IIT, Madras ICT Project on Text Transcription of Technical Video Lectures and Creation of Video Searchable Index, Metadata and Online Quzzes

Rs.1.575 crore

1. The project proposed o produce transcript files for all video lectures produced in NPTEL Phase I in phased manner – about 1000 files every six months. So far about 4376 lectures have been transcribed through a manual transcription process and having data on speech (in English) with sufficient variation in pronunciation by Indian English speakers for training machines for automatic speech-to-text transcription with an improved accuracy about 60 per cent or so. The project proposes to generate enough data when completed, so that a large number of NPTEL Phase-II video lectures can be text transcribed using automatic means. 2. Every transcribed lecture is being time coded and indexed using technologies available on the net and standard text books. This will enable the user to point to a particular video segment through a single or a rapid keyword based search on all the 4600 or so hours of recorded material. When completed, this will also be the first time in technical education all over the world that such facilities and standard video based metadata are available on the internet for the entire science and engineering curriculum. 3. The availability of complete text material for technology courses will enable the lectures to be subtitled in English, Hindi and other languages where sufficient technical vocabulary exists. This will help non-native English speakers and students in rural colleges throughout India to learn the concept through a partial or complete translation of the spoken content in their first language. 4.Every course with video lectures will be accompanied by quizzes online to facilitate the reader to understand the material in a focused manner. Also such quizzes can provided the basis for future university examinations adopting NPTEL contents.

2 years.

(C)Status of the Project as on date 31.8.20111. Accurately transcribe and certify text files with video images of all lectures from 4600 hours of video lectures. Approximately 92,000 print pages (A4) will be made available for online access. The text files will be certified by the faculty who developed the video courses. This will enable viewers to browse through authenticated text contents of 4,600 hours of engineering lessons in video and search for specific topics with the help of powerful search engines. Transcription of more than 4376 hours of video lectures has been completed Uploading on website – On going.2. (a)Deliverables from IIT Bombay1. Live transmission, recording and course generation. In addition to making the course content from IIT available, this makes available also the methodology: punctuality, delivering all lectures, rigour of arguments, assignments, asking questions, discussions, etc.2. Spoken tutorials: This refers to recording a computer session and converting into audio, video tutorial. To dub the audio into various Indian languages. Make these suitable for self learning.3. Conduct workshops through spoken tutorials. As domain experts are not required for conducting these, one can do many workshops using the spoken tutorials.4. Conduct 12 teacher training programmes, each of which will train 1,000 teachers at a time. Do this through A-VIEW.

Deliverables from Amrita University1. A set of modules to extend the capabilities of A-VIEW.2. Teacher node capability.3. A-VIEW deployment for student nodes.4. Supporting institutions.

Deliverables from DEI1. Synchronous delivery of courses.2. Content generation for courses in CS/Engineering using chalk and board kind of interactive classroom recordings or video conferenced recordings with other premier institutions.3. Video-on-demand system.4. Course e-Books for courses in CS/Engineering. This is to make available the edited version of the course notes in a neatly formatted electronic form and if possible, published form at very low cost.

(b)•The mobile e-learning terminals will deliver the e-contents developed under the Mission from the servers to be set-up under the Mission. Therefore, these are excluded from the scope of the present proposal. To develop a prototype of mobile e-learning terminal, comprising a van, VSAT equipment and computer/network/multimedia equipment suitable for use in remote areas where no other reliable mode of data connectivity is available. •To purchase and equip vans based on the above prototype and deploy them in the remote aGreas to be selected for the pilot.•To cater to the need of e-learning of the college students in these remote areas through a network of major institutions/ universities, who will control, operate and maintain them in their respective states.

IIT Kanpur● The multi-institutional architecture (Brihaspati-3) is released on http://sourceforge.net/ projects/brihaspati and http://brihsvn.iitk.ernet.in/repos/brihaspati/trunk/brihaspati2.● One server have been started and available for providing LMS services to any institute in India at http://brihsvn.iitk.ernet.in:8080/brihaspati/servlet/brihaspati● Second mirror server is currently being tested. Thus we will have 1+1 protection for the services.● Currently 68 institutes have created their space on this system.● Bugzilla based bug and feature management system operational for the management of development activity.● Open-id based authentication - already operational, gmail and yahoo to be added soon.● JXTA based storage cloud in another three months, addition of servers at other institutes in this cloud to form single signon cluster.● Many new features added - secondary instructor management, institutional logo management, integeration of BrihaspatiSync - live lecture delivery system - they use same database in backend.● At many places code has been optimized - introduction of separate thread for maintainence tasks, and sending update and other kinds of emails. This has made the system response faster.● System for conducting tests and quizes have been added jointly with DEI team.● Brihaspati-4 (fully P2P system) basic design has been understood and now being documented.● Brihaspati Website - current design document is in progress. Will be designed over Spring framework.● Work to upgrade the whole system to Turbine-4 in progress.

● Code committed, but not functional. Problems in compiling the source.● Cooperation from SMVDU team needed to resolve the issues so that only functional code can be committed.Overall, there is lot of difference in commitment of different PIs. Some team find it difficult to hire. Some PIs are not committing the time as they should due to preference for other consultancy projects. Having a provision of remuneration to PIs will probably make PIs more interested and committal to project. Further most of the challenging work like, openid, cloud formation was taken up by IIT Kanpur, but due to sudden surge of academic load (doubling of teaching and five times increase in thesis supervision) had slowed down the core engineering effort. Although this has not affected any team other than IITK. Some of the teams take documentation as least preferred work. Some partners have tendency to claim work done in other projects also in this mission although it is equivalent to self plagiarism and hence unethical. Overall cultural and ethical differences among all institutional partners have been seen and pose a biggest challenge in managing and coordinating the activity at National Level. The projection is that by March 2012, the cloud and OpenID will be functional. Interfacing with UID Aadhar may not happen as it is yet to be explored. Live lecture delivery system based on P2P system will be functional. Good thing is that I expect Brihaspati-4 basic prototype to be ready for use which is more than what we expected a year back.
