William the Conqueror

● born into Norman aristocracy (he was a nobel)

● when his father died, he was recognized as Duke of Normandy

● when King of England died, Harold, William’s cousin, crowned○ But…. William claimed

himself as heir

Battle of Hastings

● William sailed to England from Normandy

● defeated Harold at the Battle of Hastings in 1066○ crowned at Westminster

Abbey○ new Norman ruling class

Norman England

● spent first years securing border● surveyed his kingdom

○ Domesday Book- oldest valid legal document in Britain

Norman England

● Left England to live in Normandy○ England control by regents (stand ins)○ divided his land between his two sons

● language- influx of French and Latin words into the English language

● separated by geography● cultures of east and west became vastly

different○ West = Latin based○ East = Greek based

● with change in language- came change in religious practices

East-West Schism- Schism of 1054

● divided Christianity○ Eastern Orthodox○ Western Catholicism

● Issue over papal authority

What’s a schism?

schism- division between people

Papal Authority

● three main bishops recognized: Rome (main), Alexandria, Antioch

● joined by bishops in Constantinople and Jerusalem

Papal Authority

● Pope (bishop of Rome) wanted to maintain control despite other bishops gaining power

● in the East, the Bishop of Constantinople seen as the head○ called a patriarch in the East

Schism of 1054

● both excommunicated each other ○ excommunication = kicked out of

the church● excommunications removed

in 1965 by Pope John Paul VI and Patriarch Athenagoras I of Constantinople

Significance

● two different branches of Christianity○ West = Catholics (and Protestant Christians)○ East = Greeks, Russians, Eastern Europe

● even more division between East and West○ different identities

● divide exists today- can’t share communion (taking the “body” and “blood” of Christ)

With a partner….● create a 8-9 line dialogue between the patriarch in the East

and the Pope in the West about who should be supreme and WHY!

● using information from lecture, how would they support their own point-of-view?

● HINT: look at the reasons for why Rome should be supreme and why Constantinople should be supreme- you will need to look at your notes from last unit and last week!!!
