Biology Revision (Trilogy)
You will be examined on topics 1-4 in your Year 11 Mock. These topics will be examined in paper 1 of the real GCSE (with topics 5-7 in paper 2). Here’s a brief run-down of what’s included:
Topic 1 – Cell Biology Eukaryotes and prokaryotes Animal and plant cells Cell specialisation Cell differentiation Microscopy Diffusion Osmosis Required Practical: use a light microscope to observe, draw and label plant and animal cells. A magnification scale must be included. Required practical: investigate the effect of a range of concentrations of sugar solution on the mass of plant tissue. Active transport
Topic 2 – Organisation Principles of organisation Animal tissues, organs and organ systems Required practical: use qualitative reagents to test for a range of carbohydrates, lipids and proteins, including
Benedict’s test for sugars; iodine test for starch; and Biuret reagent for protein. Required practical: investigate the effect of pH on the rate of reaction of amylase enzyme. Plant tissues, organs and organ systems
Topic 3 – Infection and response Communicable (infectious) diseases – caused by bacteria, viruses, fungi and protists Human defence systems and vaccinations Antibiotics, painkillers and how new drugs are tested and trialled before use for toxicity, effectiveness
and dose
Topic 4 – Bioenergetics The word equation for photosynthesis is: carbon dioxide + water glucose + oxygen Light intensity, CO2, temperature and the amount of chlorophyll can affect the rate of photosynthesis and any one
can be the factor that limits photosynthesis Required practical activity: investigate the effect of light intensity on the rate of photosynthesis using an aquatic
organism such as pondweed The uses of glucose by plants (used in respiration, used to produce cellulose, starch, oils, amino acids) Aerobic and anaerobic respiration Response to exercise Metabolism
Revision tips:
Use the resources provided on www.Edmodo.com – the group code is 4hs8b6 for Trilogy. Powerpoints, practice papers and detailed checklists are available for each topic.

GCSE History
Your mock exams will be on Paper 2 Henry VIII and his ministers, 1509-1540 (55 minutes) Paper 3 Weimar and Nazi Germany, 1918-1939 (1 hour 20 minutes) You will not have a mock exam on Paper 1 (Medicine through Time and medicine in the trenches) in this exam period. You will have another practice mock on this topic in February.
What to revise Henry VIII and his ministers, 1509-1540
Henry VIII and Wolsey, 1509-1529
Henry VIII and Cromwell, 1529-40 The Reformation and its impact,
1529-1540
Weimar and Nazi Germany, 1918-1939
The Weimar Republic, 1918-29 Hitler’s rise to power, 1919-33 Nazi control and dictatorship,
1933-39 Life in Nazi Germany, 1933-39
For a more detailed breakdown, use the revision checklists and knowledge organisers given out in class and/or on Firefly.
How revise: self-quizzing and practice questions Self-quiz from a summary: a timeline, a knowledge organiser, a summary sheet, a mind-map, etc.
1. Cover up one side or section of the page. 2. Write it out from memory on a separate piece of paper or in a notebook. 3. Uncover the information and check your work. 4. Correct your work in a different coloured pen. 5. Now repeat. If you knew that part well, continue with the next section.
Self-quizzing with flashcards:
1. Look at one side of the flashcard and say or write down what is on the other side. 2. Check your answer. 3. Sort your cards as you go into the ones you know and the ones you don’t know. 4. Repeat the ‘don’t know’ pile more regularly.
You could also:
Cover up the information and create a mind-map of it from memory, or write it out in a different form. Write yourself quiz questions based on the information. Then put the information away and answer the
questions. Create your own online quizzes in Quizlet or another app; then do the quizzes. Write gap-fill versions of the information; then put it away and fill in the gaps.
“One of the best habits to instil in a learner is regular self-quizzing.”
Brown, Roediger and McDaniel Make It Stick
Once you think the information on a topic has stuck, plan or write a practice question on it. You can find practice questions in your textbooks. If you run out, ask your teacher for more or make up your own.

Revision for GCSE Japanese
Topics
The topic areas covered in the exams are Media, Travel, Culture, Sports, Leisure and Work.
Most topics you will use in your writing and speaking will fit into more than one of these
themes. Use these topics to revise your vocabulary and knowledge in each area.
Reading
The two key elements to being successful in your reading paper is vocabulary and Kanji.
Review your kanji with your flashcards and look at the list of Kanji words. You do not have to
be able to write the more difficult kanji words, but just recognising their meaning and being
able to read them will give you higher marks in your reading.
Speaking
Prepare and learn your presentation or picture-based discussion. Go over your question
words so you know straight away what kind of answer to give. Make sure you can initiate
some part of the conversation by having stock phrases for your topic which include some
complex grammar (use your writing checklist). Also remember to develop your ideas when
possible by giving an opinion or stating a preference.
Listening
Similar to the reading exam, the listening exam will test you on your knowledge of
vocabulary. You need to also pay attention to details of each sentence that you hear as in
some questions, simply knowing the words may not lead you to the right answer. Know the
negative forms of verbs and adjectives and their past tenses.
Writing
Practise writing commonly used verbs in Kanji as well as family members and other people
you are likely to write about. Practise in separate pieces writing about a person, a place and
an event or activity. Use a variety of adjectives and refer to your checklist to include as much
grammar structures as possible.
*Revision sessions will be offered Tuesday lunchtime.

GCSE MATHS 9-1 Topics List
“Revising Maths means Doing Maths” 9-1 Topic Revision:
Go through topics here on this list and highlight in green topics you’re confident with. Look up things on www.mathsgenie.co.uk/gcse.html to get a video explanation and exam practice
questions with full solutions.
How to prepare for your Maths exam Learning maths means doing maths Don’t just read notes, test yourself. Can you answer a question? Use flashcards to make quick, clear, colourful notes: read, turn over, test and check Practice: do past papers, exercises and tasks from workbooks Check the mode of your calculator and that you know how to use it.
In the exam... Make sure you are fully equipped with: pencil, black pens, sharpener, eraser, ruler, protractor, compasses and calculator. Read questions slowly and calmly – re-read where necessary to make sure you’ve understood before you start. Show all the stages in your working out. Don’t rush and make careless mistakes. Give the final answer exactly as it is asked in the question. Write down the units that you are using. Read questions carefully. Look out for terms like ‘give your answer to 3 significant figures’, ‘diagram not to
scale’, ‘estimate’. Spread out your work, make sure that the examiner can follow what you have written. Still show your working, even on the calculator paper. It is easy to lose marks by doing everything on the
calculator. Go through the exam paper and attempt the questions that you know first then go back through spending
more time thinking about ones you are not so sure about. Always check over carefully at the end. Useful Resources: You have a textbook you can use to help you prepare. You may also wish to purchase a Revision workbook – with solutions. Useful Websites: www.edexcel.com www.aqa.org.uk www.mymaths.co.uk www.mathsgenie.co.uk/gcse.html www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize Revision Sessions in school: Every Thursday and Friday lunchtime 12.45-1.10, there are Maths teachers and sixth-formers volunteering to help you with YOUR revision… You bring your issues / questions / work on MyMaths and we can help.

TIPS
1. Add on times for each session – make it manageable e.g. 30 minute or 45 minute sessions
2. Blank out where you have pre-planned activites and don’t forget to break up sessions with activities you enjoy.
3. Use your Revision planning sheet to fill in the boxes so that you manage your time to cover everything you need.
4. If you find you need to revisit a topic add on sessions for this afterwards.
5. Make sure you have everything you need for the revision session in advance.
6. When working stay focused otherwise it takes twice as long & do something active using different revision techniques.
