ACN

Director’s Report

In this the 2013

Annual Report of

the Australian

Centre for

NanoMedicine

(ACN) we reflect

over the last

twelve months

with much pride

on our research

achievements and

how the work of our 50+ team is impacting from our

research benches, all the way to clinical bedside.

Team ACN continues to work on diseases including

neuroblastoma, lung, blood and pancreatic cancers,

while diabetes, asthma and uveitis are part of our non-

cancer portfolio. Our skills in drug delivery, imaging

agents and diagnostic devices are producing valuable

outcomes reflected in the over 50 publications released

between our inception in July 2011 to the end of 2013.

Our success in grants through Australian/State

Governments, cancer institutes and industry

collaboration reached $AUD8M ($3.4M in 2013), with

this figure excluding ACNs involvement in two

Australian Research Council’s Centre of Excellence bids

that were announced in December 2013 for

commencement in 2014.

The two Centre’s, The ARC Centre of Excellence in

Convergent Bio-Nano Science and Technology includes

ACN Team members Scientia Prof Justin Gooding, Prof

Maria Kavallaris, A/Prof Palli Thordarson; while the

ARC Centre of Excellence in Advanced Molecular

Imaging, includes Prof Kat Gaus.

ACN’s has also enjoyed success with a number of

prestigious awards bestowed on individuals. While each

award is great recognition to ACN, there is one award

presented to Maria Kavallaris that is extremely special.

Maria was included in the National Health and Medical

Research Council’s list of High Achievers. We at ACN

know Maria is an excellent researcher and human being,

but it was great to have it publically acknowledged.

Also success for Justin Gooding and Kat Gaus both

winners in the NSW Science and Engineering Awards.

Kat in the Excellence in Biological Science division and

Justin in Emerging Research.

At ACN we are passionate about finding ways to

advance nanomedicine. To aid this mission, we worked

with the Australian Nanotechnology Alliance resulting in

a change of that organisation’s direction from “general

nanotechnology” to nanomedicine. Subsequently

ANA’s name changed to the Australian Society for

NanoMedicine (ASNM).

The decision taken by UNSW in 2011 to established our

unique research centre incorporating researchers from

UNSWs faculties of Engineering, Medicine and Science

and our strategic vision to create disease focused teams

incorporating Team ACNs skills in drug delivery,

diagnostics and imaging, has, in less than three years

brought recognition to UNSW and recognition to

Australia that we are world leaders in this

research/medical discipline.

We hope you enjoy reading about all these important

activities and events of the Centre and we look forward

to reporting on more exciting research and successes in

the future.
