The Gerer Rebbe began class by asking his students about a classmate who wasn’t there that day. “How’s

Moshe Chaim doing?” The students didn’t know. “What?” asked the Rebbe. “You don’t know? You pray

under the same roof. You study together. How can you tell me you don’t know how Moshe Chaim is,

whether he needs help or advice or comforting? How can that be?”

If the Gerer Rebbe (the first) were a contemporary rabbi the story would have no meaning. Today, unless

we are friendly with someone in our congregation, the odds of us knowing if she or he is ill, or in need of

help, are very slim. Of course, we would willingly help if asked, as evident by how quickly TBA volunteers sign up to help

through our Lotsa Helping Hands group. However, the reality is that we are meaningfully involved in the life of only a

relatively small group of people. But when we think about the Golden Age of the Jewish communities at the time of the Gerer

Rebbe, almost 200 years ago, we tend to assume that they were all involved in each other’s lives.

And here is the big problem. If even at the time when all Jews belonged to the synagogue and attended Services every Shabbat

(most men daily), it was still easy for members of the community to be overlooked, what should we expect today when our

congregants rarely pray together or learn together?

A synagogue that describes itself as “one big family” is either a true miracle, or simply overstretches the euphemism. Hundreds

of families cannot form one big family. But ten families can live in a way that genuinely feels and acts like an extended one.

This is the idea behind a havurah. Rabbi Harold Schulweis, a pillar of the Conservative Jewish Movement, successfully

established havurot in his synagogue many years ago. He did it when he realized that the primary task on the agenda of the

synagogue is not rituals and theology, but what he called “the humanization and personalization of the temple”. To experience

true belonging is an imperative prerequisite for the cultivation of religious and moral sensibilities.

At TBA we talk a lot about the importance of tearing down the boundaries between Jews and synagogues. We work hard to

make it easy for people to join our Temple; now we are going to work even harder to help them to belong. The formation of

havurot is an important step to achieve this goal. A havurah is a small group of Temple members who come together to

socialize, to learn and enjoy Jewish living with their families. They celebrate Jewish Holidays together, eat together, study

together, and worship together. For many, the havurah really turns into an extended family. The beauty of the havurah is that it

offers the synagogue member a community small enough to enable personal relationships to develop, and to express their

Jewishness their own way.

I believe that when the havurah endeavor with initiative works, our synagogue itself will gradually be transformed into a

“Havurah of Havurot”, a Jewish assembly in which havurot meet for worship, study and celebration, not as isolated men and

women.

When the Gerer Rebbe asked about Moshe Chaim, not everyone at the temple knew how he was doing. But rest assured that

members of his havurah were taking care of all his needs, like extended families do.

Temple Beth Am 3 September 2014

FROM THE PRESIDENT Mark Slifkin

Summer is over and the kids are back in school and it is that time of the year on the Jewish calendar. At least

this year the High Holy Days do not occur over Labor Day weekend! Clergy and staff are busy preparing for

this year, and I for one am looking forward to Rabbi Alon’s intriguing and interesting sermons. Normally the

High Holy Days are a time of deep reflection, BUT this year even more so given the situation in Israel as we

all pray for peace and safety for Israelis and our congregants who have children, relatives and friends in Israel.

Special thanks to Cubby Steinhart for his recent IDF support in Israel and IDF Lone Soldier Hannah Rosenberg, daughter of

congregants David & Mary Rosenberg – we have had many other congregants provide similar support to the IDF.

As you will note from the recent mailing, we are again offering an early Service so that ALL in our large Jewish community

who wish to attend, pray and reflect during the High Holy Days can do so. As a note of information, last year our Children’s

Services (the Children’s Service for the little ones and our “Time and Place Just for Kids” program for kids K-5) were attended

by almost 350 children – let’s increase that! I am sure this year’s will be even more exciting – thanks to Rabbi Alon, Cantor

Jessica, Brett Tancer, David Sherman and Alisssa Frankel.

.

There is still time to get in your information and reservations for the Yizkor Book, Selichot Dinner, Complimentary Baby

Sitting and Sisterhood Flower fund - but you need to do so ASAP.

High Holy Days Fact

Another TBA factoid from our TBA volunteers Marcy Isdaner, Robin Schafler, Debby Baker and Audrey Ades - last year

we donated 1,500 pounds of non-perishable food to Alpert Jewish Family Services from our High Holy Days Food Drive on

Yom Kippur. How about if each of us brings one additional package so we can get closer to 1,750 pounds this year!

TBA Recent Events

Special thanks to Zac Kushner and the Men’s Club volunteers (too many to list) for a fantastic pool party at the Burn’s Road

Complex. A very special congratulations to Ben Levkovitz, winner of the blueberry pie-eating contest. You really need to

look at the picture on the TBA Facebook page. If you are not a TBA Facebook member – please join our Facebook page for

information and activities for TBA and The One School.

We are continuing the new communications look thanks to Carol Sleeper, Debbie Baseman, Zac Kushner and our PR

Consultant, Greg Dubois, of Bella Group. I have just seen the draft of the new TBA ‘Who Are We’ (a communication to TBA

members and the Jewish Community) and it is amazing. Our revised member recognition program will also be released during

the High Holy Days. Well what do you think of the new sod, shrubs and parking pavers? Let us hear from you. Contact Jerry Holinstat with other

ideas to improve our facilities.

Many classrooms have been painted and the building spruced up to improve our appearance – our wonderful building is over 7

years old and needs some TLC.

REMINDERS – Your High Holy Days tickets will be mailed shortly. If you do not receive them or wish to buy additional

tickets please call the office. Along with your tickets will be your High Holy Days Pledge Card. This is one of the 3 times/year

we ask for voluntary financial support (the other two are Membership and Spring Drive). Please generously provide your

support so we can continue to provide all the activities and programming for TBA and the Jewish Community.

Our Board member names are always listed on the first page of the Scribe – talk to them anytime about your thoughts,

suggestions and ideas – our tag line ALL OF US TOGETHER only works if we have YOUR input!

Scribe articles are great and contain interesting tidbits about TBA – enjoy them. Call me at 561-222-8350 if you have ANY

questions or just wish to chat. Email works also: [email protected].

L’Shanah Tovah. לשנה טובה Happy and Healthy 5775, from our family to each of you and your families. Looking forward to greeting all of you during the

High Holy Days.

BOOK CLUB Edie Wolf

The TBA Book Club is an informal group that meets four times a year on Mondays at 10:30am at the Temple. We

usually go out for lunch afterwards. Edie Wolf, the new chairperson, will send out email reminders of upcoming dates

and the books we will read. If you have not attended the book club before but would like to receive email reminders

about upcoming meetings, please contact Edie to give her your contact information. Any questions or suggestions may

be directed to Edie at [email protected] or 443-223-9729.

Temple Beth Am Book Club Selections 2014-2015

November 3: JOY COMES IN THE MORNING – Jonathan Rosen - Deborah Green is a woman of passionate

contradictions--a rabbi who craves goodness and surety while wrestling with her own desires and with the sorrow and

pain she sees around her. Her life changes when she visits the hospital room of Henry Friedman, an older man who has

attempted suicide. His parents were murdered in the Holocaust when he was a child, and all his life he’s struggled with

difficult questions. Deborah’s encounter with Henry and his family draws her into a world of tragedy, frailty, love, and,

finally, hope. [Paperback: 400 pages]

January 5: MY 15 GRANDMOTHERS – Genie Milgrom – The author takes the reader through an exciting maze of

intrigue, where literally every stone that is turned yields a new twist in the author’s personal journey. Having been

brought up in a Roman Catholic family in Cuba and descending from Spanish ancestry did not ensure that her life

would be lived within that realm. In response to strong feelings and an affinity towards Judaism, her search for her

family’s past took on a deeper significance as she researched her maternal lineage and discovered and documented her

Pre-Inquisition Spanish roots to Fifteenth Century Spain and Portugal where they lived first as Jews, then as Crypto

Jews and finally as Roman Catholics. She was able to unravel the web of lies and deceit that her family had spun in

order to survive the Spanish Inquisition. They lived with one foot in each world as they converted to Catholicism

openly while secretly practicing their own religion underground. [Paperback: 164 pages]

March 2: THE MUSEUM OF EXTRAORDINARY THINGS – Alice Hoffman - the story of an electric and

impassioned love between two vastly different souls in New York during the volatile first decades of the twentieth

century. Coralie Sardie is the daughter of the sinister impresario behind The Museum of Extraordinary Things, a Coney

Island boardwalk freak show that thrills the masses. Coralie appears as the Mermaid in her father’s “museum”. One

night Coralie stumbles upon a striking young man taking pictures of moonlit trees in the woods off the Hudson River.

The dashing photographer is Eddie Cohen, a Russian immigrant who has run away from his father’s Lower East Side

Orthodox community and his job as a tailor’s apprentice. When Eddie photographs the devastation on the streets of

New York following the infamous Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire, he becomes embroiled in the suspicious mystery

behind a young woman’s disappearance and ignites the heart of Coralie. [Hardcover: 384 pages]

April 27: WONDER OF WONDERS: A CULTURAL HISTORY OF FIDDLER ON THE ROOF – Alisa

Solomon - An eye-opening history of the Broadway musical that changed the world. In the half-century since its

premiere, Fiddler on the Roof has had an astonishing global impact. Award-winning drama critic, Alisa Solomon, traces

how and why the story of Tevye the milkman, the creation of the great Yiddish writer Sholem-Aleichem, was reborn as

blockbuster entertainment and a cultural touchstone. It is a story of the theater, following Tevye from his humble

appearance on the New York Yiddish stage, through his adoption by leftist dramatists as a symbol of oppression, to his

Broadway debut in one of the last big book musicals, and his ultimate destination—a major Hollywood picture.

Solomon reveals how the show spoke to the deepest conflicts and desires of its time: the fraying of tradition,

generational tension, the loss of roots. Audiences everywhere found in Fiddler immediate resonance and a usable past,

whether in Warsaw, where it unlocked the taboo subject of Jewish history, or in Tokyo, where the producer asked how

Americans could understand a story that is “so Japanese.” [Hard cover: 448 pages]

RELIGIOUS SCHOOL David Sherman, MJEd

Director of Education

Shalom!

Please remember our children’s safety – do NOT stop by the Temple entrance to drop off your child, but rather drive to a

parking spot, park, and walk your child into the Temple. Besides the safety issue – this is a really nice way to start your days!

Every Sunday morning starts off with JAMTY Café providing bagel breakfasts for a nominal fee, which tastes great and

also benefits our youth programming at TBA. The Café opens @ 9:00am and serves students until 9:25am, and parents

throughout the morning. Classes run from 9:30am – 11:40am, when we all gather for prayer, song, and community at our

rousing Kehillah, which concludes at noon. Parents are welcome to join us- we only ask that no students are taken out of

Kehillah early as this disrupts the mood that we all work so hard to create- thanks! Sunday students are dismissed directly

from the Sanctuary following Kehillah – first the younger ones are picked up at their seats, and then we dismiss the older

students, ensuring that the safety of all is primary.

Tuesday Religious School classes start on September 9th. For those new student families, please note that we serve pizza

and healthy snacks from 4:30pm – 4:50pm to give our students that extra bit of fuel they need to keep active and alert.

Tuesday classes run from 5:00pm – 6:30pm, with students being picked up from the classrooms. Again, as on Sundays,

we ask that you do not pick your children up early unless absolutely necessary (in which case please inform the Director or

teacher ahead of time). Sunday classes start on September 7th, for K – 2nd grade only, to give them a calmer first day.

Shalom Chai, our (no longer) new community Jewish High School will welcome students on September 9th, at 6:30pm.

We welcome all Jewish teens attending 8th - 12th grades for both formal and informal education. Our program blends

classroom learning, service learning (doing Social Action), and plenty of teen interaction. We are excited about this program

and hope that you are, too. Please give me a call, drop me an email, or visit the Temple website if you would like more info

on Shalom Chai. Classes run from 6:30pm – 8:30pm and the evening even includes a light dinner break! 7th graders also

attend Shalom Chai on Tuesday evenings, which, for them, includes a special prayer readiness elective with Cantor Jessica,

so they can keep their Hebrew skills sharp for their ‘big’ day!

We will not hold classes on Sunday, October 5th, giving everyone an extra day of rest to reflect (after Yom Kippur). Those

who wish to help erect this year’s Sukkah are invited to join the fun- the Men’s Club will once again lead us in our Sukkah

building, starting at 8:00am.

Here are some ‘save the dates’ for September and October:

Sunday, Sept. 7: 1st Day K-2; All school assembly 9:30am – 9:45am; Parent Orientation 9:45am – 10:30am; stay &

schmooze 10:30am – 10:45am;

introductions

Tuesday, Sept. 16: Parent Q & A / Orientation for 3rd - 6th: 5:00pm – 5:30pm

Sunday, Sept. 28: (during RS) Kindergarten, 1st & 2nd grade JFE program at Busch Wildlife Sanctuary

Sunday, Oct. 5: No Religious School – Men’s Club puts up Sukkah!

Friday Night, Oct. 17: Simchat Torah celebration (during Shabbat Services)

Saturday, Oct. 25: 6th Grade Families at Rabbi’s house (3:00pm – 5:00pm)

Please note that we have updated our TBA website (www.templebetham.com) to include lots of action photos of our students,

up to date calendar / programming information, curricular information, Hebrew prayers that can be listened to and

downloaded to your favorite PDA’s, and much, much more! For those of you who are into social networking, and you know

who you are, please visit our Temple Facebook page- Temple Beth Am, Jupiter (please remember the comma after ‘Beth

Am’).

Lastly, please feel comfortable to contact me any time to discuss our Religious School – together (kulanu), we can make this

the best experience for our children.

YOUTH ENGAGEMENT Alissa Frankel, Youth Director

September is a busy month for everyone. School has started back up, traffic is heavier, youth

group programs are here, and football is back on TV… Truthfully, it is just that time of year to

get back into the swing of things!

While your swinging, don’t forget about the High Holy Days too! Thankfully the High Holy Days fall a little later this year

than last, allowing us a little more time to take in the meaning of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. This is a time of new

beginnings, forgiveness, and reflection.

Revisit, reenergize, or change completely one or all of the New Year’s resolutions you may have set in January. Around

your Rosh Hashanah dinner table, share one of those resolutions – one thing you want to do differently, better, more or less

of. Use this opportunity to positively motivate, inspire, and encourage one another throughout the year to help everyone

reach their personal resolution.

Some of the things I am looking forward to most this new year is working with our JAMTY board and our other youth

group's leaders and participants, getting to know everyone, and creating a year of lasting memories.

I will send out bi-weekly e-mails with the upcoming events for all three youth groups; in addition, join our Facebook group

JAMTY/JAMTY Jr. for the most up-to-date information and pictures from our events!

L’Shanah Tovah!

BAT MITZVAH OF

ALLISON KLEINFELD

We are proud to announce that our daughter, Alexandra Lily Berman, will be called to

the Torah as a Bat Mitzvah on September 13, 2014.

Alex is an honor student at Jupiter Middle School and was recently inducted into the

National Junior Honor Society.

Alex’s passion is dance. She has studied ballet, pointe, contemporary, jazz and modern

since she was three years old. She has been a member of the FSDE Performance Company for several years. Alex enjoys

summer camp at Camp Eisner in Great Barrington, MA.

For her Mitzvah Project, Alex raised money for The Mazon Organization (a program to relieve hunger) by collecting and

selling clothing to Plato’s closet.

In her free time, Alex enjoys spending time with friends and family.

We would like to thank Rabbi Alon, Cantor Jessica, Brett, David and all of Alex’s teachers at Temple Beth Am for helping

to prepare her for this day.

We invite the congregation to join us as we celebrate Alex’s accomplishment.

Nancy and Doug Berman

It is with much pride and joy that we announce the Bat Mitzvah of our daughter Allison Paige

Kleinfeld on September 6, 2014.

Allie is in the eighth grade at the Benjamin School which she has attended since she was in

Pre-K. Allie loves to dance. She was on the Benjamin Middle School Dance Team last year

and was thrilled to be chosen for the Coaches Award at the end of the season. She will be

trying out for the team again this year and hopes to continue to excel in dance. Allie also loves

to sing and is taking voice and piano lessons. Allie does enjoy playing sports too. She has

played on both the Benjamin lacrosse and basketball teams in past seasons. During the

summer, Allie's home away from home is Camp Romaca in The Berkshires in

Massachusetts. She has been a camper there for the past five summers. During the school year, she counts down the days

until she can be back at Camp Romaca and be a camper again and reunited with her friends. During Allie's free time, she

enjoys spending time with her family and friends, going to the movies, beach and shopping at the mall.

For her Mitzvah Project, Allie will be assisting with Temple Beth Am's Food Pantry. The food pantry works diligently

throughout the year making sure that no one in our community goes hungry. She will be finding sources of food, sorting and

distributing the food, picking up bread and pastries at the greenmarket and getting donations of non perishable items.

We are very proud of Allie and the young woman that she is becoming. We would like to thank Rabbi Alon, Cantor Jessica,

Brett Tancer, David Sherman and the Religious School staff for helping Allie prepare for this special day.

Allie's brother Jake and sister Nicole, along with the rest of her family, can't wait to share this special day with her.

ALEXANDRA BERMAN

Temple Beth Am 24 September 2014

With great love and joy, we are proud to announce the Bar Mitzvah of our son, Alexander

James (AJ), on September 20, 2014.

AJ is a 7th grader at The Weiss School, where he has accomplished High Honor Roll/Honor

Roll every quarter and has been accepted into the National Junior Honor Society. In

addition to his academic achievements at The Weiss School, he is a member of the Duke

Tip Program and The Johns Hopkins Center for Talented Youth. Furthermore, AJ had the

honor of being nominated to attend the Junior National Young Leaders Conference this

past summer in Washington, DC. Outside of school, AJ’s main interests are Taekwondo

and playing soccer. AJ is a black belt in Taekwondo and has competed in many

tournaments including the 2014 Florida State Taekwondo Tournament. Most recently, he

received a silver medal for Taekwondo at the Sunshine Games in Lakeland, Florida. AJ loves soccer and has been playing in

travel soccer programs for the past 5 years.

AJ’s Mitzvah project is one that he started 4 years ago. Since he was 9 years old, AJ has handed out flyers annually to

residents in our community requesting candy donations for children who were unable to celebrate Halloween in a traditional

way due to varying circumstances. Each year, through the generosity of his neighbors, he has been able to make over 150

individual bags of candy and bring them to St. Mary’s Children’s Hospital, Quantum House, POST, St. George’s Soup

Kitchen, and the Lord’s Place.

We are very proud of our son AJ for always working hard to accomplish all of his goals.

We would like to thank Rabbi Alon, Cantor Jessica, Brett Tancer, David Sherman, Debbie Baseman, and AJ’s teachers for

their help and support in preparation for this special day.
