PASTOR’S MESSAGE “When they heard the sound of the Lord God moving about in the garden at the breezy time of the day, the man and his wife hid themselves from the Lord God

among the trees of the garden. The Lord God then called to the man and asked him, “Where are you?”

He answered, “I heard you in the garden; but I was afraid, because I was naked, so I hid myself.”

Genesis 3:8 -10 After celebrating Easter and the great Solemnities of the Most Holy Trinity and Corpus Christi, we find ourselves in the 10th week of Ordinary Time with a passage from the book of Genesis as our first reading. The themes present in this chapter of Genesis haunt our human existence: • God who has blessed us with the bounty of the earth also blesses us with freedom to choose right from wrong • Evil and temptation exist in the world • Human beings are weak and prone to give in to temptation • When we sin, our guilt makes us want to hide from God • In God’s justice we receive punishment • In God’s mercy we receive pardon and a second chance • The cycle of freedom, fall from grace, perdition, judgment and mercy repeat themselves We don’t have to look far to see evil in our world. Drug addiction ruins the lives of individuals and families and causes violence in the production and transport of illegal contraband. How many lives have been lost to opioid addictions and violence that surrounds the purchase of drugs? Temptations to steal abound when we hear cases of greed, embez-zlement and identity theft that are so widespread. Temptations of the flesh have damaged many marriages and rela-tionships. And the list goes on. God, however, gives us spiritual gifts to combat the evils of the world. Hope is not lost. Like St. Paul, we are called to fight the good fight of righteousness. Ephesians 6:13-17 also admonishes us: “Therefore, put on the armor of God, that you may be able to resist on the evil day and, having done everything, to hold your ground. So stand fast with your loins girded in truth, clothed with righteousness as a breastplate, and your feet shod in readiness for the gospel of peace. In all circumstances, hold faith as a shield, to quench all the flaming arrows of the evil one. And take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.” - Fr. Dennis

PILGRIM CENTER OF HOPE

LIFE AFTER LOSS Grief can be a very powerful and overwhelming experience that changes your life. Under-standing and compassion from others can lead to healing and rediscovering meaning in a per-son’s life again. “Life After Loss” is a group support program that was designed to help bereaved people better understand the process of grieving and how to live through it in a way that transforms them. It al-so provides a place for people to share their experience and offer support to one another. St. Matthew will be offering a Life After Loss group beginning Thursday, July 12, from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. It will meet at this time for six Thursdays through August 16. The group will be facilitat-ed by Heather Walchar and Bruce A. Orey. The program will be a combination of teaching, discussion, and learning activities. The ses-sions are open to those who have experienced the death of a loved one, and there is no charge for the program. If you would like to know more, you can call Bruce A. Orey at 210-478-5036 to reserve your place.

AMERICAN FLAG This flag, which we honor and under which we serve, is the emblem of our unity, our power, our thought and purpose as a nation.

ST. MATTHEW PARISH REACHING A MILESTONE!

Many of you know that this year, 2018, marks the 300th anniversary of the City of San Antonio. Did you know that this November our parish will realize its’ 50th year of existence! Also, our school was founded in 1993 and is celebrating its’ 25th anniversary this year as well. What a blessing our founding families and first pastors have given us as they laid the foundation for what has become the second largest parish in the Archdiocese of San Antonio, with over 5,000 registered families, and arguably the parish with the most ministries and organizations and certainly the largest Catholic Elementary and Middle School! We have much to be proud of. In upcoming bulletins we will be announcing future events that will be offered as we celebrate our parish’s 50th anniversary.

Sexual Revolution: 50 Years Since Humanae Vitae Two screenings of Sexual Revolution: 50 Years Since Humanae Vitae, a groundbreaking documentary about Pope Paul VI’s prophetic masterpiece Humanae Vitae, will be held in San Antonio this month. The FREE screenings are: • Friday, June 22, 7:00 pm at Holy Trinity Catholic Church • Saturday, June 23, 2:00 pm at Our Lady of Atonement Catholic Church. Read more at www.sexualrevolutionmovie.com.
