Permasolid® Spectro Surfacer 5400

Permasolid® Spectro Surfacer 5400 is a 2K High Solid system that offers different application qualities. It may be used as an under hood color, sanding surfacer and as a non-sanding surfacer (compliant in 3.5 lbs/gal Sealer limit areas). The system includes six colored surfacers (white, black, yellow, red, green, and blue). Using this system, colors can be mixed according to mixing formulas. These colors are displayed in a set of color chips. 5400 is a high solids product with excellent filling power. It is also a fast wet-on-wet system for recoating with Permacron®, Permahyd® Hi-TEC or Base Coat Series 280/285.

Special tips 1. In order to make sanding easier, apply a guide coat each time before sanding. 2. When isolating certain spots, the best results are achieved with a medium film thickness of 3.0 – 5.0

Mils (80 -120 µm) in approx. 2 coats and overnight air drying or low baking/IR drying, even on problem substrates. With problem substrates, careful pretreatment is imperative and the surfacer must be applied to the entire area.

2. For air drying we recommend a minimum temperature of 59°F/15°C or 46°F/8°C, if Permasolid® HS Hardener 3307 Express is used.

3. Sanded surface should be re-sanded if not top-coated within 8 hours. 4. When used as an interior color, top coat is not necessary. 5. When finishing plastics please refer to VR Technical Data Sheet No. 901.1

Permacron®1:1 Elastic Primer Surfacer 3300 Permacron® 1:1 Elastic Primer Surfacer 3300 is a universal 2K Primer Surfacer for all plastic parts commonly found on passenger car exteriors. This primer surfacer can be applied as part of an economical two-stage system, since it can be recoated directly with an elasticized top coat. It is characterized by good adhesion, high elasticity and easy application. Permacron® 1:1 Elastic Primer Surfacer 3300 is available in gray and black.

The substrate must be free of release agents. Clean with soap and warm water.

Bake plastic parts for 60 minutes at 140°F/60°C before cleaning so that release agents are forced to the surface of the part. Clean with Priomat® Plastic Reducer 8581 or Permaloid® Silicone Removers 7087 or 7010. The extent of the cleaning required depends on the type and quantity of the release agents present. To assist in the cleaning process, we recommend the use of a gray scuff pad (3M-7448).

Allow the cleaning fluid to evaporate completely. (e.g. by setting aside overnight or by baking for 30-40 minutes at 140°F/60°C) OR Apply Permahyd® Plastic Cleaning Paste 7081 with a gray or gold scuff pad and hot water. Rinse thoroughly with water. Bake parts for 15-30 minutes at 140° F. Scuff once more with Permahyd® Plastic Cleaning Paste 7081 and a gray or gold scuff pad. Rinse thoroughly with water, then dry.

Before applying the further treatment, clean all substrates once more with Permaloid® Silicone Removers 7087 or 7010. Apply Spies Hecker Priomat® Elastic Primer 4190. Permahyd® Plastic Cleaning Paste 7081 can be used prior to application of Priomat® Elastic Primer 3304 Transparent (see TDS for 7081 and TDS 901.1 Paint System for Plastic Parts).

Blend-in system: Preparation and application of solid and metallic colors

1. Sand Surfacer (dry with P500-800 or wet sand with P600-1000). 2. Use a fine sanding pad, 3M 07745 (gold) for hard to reach areas, prior to preparation of blend area.

Thoroughly sand surrounding area with P800 – 1000 dry, with a dual action sander and proper backing pad. It is possible to wet sand utilizing P1200 – 1500 grit.

3. Wash the entire area with Permahyd® Silicone Remover 7085 or Permahyd® Silicone Remover 7096

4. Apply 1 coat of Permahyd® Blending Additive 1050 to the surrounding blend area. 5. Apply Permahyd® Hi-TEC Base Coat 480 to completely cover the surface area, overlapping slightly

Special tips (continued): Three stage pearl colors: 1. Apply Permahyd® Hi-TEC Base Coat 480 (ground color) to completely cover the surfaced area,

overlapping slightly onto the original finish. Allow ground coat to flash-off. 2. Apply1 ½ -2 coats of ready to spray Permahyd® Hi-TEC Base Coat 480 (mid coat color) slightly

overlapping this area, staggering each coat, with no flash time, so that it matches the original finish.

High metallic colors (Any formula which the color components contain 50% or more of metallic, not including system component A or system component B): Mix unreduced basecoat 4 parts color to 1 part Permahyd Hi-TEC 1050 Blender.Then reduce 25% with WT Reducer 6050 or 6051. Use this mixture for the entire repair.

1. Apply 1to 1 1/2 coats of 1050 Blender @ 22-26 psi. Up to 10% WT Reducer 6050 or Special Reducer 6051 may be added in hot and humid conditions

2. Apply blender to the entire panel with the exception of surfacer area. Use a 4 to 6 inch distance and fast strokes. Work from bottom of panel to top then top down.

3. Do not allow 1050 Blender to flash.

Blending The Base Coat Apply color to the blend area first, using 3 control coats at 10-14 inches from the panel. Use 26-28 psi and a 75% overlap throughout the entire repair.

1. Use an outside-in approach. Extend the first coat furthest, then each subsequent coat should be inside the previous coat. A “motorcycle wrist” action helps fade the color.

2. A diagonal blend helps produce the most undetectable repair. 3. Apply color to the surfacer (repair) area with a 1 ½ coat application. (1 full coat at 6-10 inches,

followed by an orientation coat at around 12 inch distance – higher humidity = further distance) 4. Keep a 75% or more overlap during the entire process.

• Use only when the temperature is at or above 90°F (32°C) and humidity is low. • Do not exceed 10% reduction. • Use as needed to keep a “wet edge” when applying Permahyd® Series 280/285/286 basecoat. • (Maximum recoat window for Permahyd® Base Coat Series 280/285/286 is 8 hours.)

Flash-off time: (before clear coat)

At 90°F/ 32°C (Relative humidity at 30% or less) Approx. 15 - 30 minutes. (30 minutes for three stage colors) Drying:

• Surface matting of small areas can be accelerated by utilization of an air diffuser. • Surface matting of large areas can be accelerated by using infra-red or low baking.

Permacron® Speed Blender 1036 Permacron® Speed Blender 1036 was developed to guarantee easy blending-in of 2K clear coats and topcoats. Permacron® Speed Blender 1036 is easy-to-use, has good wetting on all substrates and provides a very fine fade-out to the old finish.

Preparation: Sand the fade out-blend area carefully with a fine, dual action sander and P3000

(3M Trizact) and a soft interface pad. 6 inch disk (150 mm, optional for small areas with 3-inch disk).

Blend-in System for Permacron® and Permasolid® Clear Coats

1. Mix any Permacron® or Permasolid® Clear Coat Ready-to Spray per appropriate TDS. 2. Spray repair/blend area. 3. Mix 1 Part mixed clear coat with 4 parts Permacron® Speed Blender 1036 and apply over the 3M

Trizact P3000 repair area. 4. Use with VOC Compliant Clear Coat where required.

Final/Blend Coat Permacron® Speed Blender 1036 Add 50% 1036 to ready-to spray Clear Coat. Polishing of Blend Areas:

1. Sand with 3M Trizact P3000 over the overspray and blend area. Defects may be removed in the solid clearcoat area with P2000 and then followed by Trizact P3000

2. Polish area according to the polish manufacturer recommendation. Special Note: Blending in of Permacron® or Permasolid® Clear Coats is not an approved OEM repair, nor is it covered under the Spies Hecker Lifetime Warranty.
