Scientific Method6/1
Process
Identifies a problem
Makes a guess about the problem
Collects the data
Analyzes the data
Finally makes a conclusion about the problem
Define the Problem
In defining the problem
Be clear
Form a question
Keep it to 1 idea
Collect Information
Use the information to make a guess
Use items like: article, references books, and online material
Read and think carefully
Formulate a hypothesis
A hypothesis is an educated guess
Use the information collected to make a hypothesis
Test the hypothesis
To test the hypothesis, you will need to do an experiment
Independent variable- What are you testing? – Vinegar water added to see if plants grow.
Dependent variable- What are you measuring? Water added to plants to see if they grow.
Control- Object used as a comparison – Plant Independent Dependent
Hypothesis: Does vinegar help plants grow?
Vinegar water added Water addedIndependent – y-axis
dependent – x -axis
Drawing a Conclusion
Don’t jump to conclusions
Keep it simple
Use data collected during the experiment to support your answer
It is: Yes or No- Maybe does not exist in Science
Does adding vinegar to your water help plants grow more than just adding regular water?
As long as you use data to back up your answer, you cannot be wrong.
