    The Secretary of Defense Employer

    Support Freedom Award is the highestrecognition given by the U.S.

    Government to employers for theirsupport of their employees who serve

    in the Guard and Reserve. The 2011nomination period saw over 4,000

    Guard and Reserve membersnominating employers for exceptional

    support.

    Only 145 companies have been

    presented the Freedom Award since it was first instituted 1996. Freedom Award recipients distinguish themselves

    going to extraordinary lengths to support their militaemployees. 2011s honorees ranged from a small church

    South Dakota, to two sheriffs departments, to majautomotive, technology, and banking corporations.

    November 2011Freedom Award - Process

    How to complete the nomination process: all applications are submitted online to ESGR

    Fill out the nomination form fully and accurately at:http://www.freedomaward.mil

    Once in the nomination form, your information will not be saveduntil you hit Submit. You may want to print out these instructions

    prior to entering the nomination form for reference. Do not hit theBackspace key or the Back button arrow in your web browserunless you are OK with losing the information you have alreadyentered.

    Ask your employer or HR representative for clarification if you areunsure of the best answer to the questions. You can even printout the nomination and discuss with your HR representative for

    assistance.

    For each question, please provide supporting information in thetext box below each question. This is your chance to enhance yournomination by providing thorough explanations of why youremployer deserves to be considered for this award (for example:elaborating on pay and benefit policies, service member and familysupport provided).

    Information to include in text boxes:

    What sets your employer apart from others?

    Do they make it easy for you to meet your military serviceobligations?

    Did they provide free childcare while you were deployed, or takecare of your lawn while you were gone?

    Do they check up on your spouse, family members, or perform home repair in a time of crisis in yourabsence?

    Elaborating on all of the ways in which your employer supports you, your family, other service membersand the military community will ensure the strongest nomination possible. For more information on what ittakes to be a Freedom Award recipient, please select an option from the Recipient dropdown menu tosee the contributions made by current and previous recipients.

    What happens next?..

    After your nomination is submitted, it will go to a review committee in yourstate. Once the nomination period closes in January, the state will selectsemifinalists to move on to the next round of competition. A review boardat HQ ESGR, a Department of Defense agency, considers allsemifinalists for selection to the next round (finalists). The group offinalists goes before a National Selection Board comprised of senior

    Department of Defense officials, representatives from each of the sevenReserve Components, employer associations and past recipients of theFreedom Award. This selection committee makes recommendations forup to 15 recipients to the Secretary of Defense for final approval.Recipients are finalized by early summer. The annual award ceremony isheld each September.

    Who is eligible to nominate?

    Onlya Guard or Reserveservice member can nominate

    their employer.

    If a service member does nothave online access to submit anomination, a family membercan nominate the servicemembers employer on theirbehalf.

    Who is eligible to receive theaward?

    Small, large (500+) and publicemployers can be nominated.The employer MUST be theservice members current

    employer.

    Nominations for friends, family,schools, stores, etc. that are notthe service members employerwill not be considered.

    The Douglas County Board of Commissers underscored the Countys leaders

    role as an employer of National Guard aReserve service men and women by plactheir individual signatures on a specienlarged version of ESGRs StatementSupport certificate.

    November 2011Patriot Award and Statement of Support recipients

    Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR) volunteers from Douglas County gathered at the Septem13, 2011 meeting of the Douglas County Board of Commissioners to bestow two important awards; 1) prestigious ESGR Patriot Awardto Sheriff David Weaver on behalf of the Douglas County Sheriffs office and 2) aESGR Statement of Supportwas presented for official signatures by members of the Board of Commissioners.

    The Douglas County Sheriffs Office anSheriff David Weaver were nominated fan ESGR Patriot Award by Deputy MaTracy, who also is a Staff Sergeant in tColorado National Guard.

    Deputy Tracys nomination cited sevecritical employment policies implementeby the Sheriffs Office and DouglCounty which make possible the lengtdeployments of himself and other deputiwho serve in the Armed Forces ReserComponent, including differential pa

    benefits coverage and direct support their families during deployments.

    SSgt Mark Tracy who submitted the nomination wrote, We have many Guard and Reserve members in agency and many have been on deployments over the past 5 years. The Douglas County Sheriff's Ofnot only supports the soldiers, sailors, airman and marines as they are called up, but also continu

    paying them a differential, and maintains all benefits for a period of 12 months. Sheriff Dave Wearemembers his employees that are called to fulfill their nation's duties, and treats us well. I was on anmonth deployment and the sheriff's office took very good care of my family, and made my transition bato work very smooth. I am grateful for an employer like DCSO and a boss like Dave Weaver. Thanks.

    The Uniformed Services Employment andReemployment Rights Act of 1994(USERRA, 38 U.S.C. 4301 4335) is afederal law intended to ensure thatpersons who serve or have served in theArmed Forces, Reserves, National Guardor other uniformed services: (1) are notdisadvantaged in their civilian careersbecause of their service; (2) are promptlyreemployed in their civilian jobs upon theirreturn from duty; and (3) are notdiscriminated against in employment basedon past, present, or future military service.The federal government is to be a model

    employer under USERRA (38 U.S.C. 4301).

    The focus of ESGR is four-

    fold:

    Promote an understanding ofGuard and Reserve service.

    Enlist support of employersin development of humanresource policies and practicesthat support and encourageemployee participation in Guardand Reserve programs.

    Disseminate information toimprove knowledge of, andvoluntary compliance with, theUniformed Services Employmentand Reemployment Rights Act(USERRA) among Reservecomponent leaders, members,and their employers.

    Sustain willingness ofemployers to support theiremployees called to militaryservice for the Global War onTerrorism over potentially longerperiods of time and greaterfrequency.

    The ESGR Statement ofSupport Program seeks toinform and educate employersabout their rights andresponsibilities towards theiremployees who serve in theNational Guard and Reserve,and to also recognize andreward those employers whogo over and above therequirements of the law.
