Professional Development Day Success: On Thursday December 11, 2008, an environmentally focused Professional Development day was held for interested teachers. It was attended by teachers representing approximately 25 schools. The themes of “systems thinking” and “biodiversity” were presented by Nancy McGee of the Toronto Regional Conservation Authority and Alan Crook from the Ministry of Natural Resources, respectively. The feedback was very positive for this PD, and will result in the students from those 25 schools having more enriched environmental educational opportunities.

2009 Top ‘9’ ENVIRONMENTAL RESOLUTIONS

1. Bring re-usable bags to the grocery store. 2. Remember to reduce packaging before

thinking about how to re-use or recycle it. 3. Become less of an energy user, starting

with lights off at home and at work. 4. Try to buy more locally grown food, less

processed food, and incorporate a meat free meal into more than one meal a week.

5. Drink “free” tap water, before spending money on bottled water.

6. Use less harmful cleaning products for household chores.

7. Attempt to try car-pooling, using public transit, or walk/ride to work or the local store.

8. Try to volunteer or become more active in environmental issues that will affect future generations.

9. Use less water.

EcoSchools Important Reminder For those schools striving to become certified EcoSchools this year, it is imperative that you have an ecoteam in place (including students) and the initial ecoreview for Energy Conservation and Waste Management completed before the end of January. Without these done you stand no chance of being certified! If you need assistance do not hesitate to contact one of the TCDSB ecoteam members. APRIL 30TH IS THE FINAL DUE DATE FOR SUBMITTING YOU CERTIFICATION BINDER.

CEC Environmental Refresher for 2009: On Wednesday January 21, 2009, the Atrium of the CEC will be filled with environmental information for all staff and visitors to the CEC to view. The day is designed to remind everyone of the important environmental contributions that individuals can make towards improving the environment at home & work. Stop by, and hopefully learn something new!

Ontario’s Catholic schools have existed for 160 years. Despite their success there is a persistent call from some quarters to amalgamate the Catholic schools into the secular system. What are

the arguments against our existence? What can we do to sustain our system? How can we improve support for Catholic schools in the 21st century? Attend the TCPVA Business Luncheon

and engage in this important dialogue.

St. Josaphat school celebrated Christmas on January 7th, according to our Eastern Rite calendar. Each year the grade 6 students recreate the traditional Nativity play, called 'Vertep', which originated as a puppet theatre in Ukraine during the 17th century. In addition to religious figures, popular folk depictions of day to day life, and also scenes from Ukraine's history are depicted.

Here we have King Herod and evil spirits trying to sabotage the journey to Bethlehem of historical figures. However, faith in God and unity help Ukrainian kings, kozaks, and other heroes overcome evil.

No Garbage Can for Grade One/ Two Class at St Paul's The grade one/two class at St Paul's has been a garbage-free class (i.e. no garbage pail) since September! Instead of a garbage can, they are reusing, recycling, and composting. The class does not always achieve 100% litterless lunches as there are a few new children and some that need reminders, but overall the participation is high. The kids keep a daily yes/no check on who is/isn't bringing a litterless lunch. Any

garbage brought in is "boomeranged" back home St. Paul Catholic School

Students from Brebeuf College focus on Faith in Action

Brebeuf College School has hosted its fifth annual Social Justice Symposium at the University of Toronto. Over 200 students from across the city came to hear from guest speakers and attend workshops on the theme of “Awareness of Unfairness: Connecting with the Developing World”. “The theme arose from planning discussions in our Faith, Peace and Justice group, which is modelled on similar groups at other Presentation schools,” according to Michael Da Costa,

a teacher and one of the event’s moderators. “Our students are aware of the Developing World through the Brother Maher Fund for Africa, a fundraising and education campaign to support the Presentation Brothers’ school in Yendi, Ghana.” After Mass, students heard from the day’s keynote speaker, Father James Webb S.J., the Provincial of the Jesuits in English Canada and a former teacher at Brebeuf. Father Webb has just returned to Toronto after twenty years in Jamaica. He had much to say about social justice and how big changes can come about in small steps and with one person at a time. Students also heard from a Rwandan genocide survivor, watched a documentary on child worker rights in India, and a slideshow presentation by a Brebeuf student who helped build a windmill and work in orphanages in Tanzania this past summer. The day ended with students participating in workshops run by social justice groups working in Toronto and the Developing World which gave students concrete ways to get involved and put their faith into action. $500 was donated for education in the poor parts of Jamaica and the various charity groups. “If even a few students become engaged in social justice causes as a result of the Symposium, then I’d call it a success,” added Michael Da Costa.

More than just an athlete Written by Nicholas Carafa, Catholic Register Special The Catholic Register - Week of February 1, 2009 Behind every serve, every free-throw, there is an athlete performing at his or her full potential to represent their team as best as they can. To everyone around them, they are just another volleyball or basketball player, however there is much more to that athlete than the jersey he or she wears. Throughout my years of playing high school sports, one thing I have learned is that the dedication and responsibility to maintain high-quality grades and show up to every practice, which may sometimes last until 5:30 p.m., every night are not easy. Time management is definitely a skill I have had to establish, and I am forever grateful that I developed this because I know it will help me in the future. Whether it is with a career or my university studies, I know I’ll be prepared. Playing various sports has taught me never to give up, even when you feel like everything is going wrong. Hard work and the passion to succeed both on the playing field and in life does not come at an easy price. Success is not prejudiced; it does not select one person over another. However, the ability rests on the shoulders of the individual to passionately triumph over adversity or live passively and allow failure to prevent them from moving on in their life. Learning to work alongside different personalities with different perspectives and attitudes has also benefited me. It has helped me to accept criticism and take the best advice from various people so I can live my life the best way possible. One of the greatest lessons I’ve learned through my team experiences is hard work; it may be the most significant component of living life. Whether I am practising a bump for volleyball or studying for that impossible math exam, the results are closely intertwined with my own efforts. “Practice makes perfect” is a cliché that I truly set my standards by because there is no better way to succeed in anything than by working hard at what you do best. In the end, the results will be rewarding. Participating in sports and being an athlete contributes to success inside the classroom. Discipline, focus and drive for accomplishment must be taught in an environment that any student finds comfortable. When a student contributes to something they are passionate about it makes the learning experience much easier. Nothing in life comes easy, and the problem may be that people may be ignorant of this concept. I was not always aware of this and I had others guide me and teach me. I believe it is now my turn to inform others and pass the knowledge others gave to me so that they also may work towards achieving success. Accomplishment and triumph are available to anyone who wants them, however, it is up the individual to go take hold of it because the finished product is infinitely valuable. I believe that my faith in God has helped me along the way. In tough situations I know He will always be by my side and guide me in the right direction when my way is unclear. (Carafa, 17, is a Grade 12 student at Toronto’s St. Basil-the Great College School.)

Let us remember in prayer the souls of the deceased members of the TCDSB

community and their loved ones, particularly the following who have died recently... for these we pray:

May the angels lead them into paradise. May the martyrs come to welcome them into the

new and eternal Jerusalem. The holy sacrifice of the Mass will

be offered for their souls. May they rest in peace.
