“No Place for Hate” is an initiative started by the Anti-Defamation League that provides schools and communities with an organizing framework for combating bias, bullying, and hatred leading to long-term solutions for creating and maintaining a positive climate.

Dr. Marykay Feeley, Superintendent of Schools

NOT HERE!

TOGETHER, WE ARE BETTER

On October 2nd, Murray Avenue School kicked-off this year’s “No Place for Hate” campaign with a number of activities and assemblies geared toward supporting the campaign’s mission. Students wore the color yellow to mimic the

“No Place for Hate” logo.

NO PLACE FOR HATE

Our schools welcomed back students to the new school year with a variety of activities. The activities generated excitement from students and laid the foundation for a great school year.

At Pine Road School Elementary School, the music teachers, Mr. Glen DeGeorge and Mr. Evan Weisblatt, took the school song and crafted new lyrics that reflected the District’s “No Place for Hate” initiative. The song was then taught to students in Town Hall meetings. Pine Road also held its first annual Family Picnic on its playground to cap off the first week back to school.

At Murray Avenue School, students took part in “Break the Box” activities, to build camaraderie. They had to answer questions in teams in order to unlock a mystery box. They also participated in student assemblies in order to learn more about the school’s theme for the year—“Don’t Quit…Get Grit”—and about how to cultivate a “growth mindset.”

At Lower Moreland High School and the other schools, parents were invited to “Back to School” nights where they could meet teachers and administrators and hear more about what the schools have planned for the school year ahead.

In September, five LMHS seniors Jessica Hutchison, Benjamin Nguyen, Anastasia Shchurin, Michael Watanabe, and Eliana Yi were named National Merit Semifinalists. Approximately 1.6 million juniors across the nation entered the 2018 National Merit Scholarship Program by taking the 2016 PSAT. All semifinalists are eligible to receive 7,500 National Merit Scholarships worth $33 million. An announcement will be made in spring 2018 about the scholarship winners.

Counselors Maura Quinn, Nicole Specht and Jennifer Romano were proud to stand with National Merit Scholarship Semi-finalist Jessica Hutchison, Benjamin Nguyen, Anastasia Shchurin, Eliana Yi and Michael Watanabe.

The High School Spanish Club, under the sponsor-ship of Dr. Jamie Lincow, held its first meeting of the school year on October 12th. The students had fun making crafts in the “Day of the Dead” tradition.

Day of the Dead (Dia de los Muertos) is a Mexican holiday, celebrated on November 1st and 2nd. The festivities start at midnight on October 31. Painted skulls are often used to decorate the gravestones of the deceased.

Lower Moreland High School administrators (Principal William Miles, Assistant Principals Ernie Rehr and Anthony Veneziale, and Athletic Director Matthew Heiland) made a donation to the Hurricane Relief Fund for Houston for every goal scored by our varsity teams (Girls and Boys Soccer, Field Hockey) that played games on September 1st. The teams scored 11 in all!

Lower Moreland High School juniors – Anjali Simon and Nadiya Smuk – collected donations at a local Walmart for the school’s hurricane relief effort. They raised $800 and collected numerous donations of pet supplies.

On August 5th a massive Category 4 Hurricane named Harvey made landfall near Rockport, Texas with winds of 130 mph. Harvey meandered around southern Texas for days as a weakening hurricane and tropical storm. As a tropical storm, it dropped 40-61 inches of rainfall in southeast Texas and southwest Louisiana. All-time U.S. tropi-cal cyclone rain records were broken. Americans watched in horror as the storm

triggered flash flooding in parts of Arkansas, Ken-tucky, and Tennessee from Aug. 31-Sept. 1. Harvey’s long-lived odyssey came to an end but, its catastrophic impacts will be felt long into the future. Many families and businesses were destroyed.

The students and faculty of Lower Moreland re-sponded with concern and compassion seeking cre-ative ways to aid in the re-covery effort. Here are two examples.

Pine Road Elementary School held a Boosterthon Fun Run on October 12th. Students did laps around the playground, and families and friends of the students pledged money in sup-

port of this fundraiser. Funds raised will sup-port, enhance and grow the school’s outdoor

learning space. The students in each grade who had the most pledges were able to throw a pie in the face of a staff member who volunteered for this!

Lower Moreland High School Senior Connor Killion received a Senator Citation from Pennsylvania Senator Stewart Greenleaf for his 1st place Backstroke performance at the PIAA State Meet. He finished with a time of 49.64. Also mentioned in the citation was Connor’s 2nd place 200 yard Freestyle performance (1:40.72) and his role on the 2nd place 200 yard Medley Relay team.

The Lower Moreland High School Drama Club will put on a production of 12 Angry Jurors on November 9-11.

Synopsis:

Following the closing arguments in a murder trial, the 12 members of the jury must deliberate, with a guilty verdict meaning death for the accused, an inner-city teen. As the dozen men try to reach a unanimous decision while sequestered in a room, one juror casts considerable doubt on elements of the case. Personal issues soon rise to the surface, and conflict threatens to derail the delicate process that will decide one boy’s fate.

On October 4th, LMHS teacher Erin Stroup welcomed Jeff Coffin and Rashawn Ross, saxaphone player and trumpet player for the Dave Matthews Band. The Dave Matthews Band, is an American rock band that was formed in Charlottesville, Virginia in 1991.

Jeff Coffin and Rashawn Ross held a series of duo clin-ics on the East coast in October. The first school on the line-up was Lower Moreland High School. The musi-cians held a clinic and then rehearsal with our High School and Murray Avenue School band and jazz en-

semble students. In the evening, they held a special rehearsal with our jazz ensemble stu-dents with the jazz lab band students observ-ing.

Zeswitz Music, who provides musical instruments for the District, was a sponsor for this event.

The students also partic-ipated in the “#pur-plethursday aware-ness day” to help make people aware that one in four women will be vic-tims of domestic vi-olence at some point in their lives. This effort was part of the students’ health unit for healthy and un-healthy relationships.

AWARENESS

Health Class works to Raise Awareness about Domestic Violence

Mrs. Catherine M. Siciliano, who teaches Business at Lower Moreland High School and Graphic Design at Murray Avenue School, attended a three-day professional development training to introduce high school business

educators to an accounting curriculum modeled after the AP Structure. A college prep accounting course builds a bridge between high school accounting educators and college and university accounting programs. Partnerships with American Accounting Association, American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, and Pathways Commission were made to pilot a rigorous college-level course with qualifying exam to entice College Board to consider adding Accounting to the AP Curriculum. Mrs. Siciliano is participating in the Accounting Pilot and Bridge Project to help prepare our students for Accounting at the college level.

The 3rd annual Lower Moreland/Bryn Athyn (LM/BA) 5K Community Color Run, a fundraiser for the Lower Moreland High School Mini-THON, was held on September 9th. It was a very successful day of charity and community with over $10,000 raised for the Four Diamonds Fund and the fight against pediatric cancer.

Lower Moreland High School participated in “Red Ribbon Week®” -- October 26-31. The National Family Partnership provides drug awareness by sponsoring the annual National Red Ribbon Campaign™. The Red Ribbon serves as a catalyst to mobilize communities to educate youth and encourage participation in drug prevention activities. The theme for 2017 is: Your Future is Key so Stay Drug Free. Studies have shown that children of parents who talk to their teens regularly about drugs are 42% less likely to use drugs than those who don’t, yet only a quarter of teens report having these conversations. School and parental support can help students stay drug free and have a bright future.

It was an exciting and fun-filled day at Pine Road School on October 27 as the students and staff celebrated Halloween. Each grade paraded their creative costumes around the outside of the building

for the community to see. There were witches and fairies, goblins and ghouls, zombies and skeltons, super-heroes, movie characters, and sports figures too. What a spectacular and sometimes scary sight to see!
