IntroductionFictional character Forrest Gump said that “life is like a box of chocolates. You never know what you’re gonna get”. However, I

take a different view…

When you design your life, create a vision for yourself and set out

on a course to bring that vision to reality, you’ll know exactly

what you’re gonna get.

Design your own path

Don’t get me wrong – it’s not a matter of setting goals and then

just taking each day as they come. But if you know what you want

to achieve, take consistent action towards that achievement,

eliminate your fears and remain focused and persistent throughout,

then it becomes a lot easier to eliminate the “unknown”.

I find it a lot more interesting going through life being an active

participant and having goals that you want to achieve.

Many years ago, as my short military career was coming to an end,

I found myself not knowing what I wanted to do afterwards.

I had no serious goals.

My wife and I had recently started our family – having married

just two years prior, with our second child just over a year old.

I found myself going in several different directions, looking at

different ‘opportunities’ and indecisive about which way to go.

There was no path.

It was around this time that I came across the Personal

Development industry and inspiring speakers. An important

teaching I learned was that, creating goals help narrow your focus.

It wasn’t until I sat down and created a plan -drafted a course- that

I took decisive action to (at the time) begin a career in the

Information Technology industry.

Many of us could take action without having a plan. In fact, many

of us do at times.

But having a plan and a sense of purpose will launch you into the

right actions and help align the fundamental universal laws to

work for you; such as, the Law of Sowing and Reaping, which

says that you must put something in (sow), before you reap

benefits in return. Or, the Law of Attraction, which stipulates that

you will attract the people and circumstances in harmony with

your dominant thoughts.

In this brief report, my goal is to share steps that I’ve gone through

previously – that you can leverage to help take control and

eliminate the seemingly never-ending routines that get us nowhere,

so you can accomplish more!

I’m going to outline the core fundamentals of setting goals, taking

action and maintaining your focus. Following the steps on this

report will go a long way in helping you reduce mind clutter,

increase productivity and get more accomplished. As a result, youwill see yourself taking more effective action.

So, let us dive in and make things happen!

Step 1:

UnderstandingYour Values It's not hard to make decisions when you know what your values are.

~Roy Disney

What do you stand for?

What do you believe in?

What’s important to you?

Know what you stand for

Understanding your values is a critical first step for launching a planto get into action and achieving your goals. Often disregarded, this

foundation brings clarity to why you do what you do, and sets the

tone for goal setting, remaining focused and staying motivated.

When you live according to values that are not congruent with your

goals, you will find yourself out of balance and even frustrated with

your level of achievement. For example, if your core values include

freely spending money on material items, but you set a goal to

consistently save every month, then conflict will always exist

between the two.

On the other hand, if you identify health as a core value and you set a

goal to visit the gym 3 times a week and eat a healthy diet, then

achieving that goal will become easier, as it aligns with your value.

It is important to know that as humans, when faced with a choice, we

will mostly choose in accordance with our strong values.

Accordingly, a key to taking decisive actions that will bring you

closer to your goals is to know your values and live by them.

Starting today, identify what you stand for and commit to living

consistently and in conformity with those values.

The following table identifies some sample core values. Review this

list and begin thinking about some of your own values. Because this

list is not exhaustive, you may even think of some others that are not

included here.

Take Action:

Think about and list your core values. What is most important to

you? What do you believe in? Prioritize this list in order of

importance from 1-10.

Now that you have set and defined your core values, you can give

thought to goals that align with these and eliminate any conflicts that

currently exist in your life (or avoid future conflicts).

This exercise builds harmony and clarity in your daily activities and

creates a sense of direction.

Step 2: Eliminate

Limiting BeliefsWhen you do what you fear most, then you can do anything.

~Stephen Richards

In the next few steps, we will begin to get clear about what we want

to accomplish, and set some goals that will help get us there.

However, before we begin doing so, we need to confront our limiting

beliefs.

When you write down your dreams, identify your wants, and set

your goals, all of your fears and reasons for why you will not

accomplish any of it rush in and try to derail your new focus.

This is the result of self -limiting beliefs.

As we grow up and begin interacting with society more and more,

we are constantly bombarded with statements that eventually

Page 12: 10 Proven Steps for Taking Action

12

become ingrained in our subconscious mind, which ultimately create

the fears and beliefs that most people develop.

Statements such as: “ you are not good enough” or “ you are too

young”, “ you are too old ”, “ you cannot afford it ”, and many others.

As a result, whenever you are faced with a new experience or a

challenge that will knock you out of your comfort zone, your

limiting beliefs manifest with the words “ I’m not good enough for

that ” or “ I’m too old to go back to school” or “ It’s too late for me to

start a business”.

You may believe and even feel that these are true, but in most

instances, they are the result of fear and uncertainty in the face of

what you are trying to accomplish.

For example, let’s say one of your goals is to travel to the Galapagos

Islands. You then begin searching for travel packages that will fulfillyour goal. However, if your finances are limited, your belief system

may take over when you start exploring your options…

It’s too expensive, we could never go there. The trip is too

long.

This would be the same with any other situation or goal – starting a

business, running a marathon, seeking love. Instead of finding a

solution to overcome a challenge, you revert to a limiting belief way

of thinking. If you do not take control and get rid of your limiting

beliefs, those beliefs become your reality.

13

Turn It Around

To get rid of these limiting beliefs, one must reverse the trend and

continuously reaffirm the opposite of those beliefs.

Recognize the artificial thought and realize that thinking it will hold

you back from achieving a goal. Instead of “I’m not good enough”,

your thought is now “I can absolutely get that done, and here is how

 I plan to do it”.

Do this with every approach, every situation, and every aspect of

your life. When you get in the habit of positive thinking, you

become more action oriented, self confident and more determine to

accomplish your goals.

Take Action:

What fears or limiting beliefs are holding you back? Write them

down below and identify the actions you have not taken because of

these fears and limiting beliefs. Finally, confront these by taking

deliberate action immediately.

Step 3: Get Clear

About What YouWant Design your life, and then go live it. ~Felix Mack

What do you desire out of life? What are your intensely desired dreams and aspirations?

If you had absolutely no limitations, what would you like to achieve?

Get clear about what you want

This may be a challenge for some, as we tend to think mostly about

our current circumstances rather than what we want to bring to

reality. But having dreams and aspirations allow you to live life by

design instead of coasting along, wondering why things are not

happening for you.

Page 15: 10 Proven Steps for Taking Action

15

Knowing what you really want helps you develop the specific laser

focus you need to make sound decisions and take the right actions in

your life.

The relationships in your life may be a point of hesitation when

thinking about your dreams and desires. You may, for instance, be

worried about your family and friends when you think about your

dreams and aspirations. But the fact is this is not about them.

This is about you and what you want to accomplish.

Just as everyone else will have their own dreams and desires, you

must not let others stop you from having a strong desire to

accomplish something. Not to say that they are not an important part

of your life. In fact, in some cases, your dreams may even include

them – which should eliminate this worry entirely.

These “wants” lay the foundation for specific goals and objectives

we will set in the next step. Think about your dreams as big life

goals. You will then break these down and create more manageable

tasks, activities or short-term goals that will help you make progress

towards achieving your dreams.

What lifelong dreams do you really want to accomplish?

Write your top 10 below in order of priority. For example, one of my

lifelong dreams is to build a school in Panama that teaches English to

small kids. Another one is to visit exotic places such as Bora Bora

Before we move on, I should mention that you should revisit your

dreams list on a regular basis. Keep it somewhere in front of you,

Step 4: Create

SMART GoalsYou are never too old to set another goal or to dream a new dream.

~C.S. Lewis

You’ve likely heard of the SMART strategy. That is, creating goals

that are Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic and Timely.

Using this approach helps you create goals that are effective and

eliminates vague goals that will be ignored by your subconscious

mind.

Create SMART goals

Getting into the habit of setting SMART goals greatly increases

your probability of achieving them. This is because your mind is

much more effective at following specific instructions than vague

statements. Here is a basic example:

Goal A: I want to visit an exotic place.

Page 19: 10 Proven Steps for Taking Action

19

Goal B: Visit the Galapagos Islands in February 2015.

With goal A, your mind has no idea where you want to go or when,

so no priority or attention will be given to this goal. In essence, it is

simply a wish.

On the other hand, with goal B, your mind is clear about what needs

to be done. Not only will you take definitive action towards

accomplishing goal B, but also - Subconsciously, you will attract the

people and circumstances that will help you achieve that goal. For

example, you will become more attentive to travel deals for yourdestination and even attract the finances required to get you there.

We can get even more specific with this goal, by detailing everything

about our trip – such as who else will be traveling, the reasons for the

trip, and the specific things you will do on the trip.

Let’s take a look at the components of SMART goals:

Specific: To be specific, your goal should answer who, what, when,

where, and why you want to get it done.

Measurable: For some goals, it’s as simple as marking them

complete. For others (for instance, weight loss goals), there should

be milestones and targets that you can use to measure progress

towards achievement.

Attainable: You can attain just about any goal you set your mind to.

However, you should have a clearly defined path that will lead you

towards that achievement.

20

Realistic: You should be willing and able to put in the effort towards

the achievement of your goal. Otherwise, the goal is not realistic and

it is just a wish. For example, “fly to the moon” may be your goal,

but if you are not willing and able to put in the effort to get to the

moon, then it is not realistic.

Timely: “Someday” or “sometime” does not lead to taking action.

Your goal should have a time frame attached to it so there is a sense

of certainty in achievement.

Take Action:Take a look at your dreams and aspirations from the previous step.

Revise those lifelong goals into more detailed goals that follow the

SMART strategy.

Step 5: Short-

Term and Long-Term Goals If you want to live a happy life, tie it to a goal, not to people or things

~Albert Einstein

In the previous step, you wrote some SMART goals and got veryspecific about what you want to accomplish. Now, let’s make a

distinction between goals that will take us some time to accomplish

vs. goals that we can complete almost immediately.

Take Action:

Take a look at your list from the previous step and write down your

long-term goals on the following list; these will be accomplished a

year or more from now.

22

Now, let’s take this list – along with the list on the previous step –

and outline some goals and objectives that we can accomplish right

now, or not too long from now. These will become our short-term

goals.

Note that these goals should absolutely support or be in alignment

with your long term goals. If your short term objectives are not

congruent with your long term goals, then you will need to modify

your long term goals so that they are congruent.

For example, if your long term goals include traveling to the

Galapagos Islands, there should be a short term goal financial goal

that directly aligns with that goal. If you have a long term goal to

establish a career in a specific field, then you should have a specific

educational short-term goal that supports that vision.

Step 6: Take

Decisive Action Action is the foundational key to all success. ~Pablo Picasso

It is time to take action. This is what separates those who accomplish

their goals vs. those who only wish they could accomplish their

goals.

Successful people take action – consistently. It is a habit. They

remain in motion, continuously moving toward their goals and

adjusting to the consequences (positive or negative) brought about by

their actions.

It is a process that begins with defining your values, creating specific

goals and activities that will bring you closer to those goals, and then

launching yourself into motion. Because quite simply, if you do

not get into action, nothing will happen – nothing will change – and

your goals will not be accomplished.

Page 25: 10 Proven Steps for Taking Action

25

Here are 3 specific tips that will help increase your action habit:

Put it on paper. At the beginning of the week (or day, or

month – whatever works for you), write down what needs to

get done. Use a checklist, to-do list, or any-list. When you’re

done with a specific task, don’t slow down. Move on to the

next one.

Anytime you can offload things you need to remember from

your head onto paper (or your computer), the more you set

yourself up for taking action.

Your brain hates stress, and having to remember all the details

related to preparing your taxes, or everything you need to

schedule, reserve, and buy for a vacation just weighs you

down.

Putting things on paper helps you get rid of a lot of this stress

because you reduce any worry about what and when

something needs to be done.

For any process or sequence of actions you perform on a

regular basis, take a little time to create a checklist for it and

use it as needed. Not only will it save you time and energy in

the long-run, but the act of creating a checklist will launch you

into action mode to get the items on your checklist done.

26

Eliminate insignificant tasks. Concentrate and work on

actions that will move you closer to accomplishing tasks and

major goals. Get rid of actions and habits that move you away

from your goals, such as watching too much television or

reading books that do not enlighten your mind.

In step 8, we will go over prioritizing your actions so you are

working on the most important tasks that bring you closer and

closer to accomplishing your goals. Understand that this is an

important step to taking action, because working on mundane

tasks or having habits that cause inefficiency will cause you to

fall short of your goals.

Getting rid of insignificant tasks helps create a void in your

time. When you create a void, you have to fill it with

something else. It is up to you to fill that time with actions that

will bring about positive results or actions that will bring about

negative or no results.

Now that you understand what your goals and values are, you

can fill that void with actions that will bring positive results

and get you closer to those goals.

Build a routine. Do things with some sort of regularity and

establish a Daily Mode of Operation (DMO). When you do

take positive action consistently, you begin to build the habits

required to succeed in anything you set out to do. This is the

difference between getting closer or further from your goals.

Implementing a schedule is an action you can take to help

build a routine. For example, if going to the gym is part of

your goals, do it at the same time each day you decide to go.

When you do this consistently enough, you will get to a point

where going to the gym at the same time, on the same days,

becomes a habit.

Remember that inaction only robs you of the progress and results

you are looking for in any area of your life. Follow these 3 simple

tips and get in the habit of taking action and getting things done.

Take Action:

your time, and as a consequence keeping you from taking action.

Step 7: Getting

OrganizedOrganization isn't about perfection; it's about efficiency,

reducing stress and clutter, saving time and money and improving your

overall quality of life. ~Christina Scalise

Just like a choppy satellite TV reception, our minds sometimes

experience the ‘can’t tune in’ syndrome. Better yet, we sometimes

want to ‘tune in’ to several different channels at the same time…

And it’s distracting, isn’t it?

The ability to get organized increases your focus, your determination

to get things done, and ultimately your productivity. So if you want

to be more efficient, and accomplish your goals without suffering too

much stress, it is critical that you stay organized.

Page 29: 10 Proven Steps for Taking Action

29

While there are many ways to implement organization into your life,

the key is to pick a system and stick to it. A simple method to getting

organized is using checklists, as I mentioned in the previous step.

Checklists help you get rid of stress by acting like a ‘mini-blueprint’

you can easily follow anytime you need it, without the worry that

you’re forgetting something important. But another significant aspect

of checklists is that they help you get organized.

Another system to utilize in conjunction with checklists is the 4D-

System. As you organize the tasks and actions that you need tocomplete, determine if you can DO it now, Delegate it, Delay it, or

Delete it.

If you can do it immediately, get it done instead of letting it linger. If

you can have someone else do the task, get rid of the burden and

delegate the task to someone that can get it done so you do not have

to worry about it. If you need to do it at a later time, add it to your to-

do list with a specific deadline and priority. And finally, if the task

has no impact whatsoever on your overall goals and objectives, get

rid of it.

Making an immediate decision about the tasks that you need to

complete un-clutters the mind, helps eliminate stress and increases

clarity.

Another important aspect of getting organized is clearing your

physical space and eliminating distractions. Take a look at those

areas where you spend most of your time – are they free of clutter

Page 30: 10 Proven Steps for Taking Action

Step 8: Focus on

Top PrioritiesThings which matter most must never be at the mercy of things which

matter least . ~ Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

Not everything in your life can be a priority. Day to day, many

important things will compete for attention, but there are not enough

hours in anyone’s day to give attention to everything that could

potentially be a priority.

Determining your basic priorities is a key exercise in moving toward

more efficient use of your time. Your basic priorities provide a

means for making time choices, helping you decide where it is

important to invest yourself and where you are able to let go.

Prioritization is a critical success factor for getting things done.

When you prioritize your actions and focus on those activities that

bring you closer to a goal first, you help eliminate procrastination

and idleness.

A popular prioritization system is the Time Management Matrix

described in the book “First Things First” by Steven Covey and

Rebecca Merrill. I illustrate this matrix on the next page…

Utilizing this matrix, you will classify important vs. non-important

tasks on one axis and urgent vs. not-urgent on the other axis.

The first quadrant will contain tasks that need our immediate

attention.

Tasks in quadrant #2 do not need immediate attention but they

are our most important tasks.

Quadrant #3 includes tasks that are not important, but have

become urgent because of lack of time or planning.

Tasks in quadrant #4 have no impact on your overall

objectives or may not need to be done at all. We should strive

to eliminate these tasks.

Mr. Covey suggests that, to achieve the highest efficiency, we should

focus our time on non-urgent but important activities (quadrant #2).

These important activities should be planned so that you are

continuously working on activities that move you closer to your

goals and objectives.

Take Action:

Identify your most important, but not urgent tasks on the list below.

To increase your effectiveness, use the Time Management Matrix

model to place your activities in each quadrant and identify your top

priorities.

Step 9: Stay

FocusedThe key to success is to focus our conscious mind on things we desire not

things we fear. ~Brian Tracy

Focus is a critical trait that must be developed in order to accomplish

your goals and objectives. With so many distractions, including

technology and social media constantly intruding our lives, it is very

easy to get sidetracked and take action on things that have absolutely

no impact on how much closer you get to your goals.

Following the steps on this report will help keep you focused on the

right activities to achieve your goals. Still, sometimes it’s not easy to

get rid of distractions and maintain constant focus. When you do

catch yourself losing focus, it is important to become aware of it and

immediately regain it. Otherwise, you risk losing momentum and

abandoning everything you are working towards.

To take your focus level up a notch, here are 4 additional tips to

consider:

1. Change Your Environment

This means eliminating the items and objects that can cause

distraction when you are working towards accomplishing a task. This

may include televising, music and even your mobile phone.

But changing your environment also means getting away from

circumstances that do not align with your objectives. For example, if

you have a weight loss goal, staying away from fast food restaurants

(an environment conflicting with your goal) will be a key component

of keeping your focus.

2. Realize it’s a Journey

Keep in mind that overnight results are almost always an unrealistic

expectation. The goals you outlined in steps 3 and 4 will most likely

take some time to accomplish, would you agree? Realize that this is a

journey and that consistent daily action is what it will take to bring

those goals to reality.

3. Be Mindful of your Associations

Surround yourself with other people that either have similar interests,

or that are goal oriented in general. Avoid associating with negative

people that will not only drain your energy, but also cause you to

lose focus and get distracted away from your goals.

4. Keep Track

A good way to build focus is by keeping track of your actions. You

can do this by using a journal or diary to document your progress. In

fact, building a journaling habit can increase your perseverance, as

you get to see your progress on a daily basis.

Implementing these four tips will go a long way to helping you build

sharp laser focus. You also build your confidence, maximize your

potential and increase your overall productivity.

Take Action:

Stay focused – Write down five specific actions you will take,

starting today, to maintain your focus.

2.  _____________________________________________________

3.  _____________________________________________________4.  _____________________________________________________

Step 10: Staying

Motivated Motivation is the fuel, necessary to keep the human engine running.

~Zig Ziglar

What drives you?

What keeps you going?

What is your motivation?

Having an intense desire to achieve a dream or simply accomplish a

small goal… This is the driving force that keeps us moving when the

roads get bumpy.

At times, that intense desire is enough to ignite your determinationand launch you into action every-single-day. Other times, we need to

give ourselves a good ol’ kick in the ass to get going or find more

inspiration to take action.

Page 38: 10 Proven Steps for Taking Action

38

But where do you find that inspiration to keep moving?

The answer lies in the REASON why you want to accomplish your

dreams. What is the underlying basis for the goals you wrote on

STEP 3?

The more intense and emotional the reason (the WHY), the more

motivation you will find within yourself to take consistent action and

persist when challenges arise.

When your why is fuzzy or doesn’t exist, your motivation suffers

and progress is sluggish.

As an example, let’s say your goal is to start a business that generates

100k/yr in income. Ask yourself, why and have a clear/specific

answer.

It could be: Because you want to ensure a college education for your

kids and spend more time with the family, instead of working for

someone else 40+ hours a week. Or, it could be that you want to be

able to travel the world. Whatever it is, be sure you know the

underlying reason you want to accomplish a goal.

39

Take Action:

Why are you pursuing the goals that you want to accomplish? Take a

look at your “wants” from STEP 2. Write down “why” you want to

accomplish those goals.

1.  _____________________________________________________

2.  _____________________________________________________

3.  _____________________________________________________

4.  _____________________________________________________

5.  _____________________________________________________

6.  _____________________________________________________7.  _____________________________________________________

8.  _____________________________________________________

9.  _____________________________________________________

10. _____________________________________________________

Take it a step further:

Re-read your list of WHY’s; if they are not emotional or

inspirational enough then re-evaluate the reason for your ‘wants’. It

should not be as simple as “because I want to do it”. Find the

motivational bond between the reason and your desired goal.

Wrapping upI have no idea where you stand right now in your journey. However,

understand this…

NONE of the steps on this report will work for you unless you

actually put them into practice by taking ACTION.

manner, then nothing will change.

It is my hope I’ve given you some ideas for influencing change in

your life and accomplishing your goals.

If you’re seeking results, and significant progress towards achieving

your goals, commit yourself to begin today – by implementing these

steps, even if you choose to only follow one of them.

While I would love nothing more than for you to achieve your goals

because you took decisive action after reading this report…

The choice is yours.
