    2. Ten Datacenter Strategies

    from Kenneth Hess

    From www.serverwatch.com on June 17, 2010

Kenneth Hess proposed 10 datacenter strategies:

    2.1 Greening

    2.2 Consolidation

    2.3 Virtualization

    2.4 Leveraged Cloud Computing

    10

  • 8/3/2019 100917_Datacenter Strategies and Trends 2010

    Ten Datacenter Strategies (Cont.)

    11

  • 8/3/2019 100917_Datacenter Strategies and Trends 2010

    12/69

    2.1 Greening of Datacenter

    12

    To reduce power consumption, e.g.

    - Use Solid State Drives (SSD) instead of disk

    - Use computers which require less power

  • 8/3/2019 100917_Datacenter Strategies and Trends 2010

    13/69

    2.2 Consolidation

    Doing more with less

    such as switching to Linux.

    13

  • 8/3/2019 100917_Datacenter Strategies and Trends 2010

    14/69

    2.3 Virtualization

    Using higher-end hardware

to house multiple and disparate workloads

onto a single system or cluster of systems.

    14

  • 8/3/2019 100917_Datacenter Strategies and Trends 2010

    15/69

    2.4 Leveraged Cloud Computing

Using service offered by Commercial Cloud

    Providerwhich offers 24x7x365 availability,

    maintenance, support, etc.

    and save money.

    15

  • 8/3/2019 100917_Datacenter Strategies and Trends 2010

    16/69

    2.5 Private Cloud

Setting up your own cloud computing,

    tapping on all the equipment

    at your own datacenter.

    16

  • 8/3/2019 100917_Datacenter Strategies and Trends 2010

    17/69

    2.6 Disaster Recovery

    Setting up a mirror site

    with load balancers.

    17

  • 8/3/2019 100917_Datacenter Strategies and Trends 2010

    18/69

    2.7 Leveraged Content Delivery

    Instead of buying extra bandwidth,

you can use the service such as Akamai.

Sample customers of Akamaiare MTV, MySpace, Fox Interactive.

    18

  • 8/3/2019 100917_Datacenter Strategies and Trends 2010

    19/69

    2.8 Storage-Area Networks

Instead of using a lot of storage devices,

you should use Storage-Area Networks (SAN)

    which are

    - expandable

    - scalable

    - inexpensive

    19

  • 8/3/2019 100917_Datacenter Strategies and Trends 2010

    20/69

    2.9 Remote Backup

To ensure safe and secure data backup

and restore, online backup could be used

    and it is

    - inexpensive

    - reliable

    - agile

    20

  • 8/3/2019 100917_Datacenter Strategies and Trends 2010

    21/69

    2.10 Automation

    Automation is a key strategy

    to manage the new generation

    of datacenters.

    Fully automated datacenter

    will be available soon.

    24/69

    3.1 Datacenter Strategies

    from www.process.com

    From www.processor.com, Vol. 32, Issue 1,

January 1, 2010, two strategies were mentioned

3.1.1 A Different Shade of Greening

3.1.2 Maximizing the Value of Existing

    HW & SW

    24

  • 8/3/2019 100917_Datacenter Strategies and Trends 2010

    25/69

    3.1.1 Greening of Datacenter

    Info-Tech suggested that

it is still a good strategy to reduce energy costs.

Years ago, Datacenter had a power

density of about 500 watts per square meter

but in 2010, it is 20 times or more.

    25

  • 8/3/2019 100917_Datacenter Strategies and Trends 2010

    26/69

    Greening of Datacenter (Cont.)

    Three options have been mentioned

    1) Flywheel UPS

    2) Economizers

    3) Computer Systems Based on DC Power

    26

  • 8/3/2019 100917_Datacenter Strategies and Trends 2010

    27/69

    1) Flywheel

The use of a few-meter diameter flywheel

    running with electricity.

When electricity fails, the moment of inertia

    keeps the flywheel turning

and producing electricity for temporary use.

Flywheel UPS is greener and generate less hea

    than conventional battery-based UPS.

    28

  • 8/3/2019 100917_Datacenter Strategies and Trends 2010

    29/69

    2) Economizers

    Economizers are systems

    that use cool outside air

    to drop datacenter temperature

rather than using expensive air conditioning.

    29

  • 8/3/2019 100917_Datacenter Strategies and Trends 2010

    30/69

    3) Computer Systems Based on DC Power

Bring AC power from the street

    to charge up batteries

and then deliver the DC from batteries

    to computer equipment

    and save 6-12% of energy.

    (Some vendors claimed 15-30% saving)

    30

    31/69

    3.1.2 Virtualization

    Pund-it (www.pund-it.com)

    proposed virtualization

    to maximize the value

    of existing hardware and software.

    3.2 Microsoft Datacenter

    for Bing Search Engine

    From dcsblog.burtongroup.com

    on April 21, 2010,

Microsoft is looking at Solid State Disk (SSD)

for its datacenter for Bing Search Engine.

    32

  • 8/3/2019 100917_Datacenter Strategies and Trends 2010

    33/69

    Microsoft Datacenter (Cont.)

Microsoft wished to gain two benefits:

    - Reduce power consumption / node,

    e.g. a processor operates at 10 watts

    instead of 50 watts.

    - Smaller form factor, with small power supplies,

more servers could be packed in smaller space.
