Introduction: Sanctification

Chain the Catechism: A topical study through the Lutheran confessions

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.I believe that I cannot by my own reason or strength believe in Jesus Christ, my Lord, or come to Him; but the Holy Spirit has called me by the Gospel, enlightened me with His gifts, sanctified and kept me in the true faith.

In the same way He calls, gathers, enlightens, and sanctifies the whole Christian church on earth, and keeps it with Jesus Christ in the one true faith. In this Christian church He daily and richly forgives all my sins and the sins of all believers. On the Last Day He will raise me and all the dead, and give eternal life to me and all believers in Christ.

Discussion“Christ says very definitely, the Holy Spirit will witness of me, of me and not of someone else. Beyond this witness of the Holy Spirit about Christ there is no sure and abiding comfort. That is why one should write the words ‘of me’ with capital letters and diligently remember them. For of this we may be certain, that the Holy Spirit promotes no other doctrine, preaches neither Moses nor other laws whereby to comfort the conscience. If the conscience is to be comforted, it can only be by the preaching of Christ’s death and resurrection – this alone comforts. In contrast, all other preaching of law, good works, holy living, whether commanded by God or men, is incapable of comforting a person in times of need and death; instead it leaves him uncertain and in despair, frightened and tormented. If we consider God without Christ, we find no comfort but only righteous wrath and displeasure. But whoever preaches Christ proclaims and brings true comfort, so that it will be impossible for hearts not to be joyous and of good cheer.

1. Ruach/Pneuma: Hebrew word for Spirit, Greek word for “wind” used for Divine intervention, inspiration, and 3rd person trinity involvement.

2. Pneumatology: Study of the Holy Spirit, His origin, role, historical development, and function for the Church.

3. Sanctum: Holiness that sets one apart, as a flame.

4. Sanctification: To be made holy through and by the Spirit of God. This has both declarative fullness (Justification) and disciplined development Sanctification)

3rd Art. Sanctification: Terms Defined

Page 7: 11.05.27 2nd article 3rd article intro

Three problems define the development of the Doctrine of Sanctification:1. The relation of the grace of God in sanctification to

faith2. the relation of sanctification to justification3. the degree of sanctification in this present life.

Sanctification is one of the clearest CONFUSIONS represented in the early church, through the middle ages, and further protestant movements. The Lutheran movement represents one of the only

clearly distinguished developments between justification and sanctification regarding the nature of man, works and Spirit.

However, through our study of scripture, a strong case will be made for the Lutheran confession regarding the place of the Spirit, Fruits, and the Church.

3rd Art. Sanctification: Historical Context

Page 8: 11.05.27 2nd article 3rd article intro

Post-Nicene Church (300-700 c.)1. Justification and Sanctification not clearly distinguished. (except in Augustine

and Ambrose, which become foundation for Luther).2. Thus, good works, legalism, and sacramentalism naturally rose to prominence

(especially as a result of political context).3. Asceticism, both eremitic and Benedictine, became the glamour rock within

Christianity Middle-Ages (900-1300)

1. Aquinas develops the substantiation of Grace through sacramental merit. (the more you work and do ecclesiastical duty, the greater infusion of grace you receive).

2. This leads to “priestcraft,” indulgences, penance, etc. Reformation (1500-1600’s) Luther does the following:

1. Rejects the lens of nature and supernature (being a super-Christian)2. Develops the idea of Sanctification as the antithesis of sin and redemption; S.

becomes a re-creative work of the moral nature of man.3. Keeps close connection to the two doctrines despite precision.

Wesleyan and Modern developments (1700s-present)1. With the definitional framework in place, an increased emphasis on “preveniant

grace” becomes prominent. Bodies begin resorting to pietism, synergism and emphasis “Christian Perfection” through worship and acts of good works.

2. Sacraments are rejected as a gift of the spirit, and are redefined as ordinance of Christian discipline.

3rd Art. Sanctification: Historical Context

Page 9: 11.05.27 2nd article 3rd article intro

From Scripture, I want you to think about the three questions:1. The relation of the grace of God in

sanctification to faith2. the relation of sanctification to

justification3. the degree of sanctification in this present

life. How does the answer to these questions

relate to the following:1. The gifts and role of the Spirit of God2. The church and its community3. The word and sacrament4. Inspiration, knowledge, and

enlightenment.

3rd Art. Sanctification: Defend the Sanctification!

What does this mean? I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian church, the communion

of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

I believe that I cannot by my own reason or strength believe in Jesus Christ, my Lord, or come to Him; but the Holy Spirit has called me by the Gospel, enlightened me with His gifts, sanctified and kept me in the true faith.

May the very God of all things, who spoke by the Holy Spirit, through the prophets, and sent Him forth upon the apostles in Jerusalem on the day of Pentecost, send Him forth now upon you also. May He guard us through the Spirit, imparting His bounty in common to all of us, so as to exhibit always the fruits of the Holy Spirit: charity, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faith, mildness, chastity, in Christ Jesus our Lord. Through Christ, and with Him, together with the Holy Spirit, be glory to the Father, now and always and forever and ever. Amen. (Cyril of Jerusalem, c. 315-87)
