Mayor Jock Barker

*Australian Bureau of Statistics 2016 Census

The Town of Claremont is home to around 3,500 people aged 55 years and over*. That’s about 43 per cent of our total population, and a key reason the Town is dedicated to promoting opportunities for seniors to enjoy social participation, health, learning and inclusion.

Developing and supporting sustainable programs that meet the needs and expectations of members of our senior community comes into sharper focus during Seniors Week, as we highlight the range of opportunities and activities that support active ageing.

Social participation, inclusion and mobility are vital in maintaining quality life experiences, and the Town continues to support programs that offer a range of lifestyle options.

This is a great week to immerse yourself into the community, re-engage with old acquaintances and make new friends. There are also information sessions and activities that you may like to share with your family and/or carers.

Whatever the level of involvement, we welcome your participation and encourage you to join us in celebrating the collective wisdom and vibrancy of our Claremont community.

Please note: many of the programs listed in this booklet have limited spaces and require a formal registration through trybooking.com. If you experience difficulties with online booking systems, please call the Town of Claremont on 9285 4300 for assistance.

Program correct at time of going to print. Changes may occur and will be published on the Town’s website.

More than just a weekThe Town of Claremont is proud to celebrate seniors during Seniors Week, but our commitment to Claremont’s older residents doesn’t end there. We run and support a number of year-round programs and activities specifically for seniors, along with talks, workshops and other events that help the wider Claremont community integrate and socialise together.

Claremont Community Hub and Library Drop in to pick up the latest great read, bring a friend along to discover the art of Mahjong, brush up on your knitting skills, or learn the ins and outs of modern technology in our broadband workshop for seniors. For more details on our weekly classes, visit claremont.wa.gov.au or call the Claremont Community Hub and Library on 9285 4300.

Freshwater Bay Museum The historic Freshwater Bay School is home to Freshwater Bay Museum. Originally constructed in 1862, the building functioned as the first school between Perth and Fremantle, and has also been a place of religious worship, a boarding house for young men, a police station and police quarters. The Town of Claremont opened the building as the Claremont Museum in 1975 after it had been relinquished by WA Police, making it the first metropolitan council-owned museum.

The museum collects, preserves, interprets and exhibits the cultural heritage of Claremont and the area of Freshwater Bay.

Freshwater Bay Museum is currently closed while we undergo some exciting renovations. Please visit freshwaterbaymuseum.com.au for information on events that will continue to be held throughout these renovations.

SHINE Community Services This service is provided by paid support workers and volunteers to assist seniors and their carers in the areas of Home and Community Care support services, transport services, small maintenance requests, shopping and home visits. SHINE also host some great social activities including afternoon teas, guest speakers, lunches and day outings. For more details visit shinecs.com.au or call SHINE on 9383 2663.

Meals on Wheels The Town of Claremont supports the local Meals on Wheels service, both financially and through the provision of the building from which meals are distributed.

Meals on Wheels provides meals five days a week to Claremont residents by a team of voluntary drivers. If you are interested in accessing Meals on Wheels, please contact [email protected] or 9285 4300.

Claremont Cruisers The Claremont Cruisers walking group meets weekly. Check the Town of Claremont’s website for schedules and locations.

Volunteering Did you know that volunteering actually adds years to your life? A major review of more than 50 studies showed that people who volunteer are happier, healthier, sleep better and live longer.

Why not volunteer with the Town of Claremont? There are a variety of opportunities to volunteer with Claremont Community Hub and Library, Friends of Lake Claremont, Freshwater Bay Museum (even while it’s closed), and at our annual program of community events. If you are interested in finding out more, please email [email protected] or visit the library any Friday between 10am and 1pm to ask your questions in person.
