WELCOME!

Welcome to the first newsletter of the Bach Competition Würzburg! From it’s very beginning 25 years ago, the International Piano Competition J. S. Bach, Würzburg had a clear pedagogical goal: to promote Bach interpretation and pedagogy internationally, and to engage musicians in constructive dialogue. True to this goal, the competition is active in a number of different fields, which engage performers, musicologists, the concert going public, teachers and students. The directions can be summarised as follows: PEDAGOGY, PERFORMANCE and RESEARCH. The competition offers numerous platforms, from those requiring participation, such as: masterclasses, workshops, seminars and courses; to the collaborative: chamber and orchestral performances, solo recitals, CD recordings; to the academic: lectures, conferences, and the newly founded musicological journal of the competition; and the informal: the YouTube channel and Facebook page. The quarterly newsletters offer an overview of the areas in which the Competition, its jury and prize-winners are active and allows the Bach community to stay in touch.

25th Anniversary Brochure

In December 2017, a brochure was published commemorating the 25th anniversary of the Bach Competition, Würzburg. Since its inception, the International Piano Competition J. S. Bach, Würzburg has made a special name for itself in the musical world: with 771 competitions from 58 countries, it occupies one of the leading positions among piano competitions and is now the world’s largest Bach Competition by number of participants, repeat participation, and size of repertoire. The brochure details the history of the competition, greetings from patrons and directors, including Gustav Alink, Inge Rosar, and others. Contestants, Prizewinners, and host families provided numerous stories. There are also updates on the careers of former prizewinners, and an overview of programs. The brochure is available for sale for 20 € plus a 5 € Postage fee. ALL PROCEEDS from the sales of

the Brochure go towards funding the next competition (the 10th Competition takes place in March 2019). Support the competition, and order a copy! Payment (without charge to the receiver) through PayPal: [email protected] Please remember to include your Name and Postage address in the message!

Concert Diary The last concert as part of the Bach Project 2017 achieved a great resonance! It was a sold-out performance featuring two of Bach’s double concertos at the State Hermitage in St. Petersburg, Russia with Maestro Igor Gromov and the Moscow Chamber Schnittke-Orchestra as part of the XVII Conservatory Week Festival. According to one critic it was “one of the highlights of the Festival.”

A number of concerts are planned internationally in 2018 as part of the Bach Project. These include concerto appearances with our partners The Amadeus Orchestra under Maestro Alfredo Corral in Argentina, and with The Chamber Orchestra at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music under Maestro Eduardo Diazmuños, as well as the presentation of the complete Chamber works with obbligato keyboard and the Musical Offering BWV 1079 over the course of 3 concerts at the Sydney Conservatorium. Wednesday March 7 The Bach Project Concert 1 Sonatas for Gamba and Piano Sonatas for Violin and Piano 1–3 Fox Chan Christoph Blickling Kirill Monorosi

Wednesday May 2 The Bach Project Concert 2 Sonatas for Flute and Piano Sonatas for Violin and Piano 4–6 James Kortum Kirill Monorosi Fox Chan Paul Rickard-Ford

Recordings

In 2016, the International Piano Competition J. S. Bach, founded the IPCJSB recording label in order to publish all recordings associated with the competition. This includes the recordings of Walter Blankenheim and Inge Rosar—the founders of the competition—as well as past and future competition winners. Eleven CDs have already been released. Support the competition, and look up the recordings through Spotify, iTunes, Amazon, Googleplay and Deezer as all proceeds from the sale of IPCJSB recordings go towards funding the competition!

Research

Bach interpretation invariably involves research. To help pianists conduct and publish their research in this field, a Musicological Journal—Journal of the International Piano Competition J. S. Bach, Würzburg—was founded in 2017. The journal seeks to encourage further research applicable to the interpretation, performance and pedagogy of the music of J. S. Bach and his circle, as well as Baroque music in general. It is our hope that this journal will enrich the competition, providing a platform for scholars, and a source of specialised information for performers, teachers, and students. Research in disciplines as diverse as: music performance, cultural studies, education, history, music theory and analysis, musicology, philosophy, psychology; relating to the main focus of this journal will be given consideration. For details, go to: http://www.bach-competition.de/journal/ Submissions should be sent to: Dr. Wojciech Wisniewski Editor, Journal of the International Piano Competition J. S. Bach, Würzburg e-mail: [email protected]
