From the Pastor

Peace be with you,

The Bible is not like a novel that flows from page to page. It is also not wri en like a history book that follows a meline strictly, filling in all the details. It is also not a peaceful read from cover to cover, as it contains much that will disturb you along with the saving message of God. In order to tell us how much God loves us; it must also describe all sorts of evil things. It is not composed of one style or type of wri ng or genre. You can certainly pick up a Catholic Bible and start at page one and work your way through figuring it all out yourself, but I do not recommend it.

So, first, not all Bibles are Catholic. Protestant Bibles contain fewer Old Testament books, and in Catholic Bibles, the transla on is approved by the Church. Look in the Bible for a Nihil obstat/Imprimatur on the page a er the tle page to know it is approved. The “Nihil Obstat” is the person who reviewed it, and the “Imprimatur” lists the bishop that put his name behind it as Catholic. Common Catholic transla ons include NABRE, RSV-CE, and NRSV-CE.

If you are a rookie Bible reader, you may not want to start in the Old Testament, but in the New Testament with the Gospels. Those who have never seen a Bible are o en amazed that the part about Jesus begins about 3/4 of the way into the book and takes up a small percentage of the Bible. I recommend you begin with the Gospel of Luke and then read the Acts of the Apostles if you are just star ng out. These two books were wri en by the same author, and they tell the story beginning with Our Lord’s birth. They then con nue to tell about Our Lord’s death, resurrec on, and ascension, and then on to the story of the early Church. In that way, you will get a broad arc of the whole New Testament before you read the other three Gospels: Ma hew, Mark, and John. Ma hew is always the first listed, but Mark’s is the earliest Gospel.

What I recommend you do as you start to read the Bible is not to have a meline. Pick it up and read it, and when something hits you as inspira onal or even interes ng, stop. These are the holy words of God, and God has something to say to you! Stop, and reflect any me you are inspired. The rest of the Bible can wait; there is no rush. This is not a homework assignment you must get through on a schedule.

If you are beginning with the Old Testament, clearly Genesis, Exodus, and Numbers from the Pentateuch (the first five books of the Torah) are a good place to start. I find it very helpful to use the internet lately when I read. I recently read the first books again, and whenever there was a men on of a place - I looked it up. For example, the desert that the chosen people wander in for 40 years seems like just a vast empty space with no direc on, but if you follow their path on a map, it makes more sense.

Warning, there are a lot of wars and death in the Bible along with the Good News of Jesus. The Bible doesn’t sugar coat anything. Remember, the en re Bible is God communica ng with His people. This reaches its pinnacle in Jesus, but there are at least 5000 years prior to Jesus where the people learned about God in a more abstract way. The people in the Bible are like so many of us who wander from God constantly and then go back. Like the Israelites who are constantly sinning, every me you and I sin, we wander from God. This is a story of God’s faithfulness to His people despite their constant unfaithfulness. Be prepared. Best to think of the Old Testament with the New as one long training by God in mercy and love. God takes His people from fearing His wrath to knowing His enormous love. As a parent teaches a child, there are consequences to disobedience - God teaches His people what it means to be faithful.

In this overly quick introduc on to reading the Bible, know that the layers and the depths to the Bible are endless. Amazingly, you can get something out of it just reading it unguided, but the Bible has so much to offer you, more than you can understand on your own. Reading Catholic Bible commentaries as you read along adds so much to your experience. Take your me. Dwell on what hits you. Bring what you read to your prayer. Hush - God wants to speak to you. Blessing upon you and your family, Bishop Mark

Prayer for Voca ons to the Priesthood Lord Jesus Christ, you share your saving work with all your brothers and sisters by their bap smal consecra on. But you call some to be ordained priests or deacons to make you visible in a special way, to proclaim your Good News, to celebrate your saving love in the

Eucharist and other sacraments, to lead and encourage your people in their pilgrimage to the Kingdom. May you awaken a generous response in the hearts of those whom you are calling to this work, for the building up of your Church. May parents teach their children the need and responsibility of this voca on. Amen
