Characters from many wonderful books, such as Harry Potter, The Cat in The Hat and Where’s Wally reflected a great way to bring reading to life. We hope you enjoy the photos included in this newsletter. We also thank Mrs Beattie for co- ordinating the Book weeks activities, including an inspiring display at the library and a colouring competition that attracted many entries. A large selection of the short listed books by Australian authors is now available at the school library. Tell Them From Me survey will again be offered to students, parents and teachers with the view to gaining valuable feedback on what our school community thinks about school life, how engaged they are with school and the different ways that teachers interact with them. This information will support the school in improving student wellbeing practices. The survey typically takes 30 minutes or less to complete and will be administered by the school during normal school hours. Students in Years 4 to 6 will complete the survey. If you do not want your child to take part in the survey, please contact the school office. Parents are encouraged to give about 30 minutes of their time to go online and complete the survey. Responses are confidential and I thank you in advance for your assistance. Again, Moree Public School was represented by two groups prepared by the talented Mrs Ross and Miss March – original choreography and costumes, with the senior troupe performing to an original song, written and recorded by Mr McDonald and Studio Time. Performing at such a venue and supported by the Arts unit production team is an inspiring experience and I know many of our students will continue to develop their dancing talent based upon this special opportunity. Congratulations to the 31 dancers and their dance teachers Mrs Ross and Miss March. Thank you to Mrs Ireland for her support backstage and to the many parents who were able to attend and enjoy an evening of dance. Year 6 excursion returned with smiling (but weary) students and staff following the recent trip to Canberra and the snow. The excitement in their voices, sharing stories certainly reflects the fabulous time they had participating in a broad range of activities. It was clearly an enjoyable and educational experience for them. As always, the student represented our school with distinction and it was wonderful to have the coach driver offer that it was the best group he has taken away. Special thanks to the parent, Mr Carter who assisted on the excursion and also a sincere congratulations to the teachers Mr McDonald (organiser), Miss White. Miss Bright and Mrs Brown for their generosity in ensuring the trip could be part of the 2018 Year 6 experience. Tuesday, 28 th August 2018

The P&C Fathers Day stall is coming up and once again our dedicated members will be operating the stall for students to purchase a small gift for dad. The stall will be held on Thursday and Friday of this week. There will be some great gifts available for purchase so children will have the opportunity to spoil their dads and granddads. Each class will be taken to the stall during the morning session. Thank you in advance to the P&C fund raising committee for coordinating the gifts and to all the mums who will work on the stall. Strategy, concentration and patience were the order of the day as the MPS chess teams travelled for a tournament in Gunnedah last week. Chess is a game of skill and concentration and staying focussed on winning your match is not easy when there are many other games happening all around you. Nevertheless, our students played very well, winning some very close battles against some very tough opposition. Our congratulations go to both teams and thank you Mrs McCudden for running the Thursday chess club and accompanying the players to Gunnedah. Team 1: Asanda Aluthge (C), Harry Guest and Josh Kemp Team 2: Ben Walker (C), Darshan Senthil Kumar and Bailey R.

Jump Rope for Heart - Jump Off was a highly contested event with students displaying skill, enthusiasm and stamina. They have certainly enjoyed participating in Jump Rope for Heart this year. Jump Rope for Heart program raises much needed funds for research to help the fight against heart disease and stroke. Students who have elected to participate in the optional fund raising component through sponsorship, are asked to return their forms and money by Friday, 7th September. Our thanks go to Miss Larken and Mrs Hallam for coordinating the events. Congratulations also to those energetic (and slightly competitive) staff members who gave a brilliant display of skipping at the Friday lunch time teachers Jump Off! Miss Kleinig has been crowned 2018 champion, closely followed by Mrs Hunt and Miss Bright.

4. YEAR 6 MESSAGE OF APPRECIATION Dear Parents, Students in year 6 recently undertook an educational tour of the national capital – Canberra. While on this tour students participated in a variety of educational programs focussed on Australia’s history, culture, heritage and democracy. The Australian Government recognises the importance of all young Australians being able to visit the national capital as part of their Civics and Citizenship education. To assist families in meeting the cost of the excursion the Australian Government is contributing funding of $30 per student under the Parliament and Civics Education Rebate program towards those costs. The rebate is paid directly to the school upon completion of the excursion. Together with Miss White, Miss Bright, Mrs Brown and our parent helper Mr Carter, I would like to congratulate the year 6 students who took part in this year's Canberra excursion. Our sensible, well-mannered students represented Moree Public School well as they visited the old and new parliament houses (meeting local member, Hon Mark Coulton MP in the process), Questacon, the Australian Institute of Sport and the National Museum. Ice skating and a visit to the snow of Mount Selwyn were particularly favourite activities. We can also honestly say that this was the quietest group in the dining hall we’ve ever seen! Staff and students would also like to thank Mr Carter for taking time from his busy schedule to accompany us on the trip - his help was very much appreciated.

Parliament House; Mt Selwyn snow; and Australian War Memorial – magnificent!

Sincerely Mr A. McDonald

On Wednesday, 8th of August the Year 4 students travelled to Coffs Harbour for the annual Year 4 Excursion. The first day involved a guided tour through the Dorrigo Rainforest where students walked amongst diverse bushland and wildlife and even got up close to a few wandering bush turkeys. Finishing with perfect photo opportunity on the skywalk allowed the students to view the spectacular great escarpment. The next stop was the Big Banana where students enjoyed a heart-pumping game of laser tag followed by 18 challenging holes of minigolf. That evening

students experienced a hands-on activity with a variety of reptiles including a giant python, green tree snake and baby crocodile. The fun continued on the second day with lessons, tours and shows at Dolphin Marine Magic. The students were amazed by the acrobatic skills displayed by the resident dolphins and sea lions and were lucky enough to give them a pat and receive a special dolphin kiss. The marine adventures continued at the Solitary Islands aquarium. Students explored the exhibits to investigate and interact with fish and underwater creatures local to the rock pools and reefs or the nearby marine park.

The afternoon activities wrapped up with beach games with a highly contended sandcastle building competition. After dinner, students went to Club 300 for an exciting game of ten pin bowling. With high scores, wobbling pins and lots of laughter, the students had a blast! Friday morning started with a visit to the Butterfly Sanctuary where the students took a stroll amongst hundreds of live Australian butterflies. They also viewed a giant caterpillar, stick insects and other weird and wonderful critters. On the trip home, the students were treated with a special visit to Ebor falls. A big thankyou to Miss Larken, Miss Jones, Miss Carlin, Mr Beddoes, Mr Kelly and Mrs Jackson for their assistance throughout the excursion. Without their hard work and support the excursion wouldn’t be the success that it was. Mr Burgess
