Some people (most) would rather stick a fork in their eye than address somethingvery difficult such as how to handle a workplace bully. Sometimes it can seemimpossible and hope fades.

Here's What Happens:

• The bully upsets you. • There is increased stress, perhaps loss of productivity and an increase of

personal self-doubt causing frustration for you. • You start to search out what to do' and it seems difficult, overwhelming or

challenging. You feel 'this is too big to handle' . • You start to ignore, minimi!e or get distracted about the bullying problem. • You feel that 'this is too big to handle' and you start to develop e"cuses as to

why you are unable, incapable or not e#uipped to move through the situation.

Procrastination refers to the counterproductive deferment of actions or tasks to alater time. $t s a mechanism for coping with an"iety associated with starting orcompleting a task or decision.

The rela"ed type of procrastinators view their responsibilities negatively and avoidthem by directing energy into other tasks. $t is a form of denial or cover-up&therefore, typically no help is being sought. 'urthermore, they are also unable todefer gratification. They avoid situations that would cause displeasure, indulginginstead in more en oyable activities.

+. Tense-afraid procrastinators usually feel overwhelmed with pressure, unrealisticabout time, uncertain about goals, and many other negative feelings. They feel asense of malaise. 'eeling that they lack the ability or focus to successfully completea task, they tell themselves "I need to unwind and relax. It's better to take it easyfor the afternoon, and start anew later" . Their 'relaxing' is often temporary andineffective, and leads to more stress as time runs out, deadlines approach and theperson feels increasingly guilty and apprehensive. This behavior becomes a cycle offailure and delay, as plans and goals are put off and re-scheduled. Since they areuncertain a out their goals , they often feel awkward with people who appearconfident and goal-oriented, which can lead to depression. They withdraw from sociallife, avoiding contact even with close friends.
