"My life with The Theory of Constraints (I didn't use the term TOC because when Istarted it wasn't called TOC)

I would like to answer some of the questions that people have posed to me.

"When did I know I was hooked?" "Not one but two hooks?"

"Why was I still interested when it wasn't about work or earning a living?"

"Why were the Thinking Processes so important to me?"

"How did I use them?" "Who have I helped?""What was my biggest challenge?

"What about the one that got away?"

"The most rewarding, saving people's lives?"

"Did I use it in my personal life? Your story about using TOC for deciding about the

    bypass surgery is fascinating.

I personally would ask you - you have been with TOC a very big chunk ofyour life, it has been much more than just a job, it has been your lifestyle, in a way.

What in your understanding makes people who have been using TOC professionally, keep

on using it: thinking and assessing situations 'the TOC way' even when they do not need

    it for active work.

"My life with The Theory of ConstraintsDid I choose TOC or did it choose me?

In 1987 I was managing a team of Specialist Training Advisers; my boss called

me into his office and said I want you to take three of your team members

to join a National Team who will be trained to help Companies Improve their

Performance using Modern Manufacturing methods. We were taught a

process called Strategic Business Analysis. This equipped us to identify a

companys main constraint and show them the leverage effect that it could

    have on their profitability.

When did I know I was hooked.

Hook one came when we started to present our findings to management

teams of the clients we worked with. Repeatedly they told us. You are

telling us more about our company after 3 days than we have come to know

    in years!

The hardest part of the change was having an effective process to convince

them that large batches and high piles of WIP were the wrong things to value.

Numerous successes in assisting companies adopt low inventory systems

    that significantly improved performance.

For me the most important outcomes were those about retaining job orcreating new ones.

Hook two came when we started to develop the TOC Roadmap and later the

Thinking Processes with Oded, Developing the Management Skills Workshop

was a Revelation. Then after two assignments working with groups of peoplefrom the same organisation on their problem. I began to see the creative value

of the TOC Tools. I was WELL AND TRULY HOOKED.

    Practical Solutions to Complex Problems

    With this dilemma the

    main problem was

    getting to know what

    the alternatives were.

I did a lot of research

    on alternative

    therapies.

I chose to break B-D by

    seeking an incrementalimprovement

    approach.

    My INJECTION

I chose to adopt an incremental

improvement approach withmedication and lifestyle changes.

My GP told me sufficient to support

    my decision.

The emphasis then moved to the PRT.

Two years ago I met my nowretired GP on a model

    aircraft flying field.

I said to him, You wouldnt

    believe that I couldnt

readily walk up this field in

2006.He replied I think all the

    walking you did initially was

    an important factor in your

    remarkable recovery, youve

    done well.

In two months time it will

be 10 years since they told

    me, You could be dead

    within an hour?
