Fromo Skip Matlick ~ Subject: KS-9 Groundwater Sample

On December 10. 1992. Well KS-9 was drilled to a KB depth of 699 ft and a sample of the groundwater was successfully bailed from the top of the water table. During drilling. pump pressure and mud returns were monitored to determine the water table depth. Although these parameters were not definitive. it appeared that the water table was encountered at 640 ft KB. Well KS-9 was then drilled to 699 ft and the drill pipe tripped out of the hole. A steel 12.5 gallon bailer was then run into the hole on the sand line. Eight bailer runs were made with the bailer cleaned after each run. Water samples were collected in one-liter plastic bottles previously rinsed with deionized water from runs four through eight. The water temperature was approximately 90°F. These five water samples were allowed to settle and then bottles from runs five through eight were decanted into two 500 ml bottles. These bottles were transported to Brewer Labs with instructions to filter (0.45 um) and analyze for the same parameters as the Well KS-4 groundwater sample.

Summary

PUNA GEOTHERMAL VENTURE WELL KS-9 CLEANOUT FLOW OPERATIONS REPORT

April 20, 1993

The planned cleanout flow of production well KS-9 was completed successfully on April 20, 1993. The test objectives were accomplished and the test was terminated after 3 hours and 39 minutes of steam-dominated flow. Average flow rate for this period was 126,000 lb/hr, and the average wellhead pressure was 1,910 psig. The maximum flow rate was 179, 000 lb/hr at a wellhead pressure of 1,900 psig. The well's potential is much greater, but higher rates were not needed to achieve the cleanout objective, and the rate was purposely constrained to avoid possible problems of excess H2s emissions or liquid carryover from the atmospheric separator. At least within the limited range of the cleanout flow, the well's deliverability conformed to its predicted performance, which indicates it has an excess of capacity for the 25-MW power plant.

Because of problems encountered during the February 8, 1993, flow of KS-9, more elaborate procedures for H2S abatement and personnel safety were implemented for the April 20 operation. The new abatement procedures were fully effective with respect to both personnel safety and environmental permit compliance.

Following the cleanout flow, the temporary piping was removed and the permanent production piping was connected to the wellhead. KS-9 was restarted the next day at about 1300 hrs, supplying steam to the power plant.

Background

The cleanout flow operation on April 20, 1993, constituted the completion of the aborted cleanout flow on February a, 1993. The February 8 operation consisted of a 30-minute flow period followed by a scheduled shutdown to inspect the wellhead and tighten flange bolts. Early in the 30-minute period, there was an excessive release of H2 S resulting from unexpected startup flow conditions in the piping and consequent failure of the chemical abatement to work effectively. PGV elected to postpone resumption the nominal fourhour flow on February 8 pending a review and redesign of the abatement procedures.

During the February 8 cleanout flow, NaOH solution and water were injected into the flowline upstream of the atmospheric separator, in accordance with common H2S abatement practice. This method was effective on Well KS-8 in August 1992 and worked well on KS-9 after the onset of steam-dominated flow. As with any chemical abatement, thorough mixing of the NaOH solution with the flow stream is essential for an effective reaction. The normal production of

steam in such a well flow operation provides the necessary turbulence for effective mixing and abatement. However, on February 8, steam flow from KS-9 was unexpectedly preceded by nine minutes of production of condensate and noncondensible gases which probably formed a stratified flow in the pipe without sufficient turbulence for mixing with the NaOH solution. The April 20 cleanout flow employed new procedures to assure effective abatement and to improve monitoring for earlier warning of an abatement failure. These procedures are detailed in the "Revised Cleanout Flow Procedure, Production Well KS-9, April 19, 1993". The principal revision in the startup abatement procedure was to inject NaOH solution upstream and immediately downstream of the throttling valve where flow conditions would be turbulent, even in the absence of steam flow.

Introduction

This and other cleanout flows at Puna are designed primarily for cleanout and sampling purposes and are not intended to be comprehensive well tests. The duration of flow and data acquisition program are not adequate for complete well test or reservoir analyses. A static pressure and temperature survey was run in KS-9 on February 7, but none were run in conjunction with the April 20 cleanout flow. PGV decided against running additional surveys to avoid the risk of any associated problems which could delay the startup and possibly jeopardize the project.

Description of Cleanout Flow Operation

The cleanout flow of production well KS-9 was completed on April 20, 1993, with a 3-hour and 39-minute period of steam-dominated flow. Sixteen days before, the wellbore had been packed with nitrogen, and for the first hour of flow on April 20, only nitrogen with some contamination of noncondensible gases from the resource was produced. Production of geofluids began with a small slug of condensate, followed within five minutes by the onset of steam flow. Average total mass flow rate for the period of steamdominated flow was 126,000 lbjhr, and the average wellhead pressure was 1,910 psig. The maximum flow rate was 179,000 lb/hr at a wellhead pressure of 1,900 psig. The well's potential was much greater, but higher rates were not needed to achieve the cleanout objective, and the rate was purposely constrained to avoid possible problems of excess H2s emissions or liquid carryover from the atmospheric separator.

PUNA GEOTHERMAL VENTURE WELL KS-9 CLEANOUT FLOW OPERATIONS REPORT April 20, 1993

Flow rates were calculated from James tube lip pressure readings using an assumed wellhead enthalpy of 1,085 Btujlb, which was the enthalpy of KS-8. The James tube bore (9. 562 inches) is relatively large for the flow rates involved, so lip pressure readings were below the range for optimum flow measurement accuracy. More precise measurements of flow and enthalpy will be obtained with the well on production to the power plant.

Table 1 is a listing of data and calculated flow rates for the cleanout flow. As shown in the table, the first hour after opening the throttle valve involved blowing down nitrogen from the wellbore before the first production of geofluid. The wellbore had been packed with nitrogen on April 4, 1993, after completion of a workover job. The calculated wellbore capacity at static conditions was about 140,000 scf of nitrogen, or about 10,000 pounds of nitrogen. The nitrogen was sampled at the wellhead one day before the cleanout flow and was found to have no detectable level of H~S. However, in recognition of the likelihood of H2S contaminat1on in the nitrogen at depth, NaOH solution was injected into the flowline for abatement during the entire period of nitrogen blowdown. During this time, NaOH solution was injected at three different points on the flowline, providing redundancy and thorough mixing for the abatement reaction.

Figure 1 is a schematic diagram of the cleanout flow facility. As shown in the figure, there are manual throttling valves on the flowline near the wellhead, and the flow is piped to an atmospheric separator (also called a muffler) where steam is vented vertically to the atmosphere and water is drained to a lined pit. There are abatement injection points and fluid sampling points on the flowline, as shown.

The flow operations, sampling and abatement were executed essentially as specified in the Revised Cleanout Flow Procedure, except there was no interruption of the flow to tighten wellhead flange bolts because no leaks developed. Minor leaks are common on a first-time startup of a high-temperature well, and a shutdown had been planned for retightening flange bolts after 30 minutes of flow. However, this was not_ required.

As planned in the Revised Cleanout Flow Procedure, the flowline was monitored for H2 S and liquid pH during the period preceding steam flow for early detection of any abatement failure. H2S concentration in the flowline never exceeded 1 ppm, and liquid pH never went below 12. o units, both of which were indicative of effective abatement. Neither the stationary monitors nor the

Safety Supervisor with a hand-held GasTec detected any H2s on the well pad.

After the onset of steam-dominated flow, fluid samples were collected from the flowline and from the atmospheric separator for characterization of the produced fluids and emissions to the atmosphere. Results of these analyses will be reported separately.

In compliance with permit requirements, steam from the flowline and muffler (upstream and downstream of abatement injection) were sampled and analyzed for H2S, and emission rates were calculated. As shown on Tecton' s Summary Data Sheet, H2s emissions did not exceed 1.25 lb/hr and the abatement efficiency was better than 99 percent. This abatement efficiency is slightly higher than that achieved on KS-8 and is probably a result of injecting NaOH solution upstream of the James tube rather than downstream. The upstream abatement injection was done for approximately the last 2~ hours of flow to take advantage of the additional turbulence and reaction time through the James tube. This was apparently effective. Abatement upstream of the James tube is not standard industry practice because most geothermal resources produce a brine phase which precipitates silica scale with the addition of caustic. However, the liquid phase in the new Puna production wells is apparently a condensate and is very low in silica and other dissolved solids. Injection of caustic did not cause significant scale deposition in the flowline.

Following the cleanout flow, the temporary piping to the atmospheric separator was removed and the permanent production piping was connected to the wellhead. KS-9 was restarted the next day at about 1300 hrs, supplying steam to the power plant.

Subject: KS-9 Chemical Analyses

Dear Tom:

June 10, 1993

Enclosed are chemical analyses of brine and steam condensate that the Mesquite Group, Inc. collected during the KS-9 cleanout flow on April 20, 1993. Brine samples were collected from the bottom of the flowline and steam condensate samples were collected from the top of the flow line. Both sample types utilized a small separator and were collected from cooling coils submerged in tap water to prevent flashing. The methods used for sampling are listed in Tables 1 and 2. All sample bottles were washed in 10% by volume nitric acid and rinsed in deionized water before sampling. The analytical laboratories and methods are summarized in Tables 3 and 4. Blank samples (Table 5) were also submitted and analyzed. The chemical results are listed on the attached analyses tabulations.
