Maybe the happiest place in a hospital or medical center is the Maternity Unit. That’s cer-tainly the case at Flower Hospital, where morethan 1200 babies are welcomed into the world

each year. Those babies are born in one of 12(soon to be 13) state-of-the-art Labor-Delivery-Recovery-Post Partum rooms (LDRP) wheremoms stay from the time of their admission untilthe bigger family is ready to go home. Expectantdads, grandparents, and eager siblings can sleepin the rooms, watch TV, and even cook micro-wave meals or snacks while waiting for the

arrival of the newest member of their family. After the delivery, the homey atmosphere is acomfortable place for everyone to get to know

baby, and a perfect spot for mom to work withnurses and other professionals as she gets toknow her baby’s schedule and mannerisms.

Elaine Ozarzak, the Administrative Director

of the Maternity Unit, explains that the LDRProoms serve several purposes. “All the neces-sary technical equipment is in the rooms, readyto go when needed. Until then, the rooms arefamily-friendly places, where mom can visitwith family members and still be close to careif she needs it. After the baby is born, therooms are a great place for any education mom

needs—about breastfeeding, bathing the baby, whatever. The rooms are spacious and inviting, too, so most babies spend all their time in theroom with their moms. There is a nursery for

babies who moms might want some nap timealone, and boys who undergo circumcisionsleave for that procedure, but are returned to their moms.”

The parents who have delivered their babiesat Flower Hospital in recent years report veryhigh satisfaction—in the 90th percentile. Mrs.Orarzak credits the nurses in the unit for thehappy patients, calling those staff members “the

best nurses ever.” She also speaks proudly of the unit’s special features, including the full-time (24/7 for 365 days/year) availability of anobstetrician and an anesthesiologist.

Six nurse midwives also deliver babies, assisted by student nurses and residents fromthe Flower Family Practice. The unit staff workswith the staff at Toledo Children’s Hospital if there are complications with a delivery or if anewborn needs intensive care treatment. “Thatis a great relationship that allows us to offer the best care to our moms and babies,” Mrs.Ozarzak explains.

Rooms in the Maternity Unit are set up for labor, delivery, recovery, andpost-partum care. A sleeper couch, TV, and microwave make the room comfort-able for family members who want to stay close to mom and baby.

Behind the cupboard doors in the LDRP units are all the machines and technol-

ogy needed for childbirth and aftercare.

Cancer. It is a scary word, evenfor those of us who have never had toface the diagnosis. People fear the side

effects of treatment, the loss of control, the uncertainty of the future, the possi-bility of surgery, and, even death.

Those feelings are familiar to the staff at the Hickman Cancer Center at Flower Hospital, where a team of profession-als is in place to treat patients. AnnKujawa, the Administrative Director of the ProMedica Cancer Institute at theCenter, explains that patient comfort andcare are top priorities for the staff.

“We are the largest providers of cancer care in this area. But, we arealways looking at what we need to doto enhance the care of our patients. Weare passionate about making the patientscomfortable as they undergo treatmentfor nearly all types of cancer.”

Mrs. Kujawa notes that the Center treats nearly 800 new radiation patientseach year, and as many as an additional200 medical oncology (chemotherapypatients). Each of those patients hasaccess to the care and concern of thatteam of professionals, including a socialworker, a dietician, and a clinical phar-macist.

“There is also a healing care compo-nent,” she explains, “that helps patientswith relaxing and stress management. We have a massage therapist availablefor patients approximately 8 hours per week. Relaxation therapies such asguided imagery are available as part of the healing care program. All members

of the team work to meet the concerns of the patients. Since the patients visit us asoutpatients and then go home, they oftenneed information about between-treat-ment care, such as which foods they cantolerate, when to take which meds, howto care for incisions, etc. That’s wherethe team members can be so valuable.”

An important part of the Center’sworks is the research component.Through af liation with the ToledoClinical Oncology Program and the

National Cancer Institute, the ProMedicaCenter offers patients an opportunity tobe part of clinical trials. These are stan-dard and approved therapies that followspeci c protocols.

Mrs. Kujawa says, “These trials arestate-of-the-art therapy for our patients, who are never, ever treated as ‘guin-ea pigs.’ Clinical trials are offered topatients if there is a trial available for

their speci c diagnosis. In many cases,

they are a very real and attractive option. And their being part of the researchmeans that they are contributing to their own treatment and, possibly, to thetreatment of others. Many nd that com -forting or reassuring, a way to have a bitof control in a dif cult situation.”

The Cancer Center has continued togrow since it opened in 1978. Modernequipment is in place, making theCenter comparable to many larger aca-demic centers. Their relationship with

other ProMedica hospitals and centers, including Toledo Children’s Hospital, means that the staff is able to offer treat-ment for even the youngest patients.A special relationship with a national

partner, Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute in Detroit, MI, allows refer-ral for treatment for patients who areeligible for a Bone Marrow Transplant,as that is not available in this area, andother cancers, such as a Base of Skulltumor, that aren’t seen frequently atthe Center in Sylvania. Those who aretreated in Sylvania can use one of 19treatment chairs in rooms that overlook a garden, a little touch that offers a bit of serenity in a dif cult situation.

Patients who have nished their course of treatment are encouraged andhelped to plan ahead. Mrs. Kujawadescribes the post-treatment time periodas a challenge, as patients return to a

“normal” life without time spent everyday receiving treatment or recoveringfrom it. The Center offers all the nec-

essary support services, including thehealing care, psychological assistance,follow-up treatment, and services of anurse practitioner. “We want to have asolid follow-up plan for our patients.”

The Center offers a genetic testing program for patients with a family histo-ry of cancer. A team that has completededucation and training in cancer geneticsmeets with a patient and prepares a fam-ily “pedigree” to assess possible mul-tiple risk factors. With the help of theteam, the patient and family may decideon certain prophylactic measures andmore surveillance of family members. The advance information is especiallyimportant in cancers like breast cancer,

10% of which have agenetic component.

While Mrs.Kujawa reportsthat, “Cancer is nota death sentence

anymore. Somekinds of cancer arevery treatable andmanageable,” sheacknowledges thatthere are some can-cers that cannot betreated. The mis-sion of the Center in those cases is tomake the patient’s

nal days “as goodas they can be” and“make the dyingcomfortable.”

Staff mem- bers suggest thatfamilies consider the services of ProMedica Hospice. The 12-bed Ebeid

Hospice on the Flower Hospital cam- pus offers a peaceful environment, with private rooms with patios that overlook a pond, and a dedicated staff to help the

patient and the family. There is also theoption of receiving the same comfortinghospice care in the patient’s own home.Bereavement counselors keep in touchwith families for 13 months after the

patient’s death, a service many survivorsnd especially helpful and comforting.

“We call our services ‘High Tech andHigh Touch,” Mrs. Kujawa explains.“High tech refers to the high level of

technology and state of the art treat-ments that we provide. High touchrefers to the high level of care, compas-sion and support that we give to our

patients.”
