Dances Around the World

Every nation has its own traditional dances that characterize its culture.

Let's look into some of the popular dances around the world and learn about their cultural background.

Fly over to South America and you'll be able to experience the attractive country of Argentina.

People in Argentina take great pride in their national dance called Tango.

It is enjoyed all over the world.

It's a dance performed with a partner and has a rich history.

It originated in Buenos Aires, the capital of Argentina, in the mid 19th century from the poor classes of

European immigrants.

People danced Tango to express their longings for their families that they left behind in their home countries.

At that time, Tango was thought to be too exotic, therefore making it ideal for lower class.

However, it spread rapidly through Europe in the early 1900s, especially in London and Paris.

The European popularity of Tango eventually made it more appropriate to the higher classes of Buenos Aires.

Now let's travel to Spain and meet the world-famous Flamenco dance.

It is the traditional dance of the gypsies of Andalucia, the southern region of Spain.

Even though Flamenco is still deeply connected to the gypsy culture, many non-gypsies have

contributed to expanding it both in Spain and overseas.

Flamenco expresses the deepest emotions, usually sadness, and reflects the sufferings of the gypsies.

It is a passionate dance in which the Flamenco dancer pours emotion from his or her body to the

sound of guitar strings.

In Asia, there is a unique dance in the Philippines, Tinikling.

It translates as "bamboo dance" in English and is one of the most popular Philippine dances.

Chapter 1. Shall We Dance?

This dance was born on the island of Leyte in the Visayan Islands.

The worst enemy of the people on the island was a particular bird that ate up the ripening rice grains.

To catch these annoying birds, the farmers would place traps made of bamboo.

This bird was named tikling, from which the Tinikling dance got its name.

The dance imitates the movement of the tikling birds escaping from the bamboo traps set by the farmers.

Today, the Tinikling is performed during cultural gatherings and holidays.

The last dance to introduce to you is a traditional dance of Korea known as the Farmer`s

Dance(Nongangmu).

Having originated in the Three Kingdoms Period, the Farmer`s Dance was traditionally performed during

planting, harvesting, and other agricultural events to give encouragement to farmers.

It was also often performed as a ritual to protect the village and to give thanks to the river or

mountain spirits.

The Farmer's Dance is characterized by its fast-paced music and vibrant body movements.

The most exciting feature of the dance is that the dancers have long, white paper ribbons attached to

their hats and twirl them to the music.

Today the Farmer's Dance is seen mostly at special festivals and art competitions.

However, it can also be witnessed from time to time at major village events in rural areas.

There are many ways to learn about the culture of other countries.

Learning about their traditional dances can be an interesting way to expand your knowledge.

But there is a more effective way: instead of learning about a dance, learn the dance itself!

It translates as "bamboo dance" in English and is one of the most popular Philippine dances.

Chapter 1. Shall We Dance?

Having originated in the Three Kingdoms Period, the Farmer`s Dance was traditionally performed during

But there is a more effective way: instead of learning about a dance, learn the dance itself!
