2011 Marketing: 11 Trends to Watch
It’s changed the way companies communicate.
Instead of communicating TO customers…
We now communicate WITH customers.
Engagement Happens.
It’s a Digital World
This is the Golden Age of Online Marketing. Four basic trends:
• Larger ad budgets overall
• Shifts in ad budgets from other media to the Internet
• More companies include the Internet as part of campaigns
• Increased prices for branding ads (display and rich media) and direct response vehicles (such as paid search)
Trend #1 – Online Marketing
Websites must be “mobile friendly”
• Half U.S. consumers will have a smartphone by the end of 2011
• 7 million Americans visit retail sites via mobile browsers each month
• 2.7 million used mobile shopping apps
• Over 20% of U.S. consumers visit social networking sites and blogs on their mobile phones

Location-based marketing has emerged as a strong category within the social media landscape.
• Check-in promotions
• Customer rewards
• Purchase recommendations
Trend #3 – Location Marketing
Social is no longer an optional add-on – it’s the new default.
Facebook milestone (November 2010): 25% of all webpage views in the U.S.
For some brands, social presences are now the primary platform for brand expression and interaction.
Owned-media channels are now supported by traditional homepages, rather than the other way around.

Social Influence Marketing - Consumers are in charge
• 78% of consumers trust peer recommendations • Facebooks friends ask friends • Consumers read reviews on Twitter • Blogs give consumers a voice and a way to research brands/companies

Consumers can access money and bank accounts via smart phones
Shoppers compare prices via smart phones (ie: Amazon Remembers App)
Make purchases on smartphones
Also in e-wallets: driver’s license, health card, loyalty card(s) and other ID documents. Certain sources are speculating that “3- wallets” will eventually replace physical wallets.

Quick Response Codes, two-dimensional code, that smartphones can can and hyperlinks to more information: • Websites • Phone numbers • Complex data & information • Coupons
• QR code uptake has increased 4589% from early 2010 to early 2011
• Ability to customize and brand
• 11 out of 50 Fortune companies are incorporating QR codes into their marketing strategy
