5.2 Terms5.2.1 Types of lubrication
A basic concept for the type of lubrication has been specified for each SEW-EURODRIVE gear unit. Fundamentally, a combination of types is possible:
Splash lubricationThe oil level is low; gearing and bearing parts that are not immersed in the oil sump arelubricated by splashing oil. Standard lubrication type for horizontal mounting positions(M1 or M3).
Bath lubrication The gear unit is (almost) completely filled with oil; all gearing and bearing positions areeither completely or partly submerged in the oil bath.• Standard lubrication type with oil expansion tank for:
– Swiveling mounting positions with horizontal gear units beyond a certaininclination angle (depending on type of gear unit, version and size)
– Vertical gear units (mounting position M5) – Upright mounting position (M4) with X.K gear units
• Standard lubrication type with oil expansion tank for:– Upright mounting position (M4) with X.F gear units
Pressure lubrication
With pressure lubrication, the oil level is low. Gearing and bearing parts that are notimmersed in the oil sump are lubricated by oil using a shaft end pump or motor pumpthrough lubrication lines.Pressure lubrication is used when:• Splash lubrication is not possible (see the relevant mounting positions and variants
under "Bath lubrication")• Instead of bath lubrication if pressure lubrication is not desired and/or is not thermally
advantageous (see the relevant mounting positions and variants)• A Drywell sealing system is required (only with a vertical output shaft with LSS facing
down, separate publication),• High input speeds are present and the speed limit for other types of lubrication is
exceeded (dependant on the gear unit size, version, and number of stages)

5.2.2 Types of coolingThe following types of cooling are differentiated for the gear units:
Natural coolingThe gear unit is cooled by natural convection.
Fan cooling A fan is installed on the gear unit drive shaft; its airflow improves the transmission of heatfrom the gear unit surface to the environment (see chapter 5.5.1)
Integrated cooling
This refers to cooling systems installed directly in the gear unit housing or mounted veryclose to it, e.g. a water cooling cover (see chapter 5.5.2) or a water cooling cartridge(see chapter 5.5.3).
Circulation cooling
The gear unit oil is pumped out of the gear unit to an external heat exchanger by a pump(motor pump or shaft end pump). This normally involves oil supply systems with oil/wateror oil/air heat exchangers.
5.3 Selection of lubricants
5.3.1 General information on selecting oilUnless a special arrangement is made, SEW-EURODRIVE delivers the drives withoutoil fill. This does not apply to auxiliary drives and primary gear units.
STOPThe oil viscosity and type (mineral/synthetic) that are to be used are determined bySEW-EURODRIVE specifically for each order. This information is noted in the orderconfirmation and on the gear unit’s nameplate. Any deviation from these conditionsrequires consultation with SEW-EURODRIVE.
STOPThis means the gear unit must be filled with the correct oil grade and quantity beforestartup. The corresponding information can be found on the nameplate of the gear unit.

The following tables provide an overview of mineral and synthetic oils.
Mineral oilStandards Lubrication oils are divided into ISO VG viscosity classes according to ISO 3448 and
DIN 51519.
Synthetic oilStandards Lubrication oils are divided into ISO VG viscosity classes according to ISO 3448 and
DIN 51519.
In addition to having the required viscosity, the oil must fulfill the following criteria:• CLP oils according to DIN 51517-3• Micro-pitting test according to FVA, FV no. 54/ I-IV, GFT class high, damage force
level >10
If synthetic oil is used, SEW-EURODRIVE recommends polyalphaolefin-based oil(CLP HC).

Installation and connection information
Provide for a low-vibration installation location max. 1 meter from the gear unit. Installthe cooling system at the same level or lower than the gear unit. If this is not possible, contact SEW-EURODRIVE.The cooler must be installed in such a way that input and output air can flow unobstruct-edly. You have to provide for sufficient ventilation and protection against dirt. Adhere tothe following basic conditions when connecting the cooling system:• Avoid a short circuit in the cooling circuit. The suction and pressure lines must be
installed on the gear unit as far apart as possible.• A reduction in the indicated cable cross section is not allowed.• It is important that you choose the correct wall thickness and material when selecting
pipes, hoses and screw fittings. Preferably, use composite material seals.
The oil-air cooling system is delivered in the design as illustrated as standard. Theconnections of the cooling system are located on the lefthand side of the system. Inorder to keep the cable lengths to the gear unit short, the suction and pressureconnection should be aligned towards the gear unit during installation. The connectionscan be moved to the other side if required. To do so, loosen the pump head [1] and theregister [2], rotate them by 180° and re-attach them.

5.6.2 Connection powerThe table below shows the power of the heating that may be installed.
5.6.3 Notes regarding the function of the oil heater• The thermostat of the oil heater is factory-set to a temperature of about 5 K above
the respective limit temperature. The thermostat turns off the oil heater at thistemperature. Only then, the gear unit may be started up. If the temperature fallsbelow the limit temperature by approx. 5 K, the thermostat activates the oil heateragain.
• The thermostat and oil heater are installed on the gear unit and ready for operation, but they must be wired properly and connected to the external power supply beforestartup.
• Contact SEW-EURODRIVE if a differing oil viscosity class is used or if ambienttemperatures fall below the identified limit temperature.
