 1: Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God. The Council of Ephesus in 431 defended Mary’s title of Theotokos—God-bearer. Today we celebrate that Mary is the Mother of God. Through her, Christ our salvation was born. In Christ, Mary has also become our Mother. January 2: St. Basil the Great After studying various modes of religious life, he founded what was probably the first monastery in Asia Minor. He is to monks of the East what Saint Benedict is to the West; and Basil’s principles influence Eastern monasticism today was best known as an orator. Though not recognized greatly in his lifetime, his writings rightly place him among the great teachers of the Church. Seventy-two years after his death, the Council of Chalcedon described him as “the great Basil, minister of grace who has expounded the truth to the whole earth.”

January 4: St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Mother Seton is one of the keystones of the American Catholic Church. She founded the first American religious community for women, the Sisters of Charity. She opened the first American parish school and established the first

First Saturday Devotions The World Apostolate of Fatima Diocesan Morning of Prayer and Reparation for World Peace will be held at St. Mary Queen of Angels (4413 Morrish Rd., Swartz Creek) on Saturday, January 6th, at 9:00 a.m. The morning will include Divine Liturgy, Investiture in the Brown Scapular, Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament, Holy Hour of Prayer and Rosary.

American Catholic orphanage. All this she did in the span of 46 years while raising her five children. She died Janu-ary 4, 1821, and became the first American-born citizen to be beatified (1963) and then canonized (1975). She is bur-ied in Emmitsburg, Maryland.

January 5: St. John Neumann

John Neumann was born in what is now the Czech Repub-lic. After studying in Prague, he came to New York at 25 and was ordained a priest. He did missionary work in New York until he was 29, when he joined the Redemptorists and became its first member to profess vows in the United States. At 41, as bishop of Philadelphia, he organized the parochial school system into a diocesan one, increasing the number of pupils almost twentyfold within a short time. Well known for his holiness and learning, spiritual writing and preaching, on October 13, 1963, John Neumann be-came the first American bishop to be beatified.

January 6: St. Andre Bessette

At 25, André applied for entrance into the Congregation of the Holy Cross. After a year’s novitiate, he was not admit-ted because of his weak health. But with an extension and the urging of Bishop Bourget, he was finally received. He was given the humble job of doorkeeper at Notre Dame College in Montreal, with additional duties as sacristan, laundry worker and messenger. “When I joined this com-munity, the superiors showed me the door, and I remained 40 years,” he said.

Special Needs Mass The Diocese of Lansing, Office of Specialized Ministries and All Faith Ministry for disABILITIES collaborated to-gether on December 10 to sponsor a Special Needs Mass and Holiday Party. We even had a visit from Santa and Nana Claus! Please join us on Sunday, January 28th, for our next Mass at the St. Francis Retreat Center Chapel located at 703 E. Main Street in DeWitt.
