Most of the Scripture readings we read and hear at Mass are filled with hope. They proclaim God’s mighty deeds throughout human history; and how God’s sav-ing love, extended to us through Jesus Christ, has re-deemed us from sin and opened for us the pathway to eternal life. Today’s first reading is a notable exception. It is taken from the Book of Ecclesiastes, and is a collec-tion of wise Hebrew sayings about the meaning and value of human life. This book’s basic message is that on the surface, life can seem pointless, and all our ef-forts to be virtuous can seem to be in vain; especially if one subscribed to the common belief at the time that death led everyone to Sheol, a sort of Limbo, with nei-ther eternal punishment nor reward. Though decidedly pessimistic, the Book of Ecclesiastes is written by a per-son of faith who argues persuasively that nothing in earthly life has lasting value…not money, not power, not pleasures, and not possessions. Ecclesiastes echoes a familiar adage, namely, that we can’t take any of the above with us when we die. The two New Testament readings this weekend underscore this point, but affirm that because of our faith in Christ life does have mean-ing and value. St. Paul in his letter to the Colossians urges Christians to “think of what is above, not of what is on earth” and “put to death, then, the parts of you that are earthly: immorality, impurity, passion, evil de-sire, and the greed that is idolatry.” The gospel passage presents Jesus’ parable about a rich man whose land produces a bountiful harvest. Rather than sharing this plentiful haul of grain and other fruits of his farm with the less fortunate, the rich man decides to build larger barns to store up the harvest for his own future use. God’s response to this greedy action is a harsh rebuke: “This night your life will be demanded of you…thus will it be for all who store up treasure for themselves but are not rich in what matters to God.” Collectively, these biblical lessons remind us that we need to stake our lives ultimately on the things of heaven, not the things of earth. Our secular culture prizes worldly af-fluence and influence, the acquisition of goods and the accumulation of possessions. By way of contrast, the Church holds in the highest esteem our Catholic faith and those who strive for Christian virtue. As disciples of Christ, we need to heed the imperative St. Paul issues: “seek what is above, where Christ is seated at the right hand of God”!

the Assumption Parish on Sunday, August 14 in the OLA Church Hall following the 11AM Mass. Parish-ioners of St. Maria Goretti Parish will host this social event. The actual Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary falls on Monday August 15, but it is not a Holy Day of Obligation this year. Mass will be offered that day at the usual location (OLA) and time (9AM).
I am happy to announce the appointment of Kate McGrath to the position of Collaborative Faith For-mation Administrative Assistant. Her main role is to support the work of our Faith Formation Coordinators (Alexis McDuffee, Bethany Kilroy and Steve Gannon) and the Religious Education programs we offer in both parishes. Join me in welcoming Kate to our excellent Faith Formation team! Beginning in August, Marie Lag-man, our new Collaborative Digital Ministry Coordina-tor, will be responsible for the weekly bulletin. With her arrival, we have decided to publish one Lynnfield Catholic Collaborative bulletin each week, with pic-tures, information and stories about both parishes and our parochial school in its pages. The work of publish-ing two separate bulletins (with two different printing companies) that cover a lot of overlapping news each week has become onerous and so we have decided to consolidate our bulletins into one Collaborative bulletin produced by Boston Pilot Publications. We hope you like the new layout and ask that from now on, you send your bulletin material to Marie in a timely manner. Many thanks to Janine Sano, our Administrative Assis-tant, for her faithful and capable work on the two bul-letins for the last few years! Janine now can focus on the many other responsibilities of her position, includ-ing answering the door and phone, keeping the Collab-orative Calendar, responding to requests such as sched-uling Mass intentions and filling out Mass cards, and providing much needed Administrative support to our priests and other Team members. Blessings to all of you in the week ahead!

“...rest, eat, drink, be merry!” Oh how inviting this sounds! But Paul is wise and kind to caution us (as he cautioned the Colossians) to “Seek what is above...Put to death, then, the parts of you that are earthly”. We are called to be in the world, but not of the world. In fact, our task is to sanctify the world around us. Difficult? Sure. Bur not impossible - remember, with God all things are possible. This week, make a concerted effort to ‘seek what is above’ by adding just five minutes to your daily prayer time. And if daily prayer isn’t yet a habit, start with just five minutes of conversation with God who is waiting to hear from you.
JUSTICE FOR JESUSJUSTICE FOR JESUSJUSTICE FOR JESUSJUSTICE FOR JESUS A reflection by Christine Barraford
For me, giving of myself to the first few Corporal Works of Mercy was as easy as adding more items to my weekly shopping list. Feed the hungry, check; give drink to the thirsty, check; shelter the homeless, check. The others required a little more of me emotionally: visit the sick; reach beyond prison bars that separate me and my neighbor; bury the dead--at my age a sad work given all too frequently. “For”giving of myself to the Spiritual Works of Mercy doesn’t come as easy. Forgive an injury. Pause. I decided to “start small.” That petty grudge I’ve been holding….I can let go of that, and maybe that other petty grudge ….I can do that. And for that deep wound that stirred at the sound of the words “forgive an injury,” I’m working on that. I pray with the grace of God that in the act of for-giveness, I will receive the healing power of Divine Mercy.

Our collaborative project filling baby bottles with change to fund diaper “changes” resulted in $974 available to purchase diapers. We will report on dia-per purchases in an upcoming bulletin, so we can share the tangible result of our efforts. Special thanks to Ken Kasprzak, KOC, and Christine Barraford who will make diaper purchases with “care coupons” thereby making our monies go even further. With deep gratitude for all who participated - with change, coupons, prayers - without everyone doing something, none of this would be possible. We usually pray as we make the pray-er shawls, then they are blessed by a priest, and Mimi, a parishioner, says the rosary over them, finally our bible study group lays hands on them. They
are saturated in prayer! Then they go off to the Cancer Center in Danvers, Sa-lem Hospital, Union Hospital, and some are kept at the Collaborative Business Office for any parishioner who needs one for themselves or friends and family. In the past we have sent our prayers shawls to retirement homes for priests and nuns, Melrose Wakefield Hospi-tal, UMass Hospital in Amherst, and a prayer group in Maine. We have also done scarves for Special Olympics and for OLA School when they took a trip to Washing-ton, DC where they marched for unborn babies. Our latest project, along with our prayer shawls, was to knit and crochet dolls for Doctors Without Borders who were going to give vaccinations to children in the Dom-inic Republic. We will be meeting on scheduled Thursdays beginning in September. More information to follow!
