1. Holy Spirit, light divine, Shine upon this heart of mine;

Chase the shades of night away, Turn the darkness into day.

2. Let me see my Savior’s face, Let me all His beauties trace;

Show those glorious truths to me Which are only known to Thee.

3. Holy Spirit, pow’r divine, Cleanse this guilty heart of mine; In Thy mercy pity me, From sin’s bondage set me free.

4. Holy Spirit, joy divine, Cheer this saddened heart of mine; Yield a sacred, settled peace, Let it grow and still increase.

5. Holy Spirit, all divine, Dwell within this heart of mine; Cast down ev’ry idol throne, Reign supreme, and reign alone.

Discussion: Montanus, Sound Familiar?Montanus, “Prophesied under the influence of the Spirit". Claiming to be the voice of the Holy Spirit, he announced the fulfillment of the New Testament promise of the Pentecost and the imminent Second Coming of Christ. He was soon joined by two young women, Prisca and Maximilla, who left their husbands and also began to prophesy.

Montanus:'I am neither an angel nor an envoy, but I the Lord God, the Father, have come'. Such pronouncements were made still more impressive by the manner in which they were presented. According to Epiphanius, a ceremony was held frequently in the churches of Pepuza when 7 virgins, dressed in white and carrying torches, entered and proceeded to deliver oracles to the congregation. Eusibius comments that 'they manifest a kind of enthusiasm that dupes those who are present, and provokes them to tears, leading to repentance'.

3rd Art. Holy Spirit: John 14:16-26If you love me, keep my commands.  And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever— 17 the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be[c] in you. 18 I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you. But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you. 27 Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.

1. para/klhtov: One who continually intercedes between two people. Christ before the Father, Spirit between us and Christ.

2. pneuma thv alhqeiav: Spirit of Truth, phrase that harkens to OT personifcation of Wisdom

3. o¹rfano/v: Orphans without a Father.

4. pneuma to agion: Holy Spirit5. dida/skw, u(pomimnh: To

Three problems define the development of the Doctrine of Sanctification:1. The relation of the grace of God in sanctification

to faith2. the relation of sanctification to justification3. the degree of sanctification in this present life.

Three problems also arise in the understanding of the Holy Spirit?1. Is the Spirit a deity?2. Is the Spirit a Person, an emotional/intellectual

influence, or a general force?3. What is the extent of the Spirit’s inspiration and

activity in human affairs? In/oustide of Scripture?

3rd Art. Holy Spirit: Historical Context

Page 8: 11.06.03 3rd article holy spirit person and work pt 1

Ante-Nicene Period (150-325 ce) Early assumption of personhood of HS based on Apostolic writings 3 Early challenges to orthodoxy:

1. Ancient Gnosticism defining HS as an intellectual force that doesn’t function in the corporeal world. Adherants: Early church influence in Ephesus, Corinth

2. Montanism develops importance on individual and continued revelation, dieting/fasting, and HS equivocation with individuals. Adherants: Montanus, Prisca, Maximilla, Tertullian

3. Arianism develops a progression of creation (Father creates the Son, the Son creates the HS). HS is not co-eternal, equal, or co-persons in the Trinity. Adherants: Arius and approx. 20% of Church

Middle Ages (800-1400 ce) Divergence between scholasticism (Thomistic philosophy) and mysticism (ineffable union with God through prayer

and meditation) Meister Ekhart, Julian of Norwich, Catherine of Siena, Bonnaventure all developed language of intense spiritual union

with the Spirit.

Reformation (1500-1700 ce) Luther is influenced by German mysticism, but rejects the “ineffable nonsense” present in Eckhart’s

sentimental philosophy, rooting both experience, emotion and intellect regarding HS to Scripture.

Pentecostalism, Charles Finney’s “New Measures” (1800-Present) Neo-Montanism that develops the HS as one who constantly seeks estatic experiences through music,

untranslatable tongues, rapturous preaching and constant re-conversion. Predecessor to Decision theology, Altar Calls, and dominionism.

3rd Art. Holy Spirit: Historical Context

Page 9: 11.06.03 3rd article holy spirit person and work pt 1

The Spirit is a PersonSpirit has knowledge, personality and

seeks out truth and creativityThe Spirit proceeds from Father and the

SonThe Father and the Son send the

Comforter (John 14)The Spirit is co-equal and worthy of

Worship. We praise the Spirit of God (OT) as a

representative of the Father and Son to us. (Gen 1-2, Numbers 11:17)

If Christ is “for us” the Spirit is “to us” and all our praise and good works are “for Him”

3rd Art. Holy Spirit: Personhood and Diety

Page 10: 11.06.03 3rd article holy spirit person and work pt 1

In the Old Testament, the Spirit of God is present in;creating the world and sustaining life. history, using Israel to reveal God’s divine redemptive purpose for

humankind individual believers, anticipating the New Testament doctrine of the

Spirit who dwells in human hearts.In the New Testament the Spirit of God;

comes to the Virgin Mary empowering her to give birth to Jesus (Luke 1:35)

is present at Jesus’ baptism announcing that he is God’s son, (Luke 3:22 , described as “descending on Jesus like a dove”)

is given by the post-Resurrection Jesus to his disciples (John 20:22) and forms the church at Pentecost, extending Jesus’ earthly ministry

throughout the world (Acts 2:4 , described as descending on the believers as tongues of fire).

3rd Art. Holy Spirit: Biblical Context

Page 11: 11.06.03 3rd article holy spirit person and work pt 1

The Spirit creates and sustains faith (Subjective Justification) Worked in and sustained Christ’s ministry (Luke 4:18) Word and Sacrament Alone (John 3:5, Acts 1:5) I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who goes out from the Father, he will testify about me (John

3:5-6, 14:26, 15:26, 16:7, 12-13) The Spirit declares/comforts the elect with complete holiness in

Christ (Wider Sanctification) Spirit is the comforter and brings remembrance in times of

persecution (Romans 8:26-27, Numbers 11:17, Mark 13: 11, John 14: 26)

The Spirit enables development of God’s Word (Doctrine of Inspiration) All Scripture is God breathed (2 Tim. 3:16)

The Spirit enables development of unique and limited Gifts of the Spirit (Tongues, Healing, Signs and Visitations) “ All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in

other tongues as the Spirit enabled them” (Acts 2:4). The Spirit sustains continued and universal gifts of the Spirit

(teaching, preaching, ministry, service, prayer, vocation). Services and work for God through the Spirit (Gal. 5:16,22-23)

3rd Art. Holy Spirit: Inspiration and Works

Page 12: 11.06.03 3rd article holy spirit person and work pt 1

“The Holy Spirit is no skeptic, and it is not doubts and opinions that he has written on our hearts but assertions more sure and certain than life itself…Faith is a living, daring confidence in God’s grace, so sure and certain that the believer would stake his life on it a thousand times.  This knowledge and confidence in God’s grace makes men glad and bold and happy in dealing with God and with all creatures. And this is the work which the Holy Spirit performs in faith” (LW 33,35:370-71)

154. Who is the Holy Spirit?  The Holy Spirit is the third person in the Holy

Trinity, true God with the Father and the Son-therefore not merely the power or energy of God.

Matt. 28:19 Go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.

How do you know that the Holy Spirit is God?  Because the Scriptures clearly call Him God, teaching that

 A. the Holy Spirit has divine names; Acts 5:3-4 Peter said, "Ananias, how is it that Satan

has so filled your heart that you have lied to the Holy Spirit? ... You have not lied to men but to God."

1 Cor. 3:16 Don't you know that you yourselves are God's temple and that God's Spirit lives in you?

 B. the Holy Spirit possesses divine attributes (properties or characteristics);

Ps. 139:7-10 Where can I go from Your Spirit? Where can I flee from Your presence? If I go to the heavens, You are there; if I make my bed in the depths, You are there. If I rise on the wings of the dawn, if I settle on the far side of the sea, even there Your hand will guide me, Your right hand will hold me fast. (Omnipresence)

1 Cor. 2:10 The Spirit searches all things, even the

deep things of God. (Omniscience)  Heb. 9:14 Christ, who through the eternal Spirit

offered Himself unblemished to God, cleanse our consciences from acts that lead to death, so that we may serve the living God! (Eternity)

Note: See Matt. 28:19. (Holiness) Pray: O Holy Spirit of God, very God, who

descended upon Christ at the River Jordan, and upon the apostles in the upper chamber, we have sinned against heaven and before You; purify us again, we beg You, with Your divine fire, and have mercy upon us; for Christ’s sake. Amen. (Nerses of Clajensis, Armenia, 1102-1173)

O God the Holy Spirit, You are the Third Person in the ever Blessed and most adorable Trinity, distinct from the Father and the Son, and eternally proceeding from them both. Have mercy upon me a miserable sinner. Sanctify and renew my corrupt nature, and restore it to its primitive perfection and dignity. Fill me with Your blessed fruits: love, joy, peace, long-suffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, and temperance, that I living in Your Spirit, may walk in it, O Father, O Son, and O Holy Spirit, Three Persons but one God blessed forever. Amen. (Johann Gerhard, 1582-1637).

C. the Holy Spirit does divine works (which only God can do);

Gen. 1:2 Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters. (Creation)

Titus 3:5 He saved us through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit. (Sanctification)

 D. the Holy Spirit receives divine honor and glory.  1 Peter 4:14 The Spirit of glory and of God rests on you.

 156. What is the special work of the Holy Spirit?  The Holy Spirit sanctifies me (makes me holy) by bringing me to faith in Christ, so that I might have the blessings of redemption and lead a godly life (sanctification in the wide sense).  Note: The word sanctification is used in two ways:  1. The wide sense-the whole work of the Holy spirit by which He brings us to faith and also enables us to lead a godly life.  2. The narrow sense-that part of the Holy Spirit's work by which He directs and empowers the believer to lead a godly life.

1 Cor. 6:11 You were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.

Pray: Give me, O Lord, purity of lips, a clean and innocent heart, humility, fortitude, patience. Give me the Spirit of wisdom and understanding, the

Spirit of counsel and strength, the Spirit of knowledge and godliness, and of Your fear. Make me ever to seek Your face with all my heart, all my soul, all my mind; grant me to have a contrite and humble heart in Your presence. Most high, eternal, and ineffable Wisdom, drive away from me the darkness of blindness and ignorance; most high and eternal Light, illuminate me; most high and infinite Mercy, have mercy on me. Amen (Gallican Sacramentary, c. eighth century)

O Holy God, who is of purer eyes than to behold iniquity, you hate the tarnish which our inordinate lusts and impure thoughts place upon our soul. Let Your gracious and Holy Spirit keep me pure and unspotted from all uncleanness both of soul and body, that He may delight to dwell in that temple of my heart, where nothing that is unclean shall be permitted to enter. May I keep my body in holiness, after the purest example of the purest Jesus. May I be prepared in some measure, here, but much greater hereafter, to lead a spiritual life with those pure and unspotted souls. When free from the burden and temptations of the flesh, they shall spend an eternity of bliss in signing praises and hallelujahs to the undefiled and spotless Lamb, who sits upon the throne forever. Amen. (Johann Gerhard, 1582-1637)

M Works, Honor, Glory

Page 17: 11.06.03 3rd article holy spirit person and work pt 1

157. Why do you need the Holy Spirit to begin and sustain this faith in you? By nature I am spiritually blind, dead, and an enemy of God, as the Scriptures teach; therefore, "I cannot by my own reason or strength believe in Jesus Christ, my Lord, or come to Him."

1 Cor. 2:14 The man without the Spirit does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him, and he cannot understand them, because they are spiritually discerned.

Eph. 2:1 You were dead in your transgressions and sins.  Rom. 8:7 The sinful mind is hostile to God.  Eph. 2:8-9 By grace you have been saved, through

faith-and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God-not by works, so that no one can boast.

1 Cor. 12:3 No one can say, "Jesus is Lord," except by the Holy Spirit.

 158. What has the Holy Spirit done to bring you to faith?  The Holy Spirit "has called me by the Gospel," that is, He has invited and drawn me by the Gospel to partake of the spiritual blessings that are mine in Christ.

Rom. 1:16 1 am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God for the salvation of everyone who believes: first for the Jew, then for the Gentile.

2 Thess. 2:14 He called you to this through our gospel.  Rev. 22:17 The Spirit and the bride say, "Come!" And

let him who hears say, "Come!" Whoever is thirsty, let him come; and whoever wishes, let him take the free

gift of the water of life. Bible narratives: Invitation to the wedding banquet of

the king's son (Matt. 22:1-10). Invitation to the great banquet (Luke 14:16-17).

Pray: O Holy Spirit, I beg You enter into my heart and make of it a temple of the Living God. I cannot of my own reason and strength believe in Jesus Christ, my Lord, or come to Him. I cannot call Him Lord and God, unless You call me by the Gospel and enlighten me with Your gifts of faith and trust. I cannot remain with Jesus unless you sanctify and keep me in the true faith. And as You did call, gather, enlighten, and sanctify the whole Christian Church on earth, and keep it with Jesus Christ in the one true faith, keep me also a member of the Christian Church, forgiving to me and to all believers all our sins. And at the Last Day raise up me and all the dead, and give unto me and all believers in Christ eternal life Amen. (Paul Bente, 1886-1957)

Eternal God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, grant us Your Holy Spirit who writes the preached Word into our hearts. May we receive and believe it and be cheered and comforted by it in eternity. Glorify Your Word in our hearts and make it so bright and warm that we may find pleasure in it, through Your holy inspiration think what is right, and by Your power fulfill the Word, for the sake of Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord. Amen. (Luther)

159. How do the Scriptures describe this gracious work of the Spirit in you?  The Scriptures teach that by the Gospel the Holy Spirit "enlightened me with His gifts," that is, He gave me the saving knowledge of Jesus, my Savior, so that I trust, rejoice, and find comfort in Him.

1 Peter 2:9 You are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people belonging to God, that you may declare the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His wonderful light.

2 Cor. 4:6 God, who said, "Let light shine out of darkness," made His light shine in our hearts to give us the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Christ.

1 Peter 1:8 Even though you do not see Him now, you believe in Him and are filled with an inexpressible and glorious joy.

Rom. 15:13 The God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in Him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.

Bible narratives: The Samaritans were filled with great joy when Philip preached Christ to them (Acts 8:5-8). The jailer at Philippi and his whole family were filled with joy because they had come to believe (Acts 16:25-34).

 160. What is this work of the Holy Spirit called? It is called conversion (being turned) or regeneration (new birth).

Ps. 51:13 1 will teach transgressors Your ways, and sinners will turn back to You. (Conversion)

John 3:5-6 Jesus answered, "I tell you the truth, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless he is born of water and the Spirit. Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to spirit." (Regeneration)

Pray: By Your precious Holy Spirit You have also called me to Christ, my Savior, and have made me a partaker of His salvation in faith, so that I belong to that chosen generation which is Your holy nation and peculiar people in time and eternity. Graciously bestow upon me the gifts of Your Spirit, that before all the world I may show forth the praises of You who so graciously called me out of darkness into Your marvelous light. Amen. (Zorn 1846-1928).

Late have I loved You, O Eternal Truth and Goodness: late have I sought You, my Father! But You sought me, and when You shined forth upon me, then I knew You and learned to love You. I thank You, O my Light, that You shined upon me; that You taught my soul what You would be to me, and inclined Your face in pity unto me. You, Lord, have become my Hope, my Comfort, my Strength, my All! In You my soul rejoices. The darkness vanished from before my eyes, and I beheld You, the Sun of Righteousness. When I loved darkness, I knew You not, but wandered on from night to night. But You led me out of that blindess; You took me by the hand and called me to You, and now I can thank You, and Your mighty voce which ahs penetrated to my inmost heart. Amen. (Augustine of Hippo, 354-430).

161. Why do you say that the Holy Spirit has done this by the Gospel? The Gospel is the means by which the Holy Spirit offers us all the blessings of Christ and creates faith in us. Note: The written and spoken Word of the Gospel and the sacraments are the means of grace.

John 17:20 My prayer is not for them alone. I pray also for those who will believe in Me through their message.

Rom. 10:17 Faith comes from hearing the message, and the message is heard through the word of Christ.

1 Cor. 4:15 In Christ Jesus I became your father through the Gospel.

1 Peter 1:23 You have been born again, not of perishable seed, but of imperishable, through the living and enduring word of God.

Titus 3:5 He saved us through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit. (Baptism)

John 20:22-23 With that He breathed on them and said, "Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive anyone his sins, they are forgiven; if you do not forgive them, they are not forgiven." (Absolution)

Matt. 26:27-28 He took the cup, gave thanks and offered it to them, saying, "Drink from it, all of you. This is My blood of the covenant [testament], which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins."

(Lord's Supper) Pray: Father, You have called me and permitted

me to come into Your church. I confess and lament my unbelief and my thanklessness in not appreciating all these blessings. Grant me a true and firm faith that will continue until I shall arrive where all things last forever, which will be after the resurrection of the dead, in everlasting life. Amen. (Luther).
