Activity 1Select a few pair of students and encourage them to have a simple conversation on things they see, or their previous day’s experience. Be particular that they use simple statements and questions during the course of their conversations.

We know that a sentence is a group of words that makes complete sense.

For example, groups of words below do not make complete sense.

1. Will go to class (who will go?)

2. I played. (what?)

Some additional words are needed to give complete meaning:

1. I will go to class.

2. I played cricket.

In the above sentences the highlighted words give the complete meaning.

Let us knowA sentence is made up of parts. The two main parts are the subject and the predicate.

In the examples above the answers to the questions are as follows:

Who will go? — ‘I’ (subject in the sentence)

Played what? — ‘played cricket’ (predicate in the sentence)

Activity 1Collect pictures of various things, persons, places and animals. Divide the class into five groups. Give mixed pictures and when you say ‘go’ ask students to sort them out as various kinds of nouns. Quickness can be rewarded with a point.

Activity 2For this noun game, have students pick a sport that they enjoy. Then have them write a list of nouns that relate to the sport. (For example, for basketball, they might choose ‘court,’ ‘basket,’ ‘backboard,’ and ‘rim.’) Have them stand up and read their lists aloud, and encourage the rest of the class to guess which sport the lists describe.
