1. Using personal data sets in Cognos BusinessIntelligenceIndividual business users can now use their own personal data by using the My Data Sets feature. Auser can import a text or Excel file, which can contain large spreadsheets with thousands of rows, andit will create a stand alone reporting package. The user can then generate a report based on thisdata. The user will have write access to this reporting package and may share it among otherbusiness users. Business users have the ability to delete their own personal data sets. CognosAdministrators have the ability to manage all users personal data sets as well as other settings andpermissions. The My Data Sets feature can be accessed by users at the following two locations.

2. Create and customize userinterface profilesIn Cognos 10.2.2, you now have the ability to create customized User Interface (UI) profiles to controlthe features and functionality that are available in the User Interface for Workspace Advanced Users.The default user interface profiles still exist, but now, once enabled by your administrator, you havethe ability to create new profiles and customize them in the Library tab in the Cognos Administrationconsole. You also have the ability to choose whether to automatically show next generationfunctionality in the UI when the software is upgraded.

3. New options to managedynamic cubesAutomatic optimization of in-memory aggregatesThis new functionality minimizes the number of manual Aggregate Advisor runs, reduces the need togenerate comprehensive workload logs, and improves report performance by adjusting the set of in-memory aggregates over time to better match the query activity.Memory utilization improvements for dynamic cubesMemory utilization improvements were implemented in the 10.2.2 release of Cognos. First, dimensionmembers can now be optionally shared between dynamic cubes and virtual cubes that reside on thesame server to reduce the overall memory footprint. Also, the size of the member cache has beenreduced and requires approximately 550 bytes per member. Finally, the query service now recognizeswhen the JVM heap is nearly full and attempts to release resources from in-memory caches to avoidout of memory exceptions.Near real-time updates of dynamic cubes dataWith near real-time updates, data can be inserted into fact and aggregate tables in the datawarehouse without stopping dynamic cubes. Dynamic cubes can consume the inserted new recordsimmediately and IBM Cognos BI queries return consistent data. The data caches are updated and notrebuilt.


4. Support for IBM CognosTheme Designer

Your companys logo, colors, and typeface all reflectyour business brand. Carrying this look and feel to yourBI solution looks professional and consistent. With thearrival of Cognos 10.2.2, IBM now makes it easier toskin Cognos with your companys graphical assets.Long gone are the days of digging through folders tolocate layout files in order to modify images or addlogos. Once installed, the IBM Cognos Theme Designer

gives you a graphical user interface to modify colors, add or replace images, or edit HTML to achievea certain look and feel. You also have the flexibility to create multiple themes for your users to choose



from. The IBM Cognos Theme Designer can customize your IBM Cognos Connection, IBM CognosViewer, IBM Cognos Workspace as well as IBM Cognos Report Studio and IBM Cognos WorkspaceAdvanced.

5. ReportbookletsUsing report booklets allows you to prepare multiple reports and bundle them in a single document todeliver to your end users. This is extremely valuable in scheduling reports as your end users willreceive one attachment and email for the reports they use.Report booklets can provide a single table of contents, sequential page numbering, and rationalizedprompting to prevent redundant data collection. Report booklets can be scheduled, saved, and run inIBM Cognos Connection like other IBM Cognos BI reports.

6. Dynamically named worksheet tabs inExcel 2007 outputYou now have the ability to dynamically name the tabs in an Excel 2007 output. The tab names willbe based on the data items that are used to break pages. Below is an example by Product Line usingthe Go Sales reporting package.Without setting a page break in the report the current output in HTML is displayed below.

To create a simple page break, the Product Line data item is selected. Then we select Structure >Set Page Break.

7. Tabbed reports inHTML outputAnother exciting feature in Cognos 10.2.2 is the option to display report output as tabs, versus pages,in HTML. You no longer have to use some advanced reporting techniques, such as JavaScript, toachieve this popular report requirement. Simply go to the Report Properties in Report Studio and clickon the View Pages As Tabs drop down to take advantage of this function. If you choose this optionand output to Excel, the tabs will translate to individual worksheets within the workbook.

8. IBM Cognos Active ReportpreviewActive Report now has a preview option that you can use to format an active report and immediatelysee the layout changes. You no longer have to run the report whenever you make a formattingchange. Simply click the Active Report Preview button on the Explorer Bar to see the report preview.Click the Page Design button to return back to designing your report.

9. Enhancements to extensible visualizationsEnhancements were made to the RAVE Visualization charts so that it is easier for the user to makeupdates to the chart by adding additional chart properties. For example, the report developer is nowable to update Chart Axis titles in Report Studio instead of the old way which involved using the RAVEVisualization editor and having to actually edit JSON code.



Another helpful feature added with 10.2.2 is that the developer can now convert one type ofvisualization chart to another type without having to re-author the data items in the originalvisualization.

Additionally, some chart types no longer require the developer to insert data items into every categorydrop zone in order to use a visualization. For example, you can create a visualization by putting adata item in the measures drop zone and the categories drop zone, while leaving the series drop zoneempty.

10. Dynamic Cube Hardware sizingcalculatorCognos will now have the ability to help users estimate the Hardware resources needed to support aDynamic Cube. Before the calculator was available, the administrator would have to guesstimate thesize needed through trial and error. The estimates are based on the two largest dimensions in thecube and the number of concurrent queries per report. The calculated output gives the requiredmemory size, number of processor cores, and the amount of hard disk space that is needed tosupport the cube.
