The Chrism Mass is a celebration of the unity of the entire local church in its role as a

priestly people. Gathered around one altar to pray with our Archbishop in praise and

thanksgiving, priests and lay people are brought to a new realization of our

interdependence as we respond in our various ministries to Christ’s call to serve.

The focus of this archdiocesan celebration, the blessing of the oils and consecration of the

Chrism which gives the Mass its name, is a strong expression also of the unity of the church

and the pastoral concern of all ministers.

Jesus is the Anointed One, and all whom he calls to follow him are anointed with Chrism at

their baptism and again at Confirmation, as they receive the spiritual anointing of the Holy

Spirit. Those whom the Lord calls to serve his people in the ordained ministry are anointed

at their ordination.

Also blessed tonight is the Oil of Catechumens, which will be used to anoint candidates for

baptism before they go to the font of life to be reborn. Anointing with the Oil of

Catechumens extends the effect of the baptismal exorcisms and strengthens the

catechumens to renounce sin and accept the challenge of Christian living.

God’s people are called also to a ministry of healing. The Oil of the Sick being blessed this

evening will be used in the sacrament of Anointing of the Sick in parishes, homes, and

hospitals, to give those who are ill in mind and body the strength to bear suffering and pain.

At the Chrism Mass, the anointed people of God in their ministries gather to witness the

blessing of these oils. The subsequent use of the blessed oils in the churches of the

archdiocese is a further sign of the unity we affirm and celebrate in the Eucharist.

La Misa Crismal es la celebración de la unidad de toda la iglesia local en su papel como

pueblo sacerdotal. Reunidos alrededor de un mismo altar para orar con nuestro Arzobispo

en alabanza y agradecimiento, los sacerdotes y los laicos son levados a una nueva

concientización de nuestra interdependencia mientras respondemos, en nuestros diversos

ministerios, al llamado de Cristo a servir.

El enfoque de esta celebración diocesana-la bendición de los óleos y la consagración del

santo Crisma que da nombre a la Misa, es una fuerte expresión de la unidad de la iglesia y

la preocupación pastoral de todos los ministros.

Jesús es el Ungido, y todos los que él llama para seguirlo están ungidos con el santo Crisma

en su bautismo y nuevamente en la Confirmación, mientras reciben la unción del Espíritu

Santo. Aquellos a quienes el Señor llama a servir a su pueblo en el ministerio del sacerdocio

son ungidos en su ordenación.

También se bendicen esta noche el Óleo de los Catecúmenos, que se usará para ungir a los

candidatos para el bautismo antes de que vayan a la fuente de la vida para renacer. La

unción con el Óleo de los Catecúmenos extiende el efecto de los exorcismos bautismales y

fortalece a los catecúmenos para que renuncien al pecado y acepten el desafío de la vida

Cristiana.

El pueblo de Dios también está llamado a un ministerio de sanación. El Óleo de los

Enfermos que se bendice esta noche se usará en el sacramento de la Unción de los

Enfermos en las parroquias, hogares y hospitales, para dar a los enfermos de cuerpo y alma,

la fuerza para soportar el sufrimiento y el dolor.

En la Misa Crismal, el pueblo ungido de Dios en sus ministerios se reúne para dar

testimonio a la bendición de estos santos óleos. El uso posterior de los santos óleos en las

iglesias de la arquidiócesis es un signo más de la unidad que afirmamos y celebramos en la

Eucaristía.

En aquel tiempo, Jesús fue a Nazaret, donde se había criado. Entró en la sinagoga, como era

su costumbre hacerlo los sábados, y se levantó para hacer la lectura. Se le dio el volumen

del profeta Isaías, lo desenrolló y encontró el pasaje en que estaba escrito:

El Espíritu del Señor está sobre mí, porque me ha ungido para llevar a los pobres la buena

nueva, para anunciar la liberación a los cautivos y la curación a los ciegos, para dar

libertad a los oprimidos y proclamar el año de gracia del Señor.

Enrolló el volumen, lo devolvió al encargado y se sentó. Los ojos de todos los asistentes a

la sinagoga estaban fijos en él. Entonces comenzó a hablar, diciendo: “Hoy mismo se ha

The Archbishop invites the priests to renew their commitment to priestly service. After each

question, the priests respond: “I am.”

El Arzobispo invita a los sacerdotes a renovar sus promesas

After the priests have renewed their commitment, the Archbishop invites us to prayer as we

intercede for our priests.

Blessing of the Oils

Bendición de Los Santos Óleos

The blessing of this oil asks the Lord to strengthen those who are ill and to free them from

their pain. We pray that those who are anointed with this oil may have the strength to bear

suffering and may be touched by the healing power of Christ.

Con la bendición de este óleo le pedimos al Señor que fortalezca a los enfermos y los libre

del dolor. Oramos para que los que sean ungidos con este óleo tengan el valor de soportar

sus sufrimientos y que sean tocados por el poder sanador de Cristo.

By the Oil of Catechumens, the effect of baptismal exorcisms is extended. The candidates

for baptism are strengthened to renounce sin and evil before they go to the font of life to be

reborn through baptism.

El óleo de los catecúmenos los fortalece con el poder de Cristo Salvador. Con la unción de

este óleo, los candidatos para el bautismo son fortalecidos para renunciar al pecado y la

maldad antes de acercarse a la fuente de la vida para renacer por medio del bautismo.

This is the chief anointing oil. It is fragranced oil used in the Sacraments of Initiation and

Holy Orders, as well as for special actions and dedications, such as a new church and a new

altar. As the Christ oil, it brings the community’s focus upon Jesus, and invites us to put on

Christ.

Este es el óleo principal para ungir. Es un óleo fragrante que se utiliza en los sacramentos

de iniciación y también para acciones y dedicaciones especiales, como la bendición de un

altar nuevo o de una nueva iglesia. El óleo de Cristo enfoca la comunidad en Cristo Jesús y

la invita a ser como Él.
