20th August 2017

11 Pentecost

Welcome to St Petri today. It is good to gather in the name of Jesus to receive his Word for the journey of faith we share.

We gather here at St Petri at only one time today because we are working with other supporting congregations and the Redeemer Lutheran School community to participate in a large worship gathering of all 10 supporting congregations of the school. That Service begins at 10.00 am.

It is really good to do things with brothers and sisters in the gospel from this northern Barossa area. The thing we do together is sponsor a large, very well run Lutheran Primary School. Today is a day to show that support in a visible way by worshipping together on the School Campus.

We believe it is important for local congregations and the school community we sponsor to do all we can to encourage, support and work together in this mission enterprise.

For St Petri, Redeemer is a major part of our mission to share the love and hope of Jesus with everyone. We would not want to simply let the school run itself in a way that is totally separate to the church. Why would a church run a school if it were not for the sake of educating the young and

encouraging parents in the gospel of Jesus? That would be a poor use of valuable and finite resources. But if we sponsor the running of a school for the sake of educating, supporting and evangelising families in the gospel of Jesus, then that would be worth a lot. This is indeed our purpose at Redeemer. So, as a local church in Jesus’ mission,

we commit to supporting, encouraging, praying for and bearing witness to Jesus to children and their families through our school.

Even though the 10.30 community gives up their own usual gathering time to instead join the other nine supporting

congregations in worship at Redeemer today (10.00 am Service), we are glad to do this for the sake of showing strong support of the mission we sponsor through our school. It just so happens that our young people will be supporting the large gathering in music and song too!

God bless you and God bless our school!

Pastor Adrian

We pray ...

We pray for Neville Doecke who will be ordained as a Lutheran Pastor for the Hermannsburg Community (Special Ministry Pastor) on Sunday 27th August.

We remember in our prayers those who feel isolated and alone in life that they may find joy and acceptance through being part of a Christian community.

We pray for Redeemer Lutheran School and the combined worship service today as an opportunity for the whole Northern Barossa Lutheran Community to come together in God’s name and “Be Connected” to one another and to God.

We pray for our current H2H (confirmation) class: Ella Rothe, Amber Perry, Abby Materne, Sarah Zadow, Joshua Knights and Sharni Hoffmann who will affirm their faith on Sunday 15th October. We also pray for the new confirmation group who will be doing confirmation in a slightly different way - we ask God to be with all of our confirmation families as they grow in their faith lives.

Congratulations to Arthur & Janet Radke on the birth of their first great grandson - Oliver Schmidt. Arron & Tiarna are his parents. May God’s bless them.

We pray for God’s healing and peace for those of our church family who are ill, facing medical treatment or recovering from surgery - and those who care for them: Mary Hampel, Arthur Radke, Michael Wohlstadt, Pat Hausler, Stella Schulz, Valerie Parbs, Leanne Kitson, Eric Hailstone, Trevor Angel, Rosemary Angel, Leo Pech and Joan Leahy.

We pray for members of our church family: Brian & Marie MIBUS, Marion ELIX, Robert & Margaret REIMANN, Geoff & Avis STAPLETON, Viv & Joan FIEBIGER, Rita KERNICH and Doris PFITZNER.

New Member Directory - One more week to check your details please! This directory is very close to completion and we need to hear from you immediately if you have recently changed from landline to mobile phone. Most mobile phone numbers have been left out, so if your landline doesn’t work and yours needs to be in please let us know. There is a couple of pre-release copies of the directory in the office if you want to check if your entry is accurate.

Training Demonstration - Defibrillator (AED) Tuesday 19th September 4.30 pm in St Petri Hall We encourage all who are our volunteer first aiders, in our usher teams, staff, leaders of any groups and anyone interested to come along to a training demonstration on how to use our defibrillator. This demonstration will be put on by Red Cross. It does not take the place of first aid training but aimed at informing us how to use our particular model of defibrillator. Please let the office know if you can attend: 8562 1011 or email [email protected]

REACT – Our REACT youth group meets twice a month on a Friday night. Two weeks ago we enjoyed a MasterChef night, where our youth made cupcakes with the ingredients given, but no recipe. Second round was the ‘look and smell’ test, with individual ingredients in a container were to be named … such as cinnamon, curry powder and nutmeg. Third round was decorating the cupcakes creatively. Eventually we had the ‘MasterChef Winners’. We also had Tom Krahling and Dan Kitson sharing a devotional message on spiritual food. They spoke about the different things that we can do to keep growing as Christians, like reading God’s word. Then into small groups, we spent time talking through different questions about ways that we can get spiritual food at home. Great discussions. We look forward to our next gathering which is a Bonfire at Liersch’s property in Tanunda. REACT aims to support young people from year four and upwards to build friendship, learn and grow in God’s Word and have fun together. CONFIRMATION – Our Confirmation 2016-2017 group is in their last term of meeting together, prior to affirming their faith on Sunday 15th October at St Petri. Please pray for our six young people: Ella Rothe, Amber Perry, Abby Materne, Sarah Zadow, Joshua Knights and Sharni Hoffmann. They have been an amazing group of young people and it’s been such a privilege to join them on their faith journey. We say a huge thankyou to Lyn Albrecht and Phil Krahling for being mentors (small group guides) over the last 13 months and we give thanks for their commitment to teach and share God’s word with our students. Our new Confirmation 2017-2018 group and parents, have gathered twice in recent weeks for information sessions. We have a group of 9 St Petri, 1 Holy Trinity and 2 Light Pass students. At the information sessions we have shared the new shape that has been developed for our Confirmation ministry at St Petri. This journey includes meeting over a period of three terms. In Term Four this year and Term One next year, we meet with our Confirmation students on three occasions and on the third session in each term, we invite parents to join us. In Term Two 2018 we will meet every Monday in the term and after the July school holidays our young people will affirm their faith on their Confirmation Day. Throughout these three terms we are supporting our Confirmation families in using ‘Growing Faith at Home’ discussions – a devotional resource that is sent to our Confirmation families each week on a newly created St Petri Confirmation App. Parents are the greatest influencers on their children’s faith, so we are keen to support our families in their role as faith mentors. I will aim to keep you updated on our journey in the months to come. ST PETRI 150th CELEBRATON – We invite you to be a part of our helping team for the ‘Sunday School Picnic’ on November 12th. We will be running some old fashioned picnic games and we will also have other guessing games and stalls that you may like to be involved with. Please contact either Sharon Green or Sue Vogt and we’ll find a role that will suit you. Let’s bless our children and families on this fun day of celebration! Many thanks.
