As a member of the College Senior Executive and leader of the Academic Executive, the Head of Learning and Teaching influences the learning culture, both present andfuture. The Head of Learning and Teaching oversees the quality of learning and teaching across the College and plays a critical role in the promotion of best practice learningand teaching strategies. Staff appointment, orientation, welfare, probation, accreditation and promotion as well as development of quality teaching staff are otherresponsibilities of the Head of Learning and Teaching. The role also chairs Professional Learning and eLearning Committees that lead educational as well as professionallearning initiatives.

Learning For The FutureWhat do you think of when you think of the future? We all have a common interest in the future: kids. What does the future hold for them? The key question is: What does thefuture of learning and teaching look like and how will we create it?

When we think of the future we usually do one of two things: dream or dread. When we dream, we start with an idea – a positive trend and take this idea to its logicalconclusion. We ‘imagine’ a model that represents our hopes for all that is possible. Maybe that idea is a belief in the promise of technology to transform learning. What mightthat look like? We might dream of being able to assess each student’s needs and then magically give them exactly what they need, exactly when they need it. But this isimpossibly perfect and simplistic, ignoring the complexities of the learning process.

When we dread, we start with a fear - a downward trend and we likewise play out this idea to its logical conclusion. We ‘imagine’ a dystopia, one filled with our fears of whatmight happen in the future. Here the very same issue, the use of technology in the classroom, might veer off in a completely different direction with dreadful outcomes. Kidstrapped in a matrix of robotic construction with predators at every turn. Of course, this is equally simplistic and ignores technology’s potential.

Whether dreaming or dreading, our role in the future we imagine is usually passive, where the future is something that happens to us and to those around us. But there is athird way of looking at the future. Between dreaming and dreading, lies designing. For designers the future isn’t a far off place, it’s a place where they work everyday. Design

Page 3: 10 September 2014 - Radford College Bulletin 10 September 2014… · Whether dreaming or dreading, our role in the future we imagine is usually passive, where the future is something

is a form of activism. We need to ‘imagine’ the future we want and then pick up the tools to start building it. Designers see the world as a kitbag of parts where they reshapeand reassemble the best pieces of what is already out there, to create something new and better.

What does it take then to rethink learning? It’s not about replicating what we always do and have always done. It’s about selecting and integrating many different parts tocreate the foundations of a new model that is project-based, game-inspired and encapsulates social and digital media learning.

From birth to adulthood, society’s purpose is critical to the acceleration of learning. What is most important for kids today is learning how to learn. Society must prepare globallearners who are ready to tackle challenges that they cannot anticipate. Education is the system created to serve that purpose by advancing international mindedness, whichvalues the world as the context for learning, develops conceptual understanding across a range of subjects as well as offer opportunities to inquire, act and reflect.

Today far too many students exit the K-12 system with a fixed rather than a growth mindset – a love of learning and a resilience that is essential for great accomplishment.Existing models of schooling needs some attention. To understand this we need to look at what creates a student’s experience. What are students learning? How are studentslearning and how do we know they are learning, and where and when learning happens and who is involved? How we configure these parts often determines how studentsmove through the learning process. More often than not these parts form rigid barriers blocking the way forward or putting students on the wrong path. Various innovatorshave focused on adjusting one or two of these parts to help students move forward, which has spurred important progress.

Learning that is integrated by design, addressing all parts at once rather than one or two in isolation, will make it possible for students to accelerate their learning. The bestdesign models require ‘kid power’, where students must apply themselves to the learning process. It’s our job as educators to give them this opportunity, which is moreprevalent now than ever before. We need to encourage students to become global citizens, active, compassionate and lifelong learners who inquire to create a better worldthrough intercultural understanding and respect.

Key attributes central to the future of learning are:

PERSONALISED: to fit each learnerLEARNER-DRIVEN: to let students own their learningAPPLIED: to let students learn by doingCOST-EFFECTIVE: to be feasible at scaleTECH-ENABLED: to leverage technologies that assist learning (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HbVKPhVCRFI)

Of course students don’t power the future of learning on their own. A set of outside conditions can either block progress or help it take off. Without the right conditions thefuture of learning cannot move forward. Just ‘imagine’ what the future of learning would look like if we align the central ideas with the conditions that help them succeed. Itwould be a future where schools assist students in getting what they need to become successful learners and to accelerate their learning.

While school is critical, it isn’t the only place where learning takes place. Students must be able to explore all their opportunities for learning both in school andbeyond. Creating an integrated system, students will practise becoming lifelong learners ready to go on to university or good jobs, ready for the challenges andopportunities of the future that awaits them.

NAPLAN 2014 – Years 7 & 9Mathew Irving - Director of Studies Y7-Y10

Years 7 & 9 participated in National Assessment Program - Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) from 13th to the 15th May. NAPLAN is an annual national assessment andstudents participate in tests in reading, writing, language conventions (spelling, grammar and punctuation) and numeracy. The results of NAPLAN are reported to parentsusing Bands. Scaled scores within these Bands are reported to schools.

NAPLAN tests skills that are essential for every child to progress through life, such as reading, writing, spelling, grammar and numeracy. The content of each test is informedby the national Statements of Learning for English and mathematics. At Radford, we use NAPLAN as just one part of our overall assessment and reporting program. AsNAPLAN is a "one-off" test, it must be viewed in context with the curriculum and assessment practices already embedded in the College. NAPLAN is a useful tool todetermine student progress over time; however, it is important to note that NAPLAN is not a standardized test. This means the skills and expectations are not the same fromone year to the next.

Overall, Radford students continue to perform well in all areas of testing. Our Year 7 students continue to perform higher than the ACT State mean and above ACTIndependent schools. Our Year 9 students continue to grow as cohort and out-perform all ACT schools in Reading, Grammar and Numeracy.

ReflectionFather Richard Browning

Greatness and children

The disciples came to Jesus and asked, “Who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?” Jesus called a child, whom he put among them, and said, “Truly I tell you, unlessyou change and become like children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. Whoever becomes humble like this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.Whoever welcomes one such child in my name welcomes me.” Matthew 18.1-4 (NRSV)

Jesus does not buy into the discussion about who is the greatest; who is the winner; who comes first. He turns things upside down. Jesus tells a parable with a child. In Jesus’day, a child had no rights, no power, no inheritance, no claim on anyone or thing. Jesus is saying that greatness is possible only when a person inhabits the place of the mostvulnerable, the one who has most to learn, the most to grow. If you think you have made it, then careful, you may have just lost it. Any adult in Jesus’ day would be veryunsettled by his words. Jesus is saying that real greatness is accessible to everyone. Jesus is saying there is no limit to reward, it is not a finite entity that has to be foughtover between the haves and have nots – EVERYONE can be like a child, everyone can inhabit the land of the child.

So you want to be great? Then change. Change and become like a child: contingent upon relationships, powerless, gifted at play, identified not by your ability but by who youbelong to. Unless you change and become like that, then you will never. NEVER! So you want to be great? Then change and become like a child. And all that belongs toGod is yours.

A child climbing a tree went a few branches too far. He froze and could not climb down. No amount of coaxing worked and the ladder did not reach far enough. The neighbourtried, after the older brother, as well as a passing SES volunteer. Later that afternoon a man came and talked him down to a lower point and asked him to jump, “I will catchyou”, he said. The boy hesitated briefly before letting go. Falling through the air the boy landed safely in the strong man’s arms. Nothing more was said. The strong man wasthe boy’s father.

RAS - Healthy Body, Healthy Soul Week (next week, 15-19 September)Contact: Ms Vic D'Alton

Healthy Body, Healthy Soul is a RAS initiative designed to alert the Radford student community to the need to be in tune with maintaining a healthy existence. Life can beso busy that people often fail to notice how important it is to look after oneself – to take time out to appreciate a healthy body, and to have balance in one’s life. We allstruggle at times, sometimes due to a heavy workload, sometimes for other reasons, sometimes we can’t put our finger on it, but balance is also important for a healthy soul. We need to support each other during the difficult times that we have and know how to be a good friend, and also know when it is important to talk to an adult if you’re notsure how best to support your friend.

The Healthy Body, Healthy Soul initiative wants students to appreciate physical and mental health and not take either for granted. The initiative also acknowledges thatsome members of our community struggle from time to time in their physical health and their mental health. This initiative includes activities over one week - Week 9 (15-19September) designed to encourage students to explore aspects of Five Ways to Well-Being: Be Active, Connect, Learn, Take Notice and Give Back. As part of theawareness project, students will have opportunities to appreciate a healthy body through the wheelchair experience and participate in Zumba. For a healthy soul there will berandom acts of kindness, assembly presentations, a mufti day to wear your colour (for a donation of a book or buck to go to Lifeline), a BBQ, a band playing and an outdoorlounge to chill out and reflect on what it means to you to have a Healthy Body, Healthy Soul.

From the Head of Junior SchoolPaul Southwell

IPSHA ConferenceAs you read this week's JS Bytes, I will be away from the Junior School. I will be in Sydney from Tuesday of this week, attending the Biennial National Independent PrimarySchools Heads Association of Australia conference.

The conference promises much, as it follows on from many of the things I have been talking about this year. Amongst the themes to be explored are:

growth in schools, improving over provinggrowth mindsets in dealing with leadership issuesmoving from will to skill - student academic motivation vs academic knowledge and competence.

The conference will end with a session with Sir Ken Robinson - it's not natural talent that drives personal success but rather an interplay among talent, passion, attitude andopportunity. I'm looking forward to my first IPSHA conference attendance since 2009.

Tonight I have just come from a lovely staff meeting where Junior School staff discussed writing and NAPLAN. A strong meeting with a stronger focus upon assessment.Following this meeting I was able to attend the Andrew Douch parent presentation, dealing with our move a to 1-to-1 program next year. Andrew was very good - afterspending the entire day working with staff, In particular I enjoyed his focus upon;

PurposePracticalityWisdom

Week 8 We have enjoyed most of our Learning Journeys but the best lies ahead. Year Six Exhibition, the culmination of our PYP journey is just around the corner!

Father's Day BrekkieOver 150 fathers and father figures enjoyed a wonderful Father's Day celebration on Friday morning. Fiona Godfrey spoke to the guests about the importance that fathersplay in the lives of their children and thanked our fathers for all the support they provide to our students and school. A special thank you must also go to our Junior Schoolstaff for organising this community event, in particular Mrs Trish Smith for her catering and organisation to make this event possible.

Winter SportsAs our winter cocurricular sports come to an end, we wish to congratulate all Junior School students and teams that participated with enthusiasm and sportsmanship across awide range of sports on offer in the College. We are extremely proud of the way our students represent our school on the sporting field every weekend. A big thank you mustgo to our coaches and managers, for giving up their time and to our dedicated parents, for their early mornings, late evenings and driving around.

Warmest RegardsPaul Southwell

Join us on a family bushwalk around the Forest Trail at the top of Black Mountain Nature Reserve. A light afternoon tea will be provided at the end of the walk. Flyer

PYP IN ACTION TERM 2, WEEK 8, 2014

PYP Coordinator: Belinda Reitstatter

This section of our Junior School Bytes is designed to keep our school community informed about our Primary Years Programme curriculum in the Junior School.

Central to the beliefs and practices of the IB is the notion that schools continually invest in professional learning, shared practice and development of staff. Not only is thisaimed at encouraging a culture of continual improvement and reflective practice, but it is also to inspire creativity and critical thinking about teaching and learning.

The recent review of our language practices in the Junior School and the development of our reading, writing and spelling appendices have been an important step indeveloping a more consistent approach across the Junior School. Over the last two terms we have analysed student data and trends, read current research, questioned thepurpose and practicalities of our approach and received expert assistance from leaders in the field.

We have been most fortunate to be guided by the findings and knowledge of Tessa Daffern, a PhD Candidate at Charles Sturt University. Tessa is researching effectivespelling instruction encompassing a range of linguistic and cognitive processes. These include phonological word features (what the word sounds like), orthographic features(what letter sequences are required or rules may be involved) and morphological features (what meaning, form, origins, and connections can be made). Tessa’s in-depthstudy has certainly reminded us of the importance of finding ways to ignite children’s curiosities and interest in words. She has assisted us in the initial stages of our reviewand made recommendations for a balanced approach to language learning.

Our very own Linguist in Residence, Miss Emily Begbie, has also assisted our staff in this area, through transferring the theoretical components of Tessa’s findings intopractical classroom strategies. Her program major of Applied Linguistics from ANU, together with her broad and varied teaching experiences, have provoked the thoughts ofour staff and invited us to consider the science of words with genuine enthusiasm.

Another guiding expert, who has had a significant impact on the way we have reviewed our planning, assessment and moderation of language practices, is Miss JudyGeeves. Judy has recently completed her doctoral studies in Mathematics at Charles Sturt University. Her skillful analysis of data has supported us to identify areas ofsuccess and those in need of refinement. Judy has spent many years as a chief NAPLAN marker for writing. Her understanding of language is phenomenal and has certainlyadded rigor to our conversations and the evaluation process of the way we teach writing, spelling and grammar.

Towards the end of the year, we plan to review our Program of Inquiry, with an intention of embedding the agreed practices for language development within. I look forward topublishing on Radford Online both the Language Policy and appendices, together with the updated Program of Inquiry towards the end of Term 4.
