THE ONTROL DATA 7600Betsey Chen

'The Qntrol Data crparation (Oc) 7600

(This is the sixth and last in a series of articles on the SCD Systems Depart-ment.)

The 7600 computer is used by some data processors and a large number of indi-viduals to manage their program libraries. It is a high-performance computerthat can be useful for applications involving large amounts of I/O withoutrequiring extensive memory allocation. It is also, at this time, still theroute that remote users follow to enter the NCAR computing system from theirparticular sites to run jobs on the CRAY-1 computer. Judging from statistics, the 7600 disks provide a buffer area for CRAY-1 users' disk information.

Use of the 7600 has been dropping since its small memory size makes it incon-venient to users who have been using the CRAY-1 and because it is commonknowledge that SCD management would like to replace the machine as soon aspossible.

Support for the 7600 is provided by Betsey Chen, a Systems Department program-mer, with the assistance of various Systems Department personnel who have spe-cialized in specific modules of the system in the past.

The last major improvement to the 7600 operating system was made nearly oneyear ago when FASTPATH I/O for short records was activated. This program hasconsiderably improved the overall I/O performance of the 7600.

The 7600 network software has been improved to provide better behavior whentransmission errors occur. The software now will continue to process multipleDISPOSE statements when one DISPOSE statement fails and makes a better effortto send appropriate diagnostics to the user.

FbrM for 1 stingcouting Services

The two forms, "REQUEST FOR COMPUTING SERVICES" and "REQUEST FOR EXTENSION OFCOMPUTING SERVICES", have been recently updated. For your convenience, copiesare attached at the end of this issue of The Record. Please discard all out-dated forms you may have on hand.

Proposals are subject to peer review of science and numerics. Requests forthe equivalent of five hours or less on the CRAY-1 can be reviewed at anytime. Processing is normally completed in 4 to 6 weeks. Larger requests arealso reviewed at twice yearly meetings of the SCD Advisory Panel. Projectsnot sponsored by the National Science Foundation are subject to charges. Forinformation about policies, deadlines, and charging rates, contact John Adams(ext. 573) or Cicely Ridley (ext. 638).

range, and the resulting execution error produces the diagnostic DATASET NOTFOUND. Contact the Consulting Office (ext. 579) if you encounter this error.

At the same time these modifications were made, EZMAP on CRAYLIB was remediedto avoid redundant MAPDAT accesses. Thanks are due to Rick Wolski for provid-ing the appropriate set of modifications.

$1KIXB Version f 00( 1.10

The CRAY-1 library $NCARLB has been compiled under the 1.10 version of CET andis now available on the CRAY-1 by preceding the CFT control statement withcontrol statement:

CFT110.

Although tests indicate that the 1.10 version of $NCARLB performs correctlyand is slightly faster than the default version, it will be kept at an experi-mental level awhile. Usage is encouraged to uncover errors or inconsisten-cies.

Please report any problems to Richard Valent (ext. 610).

aumtines I and Pa EB Canged

On September 7, 1982, the routines PACKA and PACKB (the FORTRAN source in thefile FPACKER, on CRAYLIB, and the binary on $NCARLB), will be modified to fixan error which could cause them to attempt to divide by zero. Users who aremodifying the source will have to change their mod decks.

DIxentativn Update

The subject of this column is the vast and confusing array of documents andupdates which are available to you; and its purpose is to announce everythingin one place.

Included at various times will be documents issued by SCD, by NCAR but outsideSCD, by IBM and by Cray Research, Inc. Directions for obtaining the documentsare given.

If you faithfully read this column every month, your library should be as com-plete and up-to-date as you wish it to be. In addition, if you wish toannounce a pertinent document, please contact Linda Besen (ext. 588).

SCD Documents

SCD Documents are available from Sal Farfan, Room 100, ext. 346.

Two of the five sections of the Users Guide to the NCAR Computing Division(the blue manuals) have been revised. The first section, Overview of NCAR's

Computing Environment, has been updated to include the Resource AccountingGroup (RAG). RAG is now responsible for many visitor-related functions whichwere previously handled by the Administration Office. The list of recommendeddocuments has been expanded and updated and put into Chapter 4; you may wishto look it over even if you're not new to SCD.

The second section is revised and now entitled The IBM 4341: Gateway to NCAR'sComputers. (The old title was Interactive Computing on the IBM 4341.) Itcontains the same information, but has been extensively rewritten to be moreuseful and accurate.

Two more sections are currently being revised and are due out in September andOctober. These are the sections on the CRAY-1 and on the NCAR Local Network.

Also revised this month is the document entitled "7600 Control Statements".It replaces an older document by the same name.

Please check your copy of the IBM 4341 Tutorials; the date should be May 26,1982 to be current.

Za - The Next T Purge from the IM-4

The next regular quarterly purge of VSNs from the TMS-4 will occur on October2, 1982 and will affect VSNs not accessed since July 10, 1982, the date of theprevious purge.

Purges affecting VSNs not accessed during a calendar quarter take place regu-larly at the beginning of the following calendar quarter.

Users are responsible for accessing wanted VSNs during the current quarter, toprevent them from being purged. As usual, VSNs on Dedicated reels and PLIB(PO4xxx or P05xxx) VSNs will not be purged.

For information on:

1. How to save needed VSNs;

2. How to use the XLIB utility program, TBMVSN, to get detailed informationabout your VSNs, including which ones will be purged if not accessed;

3. How to initiate longterm storage for archival VSNs;

Consult pages 16-18 of the February 1, 1982 issue of The Record (Volume 3, No.2).

For information on how to purge your own unneeded VSNs, please refer to pages11-12 of the July 1, 1982 issue of The Record (Volume 3, No. 7).

Sumary of Daily Jlletin Items

Below is a summary of saome items which have appeared in the Daily Bulletin(the NEWS file for remote entry users). These items concerned systemschanges, operations procedures, and other news of general interest. They maystill be of interest to users and are listed below by topic and date.

CRAY-1:

August 10, 1982An error has been found in the CRAY-1 utility program DSDIMP, version 1.10,bug fix level 3. Version 1.10, bug fix level 1, which works correctly, willbe used as the default until the problem is fixed.

7600:

August 3, 1982

The new System Tape this week (D96) has a fix to transmit correct file sizesto other nodes on the network.

-8-September 1, 1982

Volume 3, Number 9

OPERATIONS:

July 15, 1982Please provide tapelists to the operators, by phone, terminal, or over thecounter, EACH time you submit a job calling for several 1/2" tape mounts.Because of space restrictions, tapes gathered for a job often remain on thefloor for no more than 24 hours. If a job fails and needs rerunning, a newtapelist for the required tapes is needed. This saves the operators' time andenergy, and results in better turnaround for all.

I suggest that a more complete message than "BAD STATUS RETURNEDFROM NETWORK" be supplied on the 7600. The problem with failureto process subsequent *DISPOSE cards after an error on one shouldbe fixed immediately.

(See below)

Now that the DICOMED is online, I have recently begun sendingplot files to it. When sending files from the CRAY-1 with a NET-DISP card, I receive a minimal message indicating whether theDICOMED successfully received the plot files or not. When send-ing files from the 7600 to the DICOMED using a *DISPOSE card, Ireceive no information at all concerning whether the files wereshipped successfully. The alternative of asking the operators(over and over) whether this job and that job were received bythe DICOMED is clearly unworkable. I would urge the appropriateSystems person to implement some means to inform the user thathis file was shipped over at the least. It would be even betterif there could be an indication of the number of frames sent (asthere is for the dd80) for all jobs sent to the DICOMED, whetherfrom the CRAY-1 or the 7600. I might add that this lack of amessage on the 7600 is particularly bad for users at remote ter-minals.

(See below)

I was informed that the *DISPOSE card does generate a crypticmessage. This is sometimes true. Sometimes the operators willtear the paper at the "$" field and lose the message whichappears afterward. Sometimes there is no message. Most oftenthere is the message "NETWORK RETURNED BAD STATUS". Usually thisindicates that the job worked. Unfortunately, the message somane-times means it didn't work. Other common messages of success are"IMPROPER CONTROL CARD" or "END OF FILE FOUND IN CONTROL CARD

SCAN"; these result from the curious tendency for completion of a*DISPOSE card to send the program to the first card after the*RUN and interpret the data as control cards. (This even returnsthe error message when the next card after the *RUN is a *END) .I do not find this situation particularly satisfactory.

The 7600 network has been changed to print an indication of suc-cess or failure for each *DISPOSE statement which indicates bothVSN and unit number. These messages will appear before the $field if the printing is done on the 7600 printer. If theprinter output is disposed to a remote node, the $ field ter-minated will not be shipped and the messages will appear at theend of the output. All *DISPOSE cards will be processed even inthe event of an error on one of the previous *DISPOSE cards.(Gil Green)

Some way of disposing temporary disk files from virtual machineson the IBM 4341 over the local network should be developed. Ijust examined a 3M byte print file on my virtual machine and wantto dispose it to the DICOMED, but cannot do so since I do nothave enough permanent disk space available. I can also imagine Iwill want to be doing the same thing with metacode files.

The network on the 4341 has been changed to allow temporary diskfiles to be shipped. (Gil Green)

When the network disposes files to a remote computer with aDC=ST, the file appears in the file system of the remote computerwith an EOF appended to the file. I suggest that this appendagebe removed, as it is not part of the original file.

On systems that do not support multiple files, it is necessary toprovide some means of determining where file marks had been onthe remote computer. The 7600 and the CRAY-1 support multiplefile marks and do not need the \EOF marks in their file systems. The 4341 code has been changed to drop the file marks as adefault. Users who wish to know where file marks were shouldspecify EOFS=YES in the text field of their dispose request. (GilGreen)

Attach a brief, self-contained proposal describing your project. Since routine processing includes peer review of both science and numerics, it is important togive sufficient information for realistic evaluation. The relationship of your project to the atmospheric sciences should be made clear, in cases where this isnot obvious. A breakdown of your proposed computer usage should also be included. If reference to papers or other supplementary material is necessary, please provide three copies for use by reviewers. You are urged to be concise since a large volume of supporting material places an unfair burden on reviewers
