  • SECOND SUNDAY OF ADVENT 3 DECEMBER 6, 2020

    Fr. Jack

A voice cries out: In the desert

prepare the way of the LORD!

    Make straight in the wasteland

    a highway for our God!

Every valley shall be filled in,

    every mountain and hill shall be made low;

the rugged land shall be made a plain,

the rough country, a broad valley.

Then the glory of the LORD shall be revealed,

and all people shall see it together. Isaiah

“Prepare the way of the LORD!”

As I read Isaiah’s words from the 1st reading (for the

2nd Sunday of Advent) that talk about preparing the

world for the Lord’s arrival, I pondered how we, the

people of the 20th and 21st centuries, have been pre-

paring our world, our nation, our church, our families

and individually for the Lord’s coming. Are we really

prepared? Have we made “the wasteland a highway

    for God?”

Since our last Thanksgiving was affected by Covid-19, I

decided to celebrate it without exposing myself to

large gatherings. It felt that this was the only way to

protect everyone that I get in contact with at work,

church and school. I must say that it wasn’t easy to

decline all the invitations of my close friends who are a

“family abroad” to me. Nevertheless, I felt that the

best way to show gratitude this year was to stay home

and thank God for the people I wasn’t able to cele-

brate with due to the pandemic.

The extra time presented me with the opportunity to

do some reading. I came across several articles writ-

ten about the current state of our nation. One of them

in particular caught my attention. It was titled, “The

end of the American Dream.” The author based his

article on research done by Forbes that listed the

world’s top 10 places to move. Based on the info, the

citizens of only two countries listed the United States

as their top choice. It was the people from Russia and

Norway. Canada, on the other hand, was popular

among the people of 30 of the world’s nations and

Japan among 13. The articles that I have read men-

tioned many reasons why people look elsewhere for

the “American Dream.” They suggested that the values

and opportunities once found here, can still be found

but not anymore within our borders. I’m sure that we

can guess some of the reasons for people not choos-

ing the United States of America as their choice for a

new home. Raising violence. Social discords and divi-

sions. Declining quality of life. Lost values of family,

respect, equality and justice. Unemployment and di-

minishing job opportunities. Ever rising taxes. Pro-

longed naturalization process. Unsolved situation with

illegal immigrants that affects the general attitudes

    towards all immigrants.

It should not surprise us that the evils and misfortunes

that affect our society as a whole have also had a

great impact on our families and our church.

In the eyes of the outsider various factors seem to

make our country and church less desirable than in

the past but perhaps we are all equally responsible for

the current state of our nation, the church and family

life. So, how can we make our nation to be viewed

once again as a land of opportunities that everyone

wants to be a part of? How can we make our church

that is affected by individualism, message confusion,

scandals, internal conflicts, and disunity become a tru-

ly loving family that all want to belong to? What can we

do to make our families to be valued and treasured

more than national economy, individualism, career, or

    fortune?

Saint Peter tells us in the 2nd reading that as we are

awaiting new heavens and a new earth, we should ask

ourselves about what sort of person we should be. He

prompts us also to live lives of holiness and devotion

so that we are found before God without spot or

    blemish.

The season of Advent is a good time to ask ourselves,

what blemishes in my own life do I have to get rid of?

Our nation, our church and our families will be re-

newed and transformed as soon as we find the cour-

age to remove the dark spots from our own hearts.

    Blessed Advent,

    Fr. Jack

  • SECOND SUNDAY OF ADVENT 4 DECEMBER 6, 2020

Fr. Ron / IJP School / Religious Education

Advent calls us to "hope" and to

    "joyful" expectation. At the time

of Isaiah writing, the Jewish peo-

ple being in exile, felt discour-

    aged and hopeless. Thus Isaiah

wrote, knowing their sufferings, please bring com-

    fort to my people.

This Advent season we might feel more like the

Jewish people of old, discouraged and hopeless

because of the isolation of this pandemic. Isaiah's

writings are all the more relevant today. May we

spiritually bring comfort and support to each other,

    despite the call for isolation.

In comforting each other may we rediscover the

call of Advent to have hope and carry within our

heart the joyful expectation of Christ renewing our

    world.

    Stay safe, but be comforting.

    Father Ron

Days of Advent raffle where you can purchase tickets

to win beautiful baskets. Here are some great bas-

kets...keep them for your own enjoyment, take them

apart and use as stocking stuffers, or gift them to your

best people! Tickets are $5 each or 5 for $20. Here's

    how it works:

1.) Complete the form on IJP school’s website, indi-

cating how many tickets you would like to purchase for

each basket. Either choose "None" or "Other" and

write in the number of tickets you'd like.

2.) At the end of the form, you will total up the num-

ber of tickets you'd like to purchase and then add the

total amount of money you'll send in.

3.) Send in a check (to IJP School) or cash for the to-

tal number of tickets you purchased. You may also call

the school office (708-799-5200) and pay with a cred-

it card over the phone. Once payment is received,

your tickets will be added to the drawing for that par-

    ticular basket or baskets.

Religious Education Happy Advent IJP families and friends! We have been

talking in RE about the "Spirit of the Season". Advent is

a time to prepare ourselves for the coming of our Sav-

ior. Kids cannot do this on their own. Families are an

integral part of a child's faith formation! The Spirit of

the Season isn't about simply being happy or joyful for

Jesus, but is about giving from our hearts to others. As

a family this holiday season, I encourage you to do

things as a family that help aid to the "Spirit of the Sea-

son". This includes time spent together, creating gifts

from the heart, and counting down the days until the

birth of Jesus. Here are a few family fun ideas:

    1. Make your own Christmas Cards to send to family

    and neighbors.

    2. Decorate (or look at) your Christmas tree and

share favorite ornaments and stories behind them.

    3. Create a family Advent Chain with a different pray-

er or good deed to accomplish on each ring.

    4. Light an Advent wreath together every week.

    5. Make Christmas gifts for a different person in your

    family.

    6. Write a "Thank You" letter to Santa along with a

    Christmas list.

    7. Make and decorate a birthday cake for Jesus.

    8. Talk about the blessings and gifts you have re-

ceived from Jesus, and then what you plan on giv-

    ing Jesus in return.

    9. Create or draw your own Nativity scene.

    10. Snuggle up and watch a Christmas movie together.

I hope you all have a blessed and safe holiday season!

    Bridget Dingens

    RE Coordinator

4.) Each school day, beginning Monday, 12/7, the

winning ticket for one basket will be drawn. On Friday,

the winning ticket for two baskets will be chosen.

  • SECOND SUNDAY OF ADVENT 10 DECEMBER 6, 2020

    Second Sunday of Advent

    GOD’S DELAY

In times of great difficulties scoffers taunt us, “Where is

God? Why hasn’t your Lord come to save you now?”

And we of faith respond much in the same way as Pe-

ter did in today’s second reading: the “delay” of the

Lord’s second coming is not any type of punishment or

failure to keep the divine promise, but a loving sign of

God’s patience. God is giving everyone the chance to

    seek repentance.

God does not make life more difficult. Rather, God

lessens our burdens as once before for the Jewish ex-

iles returning home to Judea after captivity in Babylon.

It was God who personally led them, making a

“straight highway” for them across the desert.

We join with our ancestors of faith, who hoped that

they might see God’s Chosen One before them and

who eventually realized that the Lord was also walking

    with them side by side.

    FEAST OF FAITH

    Watching for Christ’s Coming

In the season of Advent, we look to the coming of

Christ at the end of time, and we prepare ourselves to

celebrate his first coming among us at Christmas. Re-

membrance of the past is combined with preparation

for the future. Memory meets action. In a certain sense,

the Mass is an Advent prayer. At the Last Supper, Je-

sus did not tell his disciples, “Never forget what I did

for you.” Instead, he said, “Do this in remembrance of

me.” He calls us to remember by doing, to combine

memory with action. In the celebration of the Eucha-

rist, remembering and doing become one. Jesus is as

present in our midst as he was in that upper room,

breaking the bread and sharing the cup; but it is a new

kind of presence, seen only with the eyes of faith. In

the heavenly liturgy, there will be no need of sacra-

ments, for there, “celebration is wholly communion

and feast” (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 1136).

Here, things are different. We have only glimpses and

flashes of the beauty that is yet to be. And yet, in the

liturgy, we truly participate in the heavenly liturgy. The

Mass is our foretaste of the joys of heaven.
