Our Lady of Good Counsel Parish • 2

O ur Lady of Good Counsel Church in Aurora, Illinois, is a diverse and unified community of Christ’s disciples living our Catholic- Christian faith through worship, fellowship and service bringing God’s transforming love to our parish and our world.

MISSION STATEMENT MISSION STATEMENT MISSION STATEMENT

Message from our Pastor Fr. Timothy

A Week with the Lord Jesus is inviting us, starting today, to spend a week with him. Just as he invited the apostles to do the same – and they fell away – we also want to be with him for this most central part of his mission. Today, together with the Univer-sal Church, we remember and celebrate his triumphant en-try into Jerusalem with shouts of “Hosanna” and the waving of palms. Today’s Mass has two Gospels – both from Mark this year. The first one is read before Mass and recalls this joyful moment when all of Jerusalem proclaimed Jesus as Lord. The second is the account of his passion, suffering and death and is read at the normal time during Mass with the participation of all present. Jesus is inviting us to participate in spirit as well. These are the following events marked by the liturgy this Holy Week:

Holy Thursday Only two Masses are permitted on this day. The first is with the Bishop and all the priests together at the Cathe-dral in Rockford. It is called the Chrism Mass since the Holy Chrism and other holy oils are blessed by the Bishop and distrib-uted to a representative of each parish. The other is the Mass of the Lord’s Supper held in the evening at each parish. Here we remember how Jesus gave us the Eucharist for the first time before going to the Garden of Gethsemane to prepare for his crucifixion. This Mass is celebrated with the church specially pre-pared. The images of the saints are covered. The tabernacle is empty. There is a solemn atmosphere of anticipation for what Jesus is about to suffer. The feet of 12 parishioners will be washed at this Mass in commemoration of Jesus’ “mandatum” to serve one another. At the end of Mass the Eucharist remaining will be taken to the altar of repose where people can pray and watch until midnight. The altar will be stripped and crosses will be covered.

Good Friday – No Masses may be celebrated this day when Jesus died on the cross. It is a worthy and good practice to fol-low in the footsteps of Christ by participating in the “Via Crucis” or Way of the Cross. These “stations of the cross” will be prayed with the Bishop, all the seminarians, and all the faithful through the streets of Aurora today. There is also a special liturgy in each parish in the afternoon around the hour of Christ’s death called the Liturgy of the Passion of the Lord. This is not a Mass but the faithful will be able to receive Communion from the Hosts conse-crated the evening before. The Passion of the Lord according to St. John will be read and the faithful will have the opportunity to venerate the Holy Cross. On this day the Church keeps the “paschal fast” by eating less and abstaining from meat. Where possible the fast should be kept until the first Mass of Easter on Saturday night.

Holy Saturday On this day the Church waits for the resurrec-tion of Christ which is first celebrated that night at the Easter Vigil Mass after sundown. There is no other Saturday evening Mass. The Easter Vigil Mass fulfills the Easter obligation of at-tending Mass. At this Mass those who have prepared during Lent are baptized with the newly blessed Holy Water of Easter. Other candidates also receive the sacraments of Confirmation or First Eucharist. Jesus is proclaimed and celebrated here as our resur-rected Lord, the source of our eternal life. Easter begins this night.

Fr. Timothy

Materials Available for Divine Mercy Sunday in Magazine Rack and for Purchase

Sunday April 8 is Divine Mercy Sunday. The message of The Divine Mercy is simple: that God loves us and wants us to recognize that His mercy is greater than our sins, so that we will call upon Him with trust, receive His mercy, and let it flow through us to others. As recorded in the Diary of St. Faustina, Our Lord said, “I want to grant a complete pardon to the souls that will go to Confession and receive Holy Communion on the Feast of My mercy.” So, Our Lord's promise of complete for-giveness is a reminder that He is truly present and truly alive in the Eucharist filled with love and waiting for us to turn to Him in trust. And it is a call for us all to be washed clean in His love through Confession and Holy Commun-ion, no matter how terrible our sins, and begin our lives anew. Learn about the Hour of Great Mercy, The Image, The Divine Mercy Chaplet and Divine Mercy Novena.
