10 PHALABORWA HERALD Friday July 8, 2016 COMMUNITY Transport Youth Day celebrated The Department of Roads, Safety and Transport held a district Youth Day celebration at Foskor Community Centre last Thursday. Ba-Phalaborwa Municipality Chief Whip, Lucky Mohlala, delivered a key note address to traffic officers dressed in school uniforms. “I was also a young person at one stage. I wasn’t born a Chief Whip nor a teacher, neither was I born a politician. These things are possible for all, as the pastor has already alluded. Today, we have gathered here during this important month in the history of the country and all young people who participated in the day’s activities. Young people at the time took a conscious decision to be part of the struggle for freedom in South Africa and this was as a result of the decision that was taken by then government of the National Party which was practising a system of governance called Apartheid,” Mohlala explained. He said this system divided the people of South Africa into four racial groups, namely; Blacks, Whites, Indians and Coloureds. “This system regarded Whites as the supreme race above all these others races. Blacks and Africans in particular, lost everything in the country of their forefathers because of this system of Apartheid. In 1953, that government passed an Act called ‘Bantu Education Act’, which defined the type of education which Africans should receive or be taught in,” he added. The Chief Whip further said this system was designed in a manner that its aim was to assist or enable the black man to serve the white man better. “As a result of this Bantu Education Act, the then Apartheid government took a decision that alongside English as a medium of instruction, Afrikaans should also serve as a medium of instruction for Bantu schools. This meant that we as blacks were supposed to lose our identity,” Mohlala reiterated. He said that it was as a result of that decision by the Apartheid government to introduce Afrikaans as a medium of instruction, that students in Soweto said: “No we can’t allow this thing!”. “They organised themselves and agreed that on 16 June 1976 they were going to convene a peaceful march. They said that they were going to say to Verwoerd and his people, that they were not ready as African children to be taught in Afrikaans and lose their identity. When the then government heard that students were going to protest, police were used to try and stop this protest,” he said. The Chief Whip inquired what important was to the young people of today, how they would like to be remembered? “That is the question we need to ask ourselves. We know that there were once young people courageous and intelligent by names of Hector Peterson, Tsietsi Mashinini and Moses Makhubo whose whereabouts even today are unknown because of the incidents of 1976. We don’t know if Makhubo is still alive or dead,” Mohlala emphasised. Mohlala said the class of 1976 opened the doors for free education in our country. “It is regrettable to see young people in school uniform roaming the streets at 10:00,” he said. “Where is this country going to? Education is the pre-condition of development. I was inspired by Doctor Pastor S Kgatla who, at his young age has a doctorate in theology. This isn’t witchcraft, it is very real. Very soon we might meet him again as a Professor,” he said. Borrowing from Tata Madiba, Mohlala said it is through education that a child of a peasant (farm worker) can make his or her parents proud and break the cycle of poverty in the family. Education for a woman can be her permanent partner and education will never divorce her. With education a person could become independent. “If you run away from school you could become trapped in bad relationships and may get nothing but pain and suffering out of such relationships. Today’s theme is ‘Youth Moving South Africa Forward’. I don’t think we can move South Africa forward by going to shebeens during school hours or even after school, let alone engaging in unprotected sex which might lead to getting infected with HIV/AIDS and still running to government demanding ARV's. I think our government meant to assist the poorest of the poor with social grants, instead of irresponsible teenagers and young adults,” Mohlala added. He said, leading to the fourth local government elections on August 3 that research has shown that young people do not seem to be showing keen interest in exercising their right to vote, despite this hard-earned right. Dr Kgatla delivered a financial motivational talk to traffic officers, aimed at investing in assets to create wealth for their children.
