SEVENTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME 2 JULY 26, 2020
This week plans have been
finalized for an outdoor
Mass to be celebrated by
Bishop Perry and myself at
St. Rocco's Parish. Since
the medical world and sci-
ence have not found an answer to the Covid-19
pandemic, we are attempting to find a spiritual
solution by celebrating a votive Mass in honor of
St. Rocco, the Patron Saint of pandemics. This
Mass will be celebrated on Sunday, August 2,
2020 at 2:00 pm. Wear your mask and there will
be plenty of room for social distancing.
On a more festive note, the following weekend,
Sunday August 9th is the Taste of Polonia. This
open air picnic takes place on the Polish Fair-
grounds in Glenwood where I reside. Festive live
music, tasty foods, drinks, train rides, paddle boat
rides, bingo and much more. Admission is free. All
are welcome. (Location: Two blocks North of Glen-
wood Oaks Restaurant.) Wear your mask.
This weekend readings challenge us on how we
are to share with each other the Treasures of the
Kingdom of God. Praying together and celebrating
together certainly makes a great start.
Father Ron
“The kingdom of heaven is like a treasure buried in a
field, which a person finds and hides again…
The kingdom of heaven is like a merchant searching
for fine pearls…
The kingdom of heaven is like a net thrown into the
sea, which collects fish of every kind…”
Life shows that the search for treasures or valuable
pearls has led many people to lose their way. Count-
less lives, relationships, families, homes, and careers
have been lost because of greed. Numerous people
have chosen to sell their morals and their principles,
and even their souls, for more money. Therefore, the
comparisons that Jesus used for God’s Kingdom seem
unfitting, unless we know that in the ancient world
pearls were desired not simply for the value but, also,
for their beauty. This is why those who were lucky to
discover a pearl of great beauty, in order to possess it,
were willing to sell everything that they had.
What are we searching for in our own lives?
As we know, countless saints, like Francis of Assisi and
Mother Teresa, searched only for God’s Kingdom. They
were willing to abandoned not only some of their crav-
ings and possessions but everything. Are we willing to
let go of everything (or, at least, of some of what we
have) for God’s Kingdom? Are we willing to sacrifice
our own egos and ambition, desires and comfortable
living, time and wealth, pride and pleasure?
St. Augustine suggested that people wish to be happy
even when they so live as to make happiness impossi-
ble. I hope he wasn’t speaking about us.
Fr. Jack
“If we only had eyes to see and ears to hear
and wits to understand,
we would know that the Kingdom of God in the
sense of holiness, goodness, beauty
is as close as breathing and is crying out to born
both within ourselves and within the world;
we would know that the Kingdom of God is what we
all of us hunger for above all other things
even when we don’t know its name or realize that
it’s what we’re starving to death for.
The Kingdom of God is where our best dreams
come from and our truest prayers.
We glimpse it at those moments when we find our-
selves being better than we are and wiser than we
know.
We catch sight of it when at some moment of crisis a
strength seems to come to us that is
greater than our own strength.
The Kingdom of God is where we belong.
It is home, and whether we realize it or not, I think
we are all of us homesick for it.”

Deacon Jim / TGIF
Mission Statement: We, the Teens Growing in Faith
(TGIF), will strengthen our beliefs and values through
the connection with our faith, God and service to
others.
Teens Growing in Faith (TGIF) provides high school
teens of IJP Parish the opportunity to engage in
spiritual, service and social growth by participating in
this ministry.
On May 3rd, TGIF (Teens Growing in Faith) would have
had their Graduates Mass where we would welcome
the newly confirmed 8th graders of the parish and
honor our high school seniors of our parish.
This year we were unable to gather as a community for
this very special celebration. I am happy to announce
that we will be having a special “Send off Mass” for
our “soon to be” college freshmen on Sunday, August
2nd at the 11:00 am Mass. I invite all of the Class of
2020 to attend this Mass in your honor.
If you would like to attend this Mass, please register as
soon as possible using THIS LINK, or visit ijpparish.org
and click on “Make a reservation for Mass.”
We will be inducting our new TGIF Teen Leadership
group, as well welcoming our newly confirmed stu-
dents at our first Teen Mass in October. More infor-
mation on that and all TGIF events to follow.
Please continue to keep all of our college students in
your prayers as they begin their journey back to school,
as well as our high school students. We pray for their
health and safety during these uncertain times.
Mrs. Trish Ladner
Youth Minister
For the past several weeks Matthew’s Gospel has
focused on Jesus speaking to us in parables, and
each week we have been presented with the op-
portunity to stretch our imagination. We have tak-
en simple exercises and broadened them to cre-
ate images that help us understand, picture, and
feel the excitement Our Lord wants us all to enjoy.
For most of us, these parables have caused us to
dream; dream about what Jesus was telling his
followers, then and now. This week, it’s about
finding a great treasure and another about finding
a valuable pearl. These stories help us to under-
stand the true value of the greatest treasure, eter-
nal life in the kingdom of God. These parables
told us that those involved were willing to give up
everything to possess those gifts. That got me
thinking, are there treasures I have found that I
will keep at all costs? Do I consider them treas-
ures? Let’s start with the obvious, family. What
about my freedom and liberty? And I can’t forget
my faith. As a Catholic I have the Mass, the Sacra-
ments, the Eucharist, the rituals and the faith
community.
The COVID 19 pandemic came on the scene this
year and has forced us into a continuous quaran-
tine, but it has also helped us discover other
treasures we may have taken for granted like our
police and fire departments, emergency medical
responders, doctors, nurses, pharmacists, hospi-
tal staffs and first responders who serve the com-
mon good. They may not be what we might con-
sider treasure equal to eternal life, but they have
all made this life a better place and a preview of
heaven.
I pray we never lose sight of these treasures and
never discard them as not worth our love and re-
spect.
Deacon Jim

CORONAVIRUS PRAYER
Lord Jesus Christ, you travelled through towns and
villages curing every disease and illness. At your
command, the sick were made well. Come to our aid
now, in the midst of the global spread of the corona-
virus, that we may experience your healing love.
Heal those who are sick with the virus. May they re-
gain their strength and health through quality medi-
cal care.
Heal us from our fear, which prevents nations from
working together and neighbors from helping one
another. Heal us from our pride, which can make us
claim invulnerability to a disease that knows no bor-
ders. Lord Jesus Christ healer of all, stay by our side
in this time of uncertainty and sorrow.
Be with those who have died from this virus. May
they be at rest with You in Your eternal peace. Be
with the families of those who are sick or have died.
As they worry and grieve, defend them from illness
and despair. May they know Your peace.
Be with the doctors, nurses, researchers and all
medical professionals who seek to heal and help
those affected and who put themselves at risk in
the process. May they know Your protection and
peace.
Be with the leaders of all nations. Give them the
foresight to act with charity and true concern for the
well-being of the people they are meant to serve.
Give them the wisdom to invest in long-term solu-
tions that will help prepare for or prevent future out-
breaks. May they know Your peace, as they work
together to achieve it on earth.
Whether we are home or abroad, surrounded by
many people suffering from this illness or only a
few, Lord Jesus Christ stay with us as we endure
and mourn, persist and prepare. In place of anxiety,
give us Your peace. Lord Jesus Christ, heal us.
AMEN.
