Dub, the one style of music that along with post-punk and early electronic music has probably had the most influence on the music of the last twenty years. The production techniques ofdub can be heard in most modern producers repertoire and have formed whole new scenes on their own. This design pays homage to the recordings of the Dub Specialist along with the movement of Dub music that came out of reggae and ska in those early days of Jamaicanmusic.

The LP aka the Long Playing Micro Groove has long been the mainstay of DJ’s, collectors, the general interest music listener along with the musicologist and scholar. Even though recordshave been around for over a century it was the transition over to the micro grooved stylus that played at 33 ⅓ RPM that truly changed the game. Not only did this change over to a finer groove on the vinyl allow for more music to be played on one side of the record it also enhanced the quality of the sound drastically as anyone who has listened to 78’s can attest to.

The inimitable Fela Kuti was a powerhouse of African jazz, funk and liberation politics who changed Nigerian music and so-cial discourse in ways that permanently altered its country’s landscape. Afro-Shrine was Fela’s nightclub, a place that he converted into a personal laboratory of music performance, dance, and was free of the constraints of the Nigerian military state that was active at the time. This design pays homage to Fela’s vision of what a music and social club can be with a 70’s Afro-Nite Light font overlayed on top of the African ontinent and Fela’s saxophone.

Not only was Rotary Connection a legendary psychedelic soul group that produced one of the finest pieces of music from that era, “Black Gold of the Sun” as featured in this installment of 101 Apparel it also refers to our newest design that pays homage to the Bozak rotary DJ mixer. This is a classic mixer that was used by Larry Levan at the Paradise Garage and by scores of other famous DJ’s. It’s a mixer that was famous for its analog warmth and depth of sound and has since become the template for many other mixers on the market.

Dancehall is a genre name taken from the famous dance halls in Jamaica where massive sound systems dominated the clubs where they played dub and reggae as a way to accentuates the sound systems booming bass. In many ways, early dance-hall was the move away from singers as the focus and a move towards deejays and sound system clashes as providing the real entertainment for listeners and dancers. During that time the dancehall 45 was massive, as it was a document of those legendary nights when sound systems would go head to head to see who could deliver the most righteous tunes along with the most electrifying sound.

Just like hip-hop producers will scour dusty record bins to find breaks to sample from old soul and funk records, there is also a market for finding those same breaks on disco records. Leg-endary disco producer Tom Moulton was a master at extending the breaks on classic disco tracks, or splicing breaks to keep the dancefloor in a heady rush of intoxication. Disco was cre-ated to make people dance all night, so creating these long extended breaks just raised the ante even higher.

This design pays tribute to the uber-classic track by one of the rawest and politically relevant groups of all time : Public Enemy. Peace and Rhythm is our tribute to one of greatest future jazz albums by Idris Muhammad, drummer extraordinaire, and also to the title track, a long space coda that is a fine example of what happens when you mixed afro-politics, mysticism, jazz and funk into a heady brew. Idris Muhammad is known within the hip-hop world for the sample-ability of his tracks, namely due to the way he played his drums, powerful, precise and ultra smooth. “Let The Music Play” is a dance classic released in 1983 by Shannon, a female vocalist from Washington DC who ushered in the popularity of the “freestyle” genre, a style of music that combined Latin American rhythms and a heavy disco influence with infectious pop hooks. The significance of this track is not only that it birthed “freestyle”, but also because it transcended the genre which it was a part of and was a massive hit on the hip-hop, dance music, and pop radio stations; a true multi-cul-tural phenomenon of its time.
