PASTOR’S MESSAGE “Those who say, ‘I know him,’

but do not keep his commandments are liars, and the truth is not in them.

But whoever keeps his word, the love of God is truly perfected in him.” I John 2:4-5

Many have heard the phrase “Walk the Talk” which implies our actions need to match up with our be-liefs and life of faith. The passage above from this Sunday’s Second Reading from I John 2:1-5a fur-ther emphasizes our need to be authentic by not just speaking God’s commandments but living them out. Therein lies the problem. Sin is insidious and wrecks our best intended plans to walk in God’s truth. Easter reminds us that Jesus precisely came to lib-erate us from the trappings of sin. The word “sin” occurs in the First Reading from Acts 3:13-15, 17-19, the Second Reading and the Gospel of Luke 24:35-48. In Acts in verse 15 we hear: “Repent, therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be wiped away.” The Gospel of Luke chapter 24 vers-es 46 and 47 state: “Thus it is written that the Christ would suffer and rise from the

dead on the third day and that repentance, for the forgiveness of sins, would be preached in his name to all the nations, beginning from Jerusalem.” Je-sus died to offer forgiveness of sins for the times we don’t “walk the talk”, fail to follow God’s com-mandments, or, as in another definition of sin, when we “miss the mark” – the high ethical stand-ard of conduct God expects all of us to abide by. The First Letter of John reveals that our greatest weapon against sin is love. The more we love God, the more it will pain us to turn against his ways. This had to have been the key regarding the sanctity of saints: they were as tempted by evil as we are, but their love for God was so great that they couldn’t bear offending him even with the slightest of sins. May we be people of integrity and truth, always seeking to follow Jesus who is the way, truth and life. - - Fr. Dennis

Construction Update Last week the new sidewalk linking the school and gym was poured. The coming week we will continue to see the last of the upper roof steel being completed. Significant progress should be seen with the exterior masonry walls. The fire lane at the school will remain closed until April 20 to allow for removal of the casting slabs, which should begin on Monday, April 16. See the erection of steel with both time lapse and drone views at: https://spaces.hightail.com/space/VrhVBgbwuB. Click on “manual sort order” and change to “sort by date added” to bring the latest videos to the upper left of the pre-views.

SPANISH BAPTISMAL CLASSES Deacon Rafael Lara will be conducting Baptismal Classes in Spanish in the Bride’s Room on the following dates: April 10th and April 17th at 7 p.m. in the Bride’s Room of the Church. Contact him at 210-601-0800 if interested in attending.

April 28 & 28 we will take up the second col-lection Catholic Home Missions Appeal. Right

now, over 40 percent of dioceses in the United States are considered home mission territory because they are unable to fund the essential pastoral work needed in their communities. Your support of this appeal helps ease the struggle of these dioceses. Please prayerfully consider how you can support this appeal. More information can be found at www.usccb.org/home-missions.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION There are many ways in which religious communities are organized. Some have a central authori-ty in a congregation, and others have a "rule" that is shared by all the members, but are a kind of federation of independent houses. Sometimes, congregations with distinct histories and ministries decide to merge. Several years ago, one of the largest mergers on record took place. Seven inde-pendent congregations of Dominican women religious, most in the Midwest, are now one new congregation enfolding more than seven hundred members spanning thirty-six states. The oldest of the founding groups, the so-called "Kentucky Dominicans," began as a frontier community in 1822. Other communities have European roots. To get to this historic moment, the sisters spent many years in conversation, and approved the new structure by a two-thirds majority vote. This was then ratified by the Holy See. The merger allows the sisters to pool their resources in order to be more effective in ministry. They are living the Paschal Mystery, experiencing Christ's dying and rising in an inspiring way. --Rev. James Field, Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co.

ST. MATTHEW PARISH REACHING A MILESTONE!

Many of you know that this year, 2018, marks the 300th anniversary of the City of San Antonio. Did you know that this November our parish will realize its’ 50th year of existence! Also, our school was founded in 1993 and is celebrating its’ 25th anniversary this year as well. What a blessing our founding families and first pastors have given us as they laid the foundation for what has become the second largest parish in the Archdiocese of San Antonio, with over 5,000 regis-tered families, and arguably the parish with the most ministries and organizations and certainly the largest Catholic Elementary and Middle School! We have much to be proud of. In upcoming bulletins we will be announcing future events that will be offered as we celebrate our parish’s 50th anniversary.

CONTRIBUTION STATEMENTS FOR THE YEAR 2017

were mailed to all parishioners who contributed $500.00 or more. If you did not receive a copy and need a statement for tax purposes, please contact the Administration Office at 210-478-5000.

PERPETUAL ADORATION UPDATE

He Is Risen! During Holy Week we recall the events of the Passion of Jesus. We re-live the agony of Ho-ly Thursday and the horrific pain and suffering of Good Friday. At Easter we celebrate the most joyful event of history. The tomb is opened and the brilliance of the Eternal Light, the resurrected body of Jesus Christ, illumines a darkened world. At every mass we experience Easter when we are presented the Holy Eucharist at communion. We hear the words “The body of Christ”, then see and receive the host, and our bodies, our minds, our hearts and our souls are enlightened by the Real Presence of the Eternal Son of God. That moment just before actually receiving communion should be for us a mo-ment of worship and adoration. But that moment is all too brief. In the Blessed Sacrament chapel we have the chance to do what we cannot do in a communion line – spend time in the presence of the Blessed Lord Jesus. It is as if time has stopped at that moment of being presented the Holy Eucharist and we can wor-ship and adore Him as he truly deserves. The chapel is always open because many faithful people make the commitment to be there for a weekly hour of prayer and adoration. Please join us in spending time with Our Risen Lord Jesus. Sign up today! Call Mike at 210-579-0716 (voice only)

SAVE THE DATE Our parish will be celebrating our 50th

Anniversary with a special Mass. We are blessed to have Archbishop Gustavo Garcia-Siller, M.Sp.S., preside at our Anniversary

Mass on Sunday, November the 18th at 2 p.m. in the afternoon. After the Mass we will have a

celebration with more details to come. Please save the date.

PLEASE USE YOUR PRE-PRINTED ENVELOPES Registered members of the parish should be receiving a packet of contribution envelopes every month from St. Matthew. These envelopes have vital information printed on them to assist the staff in accurately posting and subsequently reporting your contributions at the end of the year. We are requesting that all parishioners make use of these convenient envelopes to facilitate our work here in the office. If on occasion, you do forget your envelope, please do one of the following: (1) Use the red and white envelope in the pew, being sure to write out your full name and address on the front of the envelope. Put your check or cash inside and drop it into the collection basket; or (2) You may also put a “loose check” (no envelope) in the basket provided that your checks have your name and address on them. St. Matthew cannot give credit or verification of donations made with “loose cash,” that is, cash which is not in a clearly marked envelope. Full name and address are important because of the large numbers of parishioners with similar names. We at St. Matthew are grateful for the generosity of our members. In addition, we would like to be of assistance to you when tax season comes around by providing you with an accurate accounting of your sacrificial giving. In order to accomplish this, we are in great need of your help in the ways outlined above. May God bless you for your continued support of our parish. Thank you very much.
