  • Seeing in Black and WhiteAnother way of interpreting the subjectPredict how colors will translate into tonesTranslate the complex play of light into simple tones of black, white and gray with shape, form, lines, pattern, etc.

  • VisualizationPredict the tonal value of a subjectDepends on : light falling on it

  • Zone systemZone system as color on BW photographyScale from white to blackConsist of 10 zoneZone V is the mid tone / middle gray

  • Zone SystemI -II: Black without detailIII : Black with detailIV : Dark grayV : Middle grayVI : Light grayVII : White with detailVIII-X : White without detail

  • Composing in tonesSuccess in B&W photos depends on the ability to see how the tone works togetherShapeCamera angle vs backgroundFiltersContrast, shadowToning the print

  • Filters in BWComplementary color : darken the imageSame color : lighten the imageEx : Orange filter, lighten the skin tone (white with detail) Green filter, darken the skin tone

  • ToningSepia toning : old, warm, nostalgicBlue toning : cool, mystery

Understanding Latent ImageThe process from picture taking into a final photographic print

  • Film Processing

This a process is to turn our light sensitive film into negative, bringing out the latent image in the film and turning them non light sensitive.

The EquipmentsDeveloping tank , Developing reels ,

The ChemicalsDeveloper , Stop Bath , Fixer

  • The functions of the chemicals

Developer / Development processTo bring out the latent image inside a roll of film by changing silver halide into metallic silver. This process turns all exposed areas of the film into dark densities of silver metal.

Stop BathThis step is to halt the development process

FixerThe fixer solution patents the silver halide that has been converted into silver metal and discards the remaining silver halides not exposed to light, making the the film no longer sensitive to light.Latent image : invisible image recorded on photographic emulsion as a result of exposure to light. The latent image converted into a visible image by the action of developer.
