Heritage Day Festival Weekend PostponedDue to the impending tropical

storm/hurricane that is due to hit our area over the weekend, all Heritage Festival Weekend activities have been postponed until October 23-25th. Same Time, Same Place Different Weekend.

The Marlborough Regional Chamber of Commerce Postpones the 20th Annual Heritage Day Festival Weekend, Located Downtown, Marlborough, MA until Friday, October 23nd thru Sunday, October 25th.

Friday night begins with Cushing Amusements Carnival and continues throughout the weekend.

Saturday from 12 to 8:00pm atop the upper deck at the park-ing garage on Granger Blvd. is the Oktoberfest, sponsored by RKG Financial and for the pre-sale price of $10 includes a beer mug and a free bever-age! Enjoy entertainment by German style “Oompah bands Schwartze Schafe and also The Bavarian Brothers! Local rock band Usual Suspects will also join in. 34th Annual Conant Craft Fair

Every fall, the Conant School PTO hosts an all-day craft fair at Conant School, in Acton, MA. This year the craft fair will take place on Sunday, October 25, 2015 from 10:00am – 4:00pm. Regular admission is $5.00; student and senior admission is $3.00.

This well-known craft fair fea-tures more than 80 leading craft-ers and artisans from across New England. It features hand-made items including clothing, hats & scarves, jewelry, pottery, soaps, holiday ornaments and decora-tions, glasswork, children’s toys, accessories and many more unique items. The craft fair also includes a snack bar and raffles.

The Conant School is located at 80 Taylor Road, just off Route 2 in Acton. It is handicap acces-sible and there is ample free parking.

FUN FAMILY ACTIVITIES TAILOR-MADE FOR AUTUMN

Fall is a great time to enjoy the great outdoors. Beautiful fall foliage coupled with great weather compel many people to spend ample time outdoors before the arrival of harsh winter weather drives them back indoors. The following are a handful of actvities that are tailor-made for fall.

• Apple picking: Perhaps no activity is more synonymous with fall than apple picking. Many apple orchards encourage customers to come by and pick their own apples in the fall. Once your family and you have scoured the orchard for the perfect apples, relax with a cup of warm apple cider before returning home to make some homemade apple sauce and, of course, a delicious apple pie.

• Hayride: Hayrides are another fall tradition, and many farms offer relax-ing hayrides throughout fall. Younger children who may tire if asked to patrol an apple orchard for apples might find a hayride is more their speed. Some farms may even allow customers to walk the grounds and visit the animals on the premises.

• Corn maze: Visiting a corn maze is another activity that many people instantly associate with fall. Some farmers transform their cornfields into corn mazes once the temperatures dip, and such mazes can be fun for adults and children alike. Though adolescents can often be trusted to find their way through corn mazes, younger kids should be accompanied by an adult.

AVCC Presents: What Do Judges Look

For?On Wednesday, October 7,

the Assabet Valley Camera Club (AVCC) will host a presentation by Maureen and Todd Mathieson exploring what judges look for when they evaluate photographic images. All photographers will find this interesting.

Maureen, who is now the club’s historian, joined AVCC in 1994 and held the office of president for 4 years. She has obtained judges for the club and was liaison for international salon competitions and for the River’s Edge Arts Alliance. Todd joined the club in 2000, and he also served as president for 4 years. He coordinates the club’s annual Photo Ops day, with a specialty in black light or unusual, exciting set-ups. Together the couple has served as liaison to the Friends of the Marlborough Public Library, which co-hosts an annual print exhibit.

The Mathiesons are both mem-bers of Photographic Association of America. For their service to the New England Camera Club Council and to local clubs where they serve as judges, last year they were awarded the MNEC (Master Member, New England Camera Club Council).

Their program is open to all, and admission is free. AVCC

welcomes both new and pro-spective members. We meet at 7:30 PM the first and third Wednesdays of each month from now through June. Meetings are held at the Hudson Senior Center, 29 Church St., Hudson. For more information, contact Liz West (978) 263-2853.

Sunshine ClubThere is a trip to see “The

Addams Family” musical on Sat, November 7 in Manchester, NH at the Palace Theatre with The Sunshine Club. $82. includes the bus, the show, a buffet lunch at the Puritan Back Room, and all gratuities. This show is a little quirky, but it has received great reviews! The Sunshine Club has great seats for this show start-ing in the 5th row and back in the orchestra section. The buffet lunch will be 1st and the show is a 2:00 matinee on Saturday. The bus will leave the WalMart in Whitinsville at 9:15 AM and the Westborough Senior Center at 10AM. Library To Hold Sundae Sunday

The Westborough Public Library resumes Sunday hours on October 18, 2015 with the Second Annual Sundae Sunday. Stop by the Library Meeting Room for a delicious make-your-own sundae bar, complete with jimmies, syrups, whipped cream, and toppings galore.

NEW this year: To celebrate Teen Read Week, Westborough teens will show off their knowl-edge of foods from the liter-ary world by preparing recipes

inspired by books in the Young Adult collection, in the library’s first-ever Literary World Food Showcase. Their food creations will be cut into sample sizes to be shared. Teens wanting to prepare a fictitious dish should sign up at http://goo.gl/forms/ZHfVHlPAqM.

The event begins at 1:00 pm when the library opens, and ends when the food runs out, so get there early!

Library Fall Book Sale

The Friends of the Westborough Public Library kicks off the fall book sales on Friday, October 2 and Saturday, October 3. The book sale will be open on Friday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m to 5 p.m in the library conference book on the lower level.

There is a huge selection of children, young adult and fiction and non fiction books. In addi-tion, the group will be selling tins of tea for $10.The special tin designed for the Friends of the Westborough Public Library make great gifts or additions to holiday baskets.

Textile Recycling Clothes, stuffed animals,

material, sheets, comforters, scatter rugs, shoes and back-packs are all common donations to a Textile Recycling program. Westborough Girl Scout troop 30633 will hold a textile recy-cling event on Saturday, October 17. It will be held from 9 a.m to 12 p.m. Donations may be dropped off at the main entrance to Westborough High School on West Main Street. At noon the truck from Bags2School will pick up the donations. The tex-tile recycling events held by the troop have been very successful. The 21 members of the troop are planning for a trip in June

2016. The troop members will have a yard sale on October 24 at Tufts Machine lot, are provid-ing babysitting services and col-lecting cans and bottles for the refund. For information please call 508-870-1895 or email [email protected]. The troop appreciates the community support of their trip.

Bus Trip To Wright’s Chicken Farm

Mark your calendar for Saturday, October 17th as we travel to Wright’s Chicken Farm in Rhode Island. The trip is open to all. The Friends of Westborough are sponsoring the bus trip. The bus will leave from Hastings School parking lot at 4 p.m and return about 7:30 p.m The thirty dollar payment includes motor coach ride as we socialize all the way there.

Marlborough Rotary Club Wants Your JUNK!The Marlborough Rotary Club invites one and all from all surround-

ing communities to clean out their attics or basements and get rid of their junk at the club’s Recycling event on Saturday, October 19, 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., at the Whitcomb Middle School in Marlborough.

Since fall 2011, the members of the Marlborough Rotary Club have suggested that members of the greater Marlborough community could rid themselves of all that junk they were finding during fall and spring cleaning for a modest price per car or compact truckload. They created a one-day project to recycle all the unwanted computers, electronics, appliances, and more. The event, open to ALL communities, brought hundreds of carloads of household items to be recycled rather than added to landfills.

Almost everything that had been sitting around in attics, basements, or garages could be recycled at this Recycling Day event for just $30 per car load or truck load. Items include:

Electronics of all types – computers, CPUs, games, accessories, cell phones, VCRs laptops, cameras, cables, wires, keyboards, mice

All electrical equipment – small appliances, motors, shop equipment, heaters, fans, extension cords, lamps

Vehicle batteriesLarge appliances – washers, dryers, microwaves, AC units, freezers,

People can rid themselves of all their metal and plastic junk; gain space in their homes for a very low cost; the environment is better for recycling all this junk; and the Marlborough Rotary Club Foundation will make a percentage of the fees to continue the club’s service to children and families of our community, literacy projects, clean water projects, and more.”

“The beauty of this project,” noted current Club President Michael Lashua, “is that it is both a service project and a fundraiser. Even when the funds raised were minimal, we knew that we had made a positive impact on the environment of our community.”

“The environmental impact keeps growing year after year. As of our spring recycling event, we have recycles 58, 291 pounds – or almost 30 tons! That’s huge,” McDonald concluded.

So, save the date! It’s Saturday, October 17, 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., at the Marlborough’s Whitcomb Middle School.

1 package (16.25 ounces) white cake mix Egg whites, water, vegetable oil to prepare mix 17 drops Wilton Orange Color Right Performance Color 3 drops Wilton Yellow Color Right Performance Color 1 package (10 ounces) Wilton Limited Edition Candy Corn Candy Melts Candy 1/4 cup heavy whipping cream 2/3 cup solid vegetable shortening 2 tablespoons honey 1 teaspoon Wilton Imitation Clear Vanilla Extract 2 cups confectioners’ sugar (about 1/2 pound) Candy corn for garnish (optional)Heat oven to 350°F. Prepare muf n pans with baking cups.

In large bowl, beat cake mix, egg whites, water and colors with electric mixer at low speed 30 seconds. Scrape bottom and sides of bowl; beat at medium speed 2 minutes. Divide batter evenly among baking cups, lling about

2/3 full.Bake 18-20 minutes or until

toothpick inserted in center comes out clean. Cool cupcakes in pans on cooling grid 5 minutes. Remove from pans; cool completely on grid.

In medium microwave-safe container, combine Candy Corn Candy Melts Candy and heavy cream. Microwave at half (50 percent) power 1 minute. Stir. Microwave on half power in 30-second intervals, stirring between each, until melts are almost melted. Stir thoroughly until mixture is smooth. Cool slightly.

In large bowl, beat shortening with electric mixer until light and uffy. Add Candy Melts mixture

and beat until smooth. Beat in honey and vanilla. Gradually add confectioners’ sugar and beat until light and uffy. Pipe or spread onto cooled cupcakes. Top with candy corn, if using.

Stamp Collecting Month

To encourage young people to begin the life-long hobby of stamp collecting, also known as philately, the Spellman Museum of Stamps & Postal History at Regis College in Weston is giv-ing free admission to all young-sters throughout the month of October.

This offer is part of the Museum’s celebration of National Stamp Collecting Month.

Free packets of stamps plus various stamp collecting mate-rials and an instruction book-let await all future collectors. In addition, stamp games and hunts in the Museum’s galleries will help introduce all visitors to the wide world of stamps. Current exhibits include selec-tions from members’ collections, comics on stamps, mail carried by zepellines, a history of rural

free delivery, a celebration of National Hispanic Heritage Month and even a dress made out of a stamp.

In addition a free book-let featuring famous Hispanic Americans on US stamps will also be available.

The celebration of the month also includes a members dinner on October with guest speak-er Dr. Joseph Adelman from Framingham State and author of several books on postal history. The public is invited.

The Museum also offers (for a small fee) evaluations of person-al stamp collections by appoint-ment.

A Family Day is scheduled for Halloween afternoon, October 31, from noon to 4:00.

Teachers who wish to bring their students to the Museum or have a program presented at their school will receive a dis-count of the fee if they register

this month for visits anytime in the school year.

Coming in November is an exhibit on the history of the Katharine Gibbs Secretarial School, a free comic book evalu-ation and a visit from Amelia Earhart (Nov. 11 at 11:00).

Fort Devens MuseumAre you ready for two days

in Venice and two weeks in Northern Italy and Slovenia? Hemingway’s “Farewell to Arms” is the geographic set-ting for this proposed trip during May 11-25, 2016. We intend to visit many World War I interesting and scenic sites such as Venice, Cortina, Asolo, Caporetto Slovenia, and enjoy the best of cuisines and wines of the Friuli and Veneto areas.

Ellie Buford, a former Harvard resident now living in the area to be visited, is an expe-rienced traveler and will be the tour director. Viaggi Unlimited Travel in Aviano, Italy, will handle all travel arrangements. Local guides will accompany the

twenty-two travelers to the vari-ous sites, museums, and monu-ments.

Camp Devens was established in 1917 when the United States entered World War I, and two infantry divisions and many smaller units trained here en route to overseas locations. For people in Europe, World War I began earlier in 1914. Europe has already started commemorat-ing the centennial of that Great War. While the soldiers who trained at Camp Devens fought on the Western Front in France, this trip offers the opportunity to view Italy’s enduring landscape further east and to recognize the sacrifices and challenges in war during the era.

Story Of Civil War RegimentDid you know that an infantry regiment of about 1,000 men trained

at what was once called Groton Junction, now Ayer, and fought in the Civil War with the Union’s Third Army to clear Confederate troops out of the Mississippi River basin in Louisiana? To find out about this regiment, the 53rd Massachusetts Volunteers, who trained at Camp Stevens, come to the Fort Devens Museum on Saturday October 17th.

Many of the men of the 53rd were recruited from local communities - Ashby, Fitchburg, Groton, Harvard, Lancaster, Leominster, Lunenburg, Pepperell, Townsend, and Westford - in addition to a large number from towns west as far as Gardner, south to Sterling and Clinton, and a few from the Boston area.

Camp Stevens was located on a wedge of land bounded by Old Fitchburg Road (near a reconfigured present-day Fitchburg Road, Route 2A), the Nashua River, and the tracks of the old Peterborough and Shirley Railroad (which extended only as far as Greenville, New Hampshire, from Ayer). The camp, named after Major general Isaac Ingalls Stevens of Andover, who died in a Civil War battle in Virginia, was also located next to what would later become the Fort Devens airfield.

Hear the saga of the 53rd, including the trials and tribulations of travel by train and steamboats to the New Orleans area, the regiment’s battle campaign up through northern Louisiana, and the eventual trip home by Mississippi steamboat and trains. It was an adventure fraught with danger and disease, altogether different for these Massachusetts farmers and craftsmen.

Telling this story will be Barry E. Schwarzel of Ayer. For six years he served with the Army Reserves in the 187th Infantry Brigade sta-tioned at Fitchburg and subsequently at Fort Devens, reaching the rank of Staff Sergeant. After the Army, he worked for 26 years at Digital Equipment Corporation, and for two years operated a diner at the Shirley/Lancaster town line.

The program starts at 1:00 PM on October 17th at the museum, which will be open from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM on that day. The museum is located on the third floor at 94 Jackson Road, Devens and is wheelchair accessible. This event is free and open to the public and light refreshments will be served.
