General News

Welcome to Term 2! It’s great to see everyone back at school again. We hope you had a wonderful holiday. Congratulations to Riley who celebrated his birthday during the holiday break.Even though we’ve only been here for four days this week, it has been a busy time filled with lots of activities. We really enjoyed our Chapel program on Wednesday. Pastor Jack was our speaker and he told us a great story. We also had Mr Bill and Mr Ron come and present special medallions to us at the beginning of Chapel. The medallions are to commemorate a centenary of landings at Galipoli. We plan to take good care of these special reminders of what others have done for our country. We have begun to study a new book in English and we are having lots of fun finding out all about the adventures of a girl called Anne. We have been working really hard to learn how to write a persuasive text in Writing and we are looking forward to sharing our work with others. Well done everyone for a fantastic effort in our spelling test! We are trying really hard to fulfil our homework requirements for the new term. We need to remember to complete our new Reading Record each night. We are going to try really hard to read lots of books and record our efforts in our new Reading Record Booklets. A great start to the term, everyone!

ChapelWe wish to extend an invitation to our parents to attend our weekly Chapel programs. We would just love you to join us for this special time. Hope to see you there!

FeesWith just 4 weeks left of term we are well and truly on the countdown to the end of year. A last push to have your fee debt cleared by the end of year would be appreciated.

Kindy OrientationOur Kindy Orientation program begins next week with a visit to the Kindy classroom. Miss Dobson is looking forward to having special visitors in her room! Mums and dads are invited to attend our Kindy Orientation evening for parents on 30 November at 7 pm.

PlaygroundPlease note that students who are picked up from school after classes must not play on the play equipment or in the playground at this time. Students are required to stay with their parents as they are leaving to go home. This is because a teacher does not supervise the playground after school. If students arrive at school before 8:30 am then they are required to be under the supervision of their parents and they are not permitted to play on the play equipment or in the playground until a teacher goes on duty. Thank you so much for your cooperation with this safety matter! Student Re-Enrolment Form 2018Last term we sent home the 2018 Re-Enrolment forms. These are essential for helping us with our planning. Please return the completed forms if you have not done so already. Thank you.

Swimming LessonsThis term’s swimming lessons are to take place from 20 to 24 of November. Please refer to the letter that was sent home for further information about our swimming program.

Principal’s MessageI want to just reflect on someone I have worked with for a number of years in two different Conferences and in two different capacities. I initially got to work with Brett as my church pastor when I was a teacher at Tweed Valley College and he was the pastor at Murwillumbah Church.

He would come in each week to school, attend chapel, even if he was not taking it, play basketball with the students at recess and lunch time and was simply there as an interested nurturer of personal faith. He was loved by the students because he was real and approachable.

I remember an incredibly moving moment as a 14 year old student, battling the last stages of leukemia was baptized. Brett gave him confidence and courage to look ahead to the Resurrection Morning. The young man passed away only three months later.

He became my Conference President in North Australia while we were at Carlisle Adventist Christian College in Mackay. Again he was authentic and real. He had worked for many years with horses. Stock whips were natural in his left hand. His down to earth approach, his humility and his passion for God all shone through.

At camp time, he was out working as hard or harder than anyone else on the team. Tents were put up, duties were performed and he led by example in all of that. Sunday of Camp demolition he was out there with the rest of us, hard at work.

Our value for this week is Humility. I want to give tribute to Brett Townend, now the president of South Queensland Conference, the biggest Conference in Australia, but a person who remains very much feet on the ground. His philosophy is that he is here to serve and share God. That to me is true humility. A great example. It is worth thinking what people might say about us? Could we be considered to be in that mould?

Pre-Kindy

Kindy

This week has been filled with plenty of activities. We had lots of fun on Tuesday when we got to pose for some school pictures. It was hard to concentrate on work when there was someone with a camera in the classroom, but we managed.

On Wednesday we made hot chips from the first harvest of potatoes. Along with the Pre-Kindy students, we washed, peeled, cut and oiled enough chips for the whole school! Although it was tricky to peel the potatoes and hard to cut them with plastic knives we persevered and did an amazing job. It was so cool to get to make something out of the vegies that we have grown ourselves and they were so yummy!

On Thursday we got to make jelly. We learnt that a procedure is a set of steps and instructions about how to make something. After following the procedure on the box and putting the jelly in the fridge to set, it was time to write the procedure for ourselves. We also found out that there was some maths involved in making the jelly. We had to count how many cups of water we needed, we measured half and whole cups and we had to share the liquid equally. Then we had to practice patience since we had to wait until Friday to be able to eat it! It was a long wait, but worth it in the end.

Our Pre-Kindy world trip is underway with our first flight to China. Euan presented the information he had learned about China and he had put together a poster to show us all. We even got to eat some spring rolls with chopsticks! We each have little passports, and we will be collecting immigration stickers for each of the countries we have visited.

On Wednesday we washed, chopped and turned our harvested potatoes into hot chips! We worked with the Kindy children, Miss Dobson and Mrs van Duinen while Mrs Thompson was telling the Avondale College students all about our TCN program. Everyone loved the hot chips. We shared them with the whole school at lunch time.

In Maths time we have been learning to add. We are doing really well!

Next week we have our Letterland Party on Wednesday. Remember to come dressed up in your Letterland costume, and to bring some food for our shared lunch. Your food needs to begin with your Letterland character’s sound. We will have an early lunch that day, at 11:50 am.

Years 1 & 2

Pre-Kindy C lass News

Years 3-6

We have had exciting things happen at school this week. On Tuesday we had our photos taken for school promotion. We also had drone footage taken of our class having fun on the oval. Tyler was lucky enough to be chosen to have a special turn at flying the drone too!

Years 1 and 2 had a great time in the garden this week, with some special visitors from Avondale College. Students were able to get their hands dirty digging and they also participated in some outdoor learning. We practiced asking questions that would help us identify objects we found around the garden.

In Science we observed the properties of cooked spaghetti and used some to create funny pictures that recorded words that described the cooked spaghetti. By contrast, we also observed the properties of uncooked spaghetti and used it to make some strong towers.

In Maths we have been learning how to tell the time on analog and digit clocks and we have also been learning maths facts about time.

In Health we learned about being sun smart. Make sure you ask your child what slip, slop, slap, seek and slide mean. We also enjoyed making a class mural about being sun smart while having fun in the sun. We have been busy working on assessments and were able to catch up on painting our clay work.

Our object lesson for worship this week was filled with “wow’s” and “how did you do that?” Our talk illustrated how Jesus removes sin from our lives and washes us clean when we confess our sin. 1 John 1:9 says If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.

It has been another busy week in the Years 3-6 classroom! On Tuesday we had lots of photos taken of some of the wonderful things we get to do at school including STEM, TCN and more. We were very proud to show the photographer what we do here at Toronto Campus and we can’t wait to see the photos!

We had lots of special visitors at our school on Wednesday. Education students from Avondale College and their lecturer, Mrs Bev Christian, came to our classroom to see our TCN program. Mrs Thompson spoke to them for a while and then we showed them how we produce the School’s news. It was great fun!

Lots of imagination went into creating our TCN Awards Night invitations. Congratulations to everyone for an outstanding job! Please mark this special date in your calendar so that you can join us for this event. We look forward to seeing you on 26 November at 7 pm.

Our lunch on Wednesday was extra special as we had some hot chips the little people in our school made for us. They did such a good job and we really enjoyed the chips! The chips were made from potatoes that came from our garden here at school and they sure tasted amazing. Thank you Pre-Kindy and Kindy! A big thank you also to Pre-Kindy to Year 2 for sharing some other garden produce with us this week. The carrots you gave us were so yummy!

We need to remember to keep working hard on our projects. Mrs Ryan needs them to be completed and brought in to school next week.

Well done and have a great weekend Years 3-6!
