St Brigid’s School acknowledges the Bibbulmun people as the traditional custodians of the land upon which our school is situated.
Dear Parents, Caregivers and Community Members,
Western Australia (WA) Day is held on the first Monday in June each
year and is a State holiday only. It commemorates the foundation of the
Swan River Colony near Perth by European settlers in 1829, although
sightings and landings occurred as far back as 1616. Originally, Albany
on the south coast, was to be the capital of WA, but better resources for
shipping and farming were found on the Swan River and Perth became
the capital.
WA Day was previously known as Foundation Day, but to recognise Aboriginal people as
the original custodians of the land, the name was changed in April 2012.
WA was settled as a free colony, unlike some other parts of Australia like New South
Wales and Port Arthur. It was the only British colony in Australia established with land
grants to settlers. The settlers were given land in proportion to the quantity of people and
goods they brought to the colony and were only given the full title to their land when it
had been improved enough to be considered established and sustaining.
A reminder that this Monday, 5th June is a Public Holiday, Tuesday, 6th
and Wednesday, 7th June are student free days. Pentecost Sunday, which marks the end of the Easter season in the Christian calendar, celebrates the descent of the Holy Spirit on the Apostles. Pentecost 2017 falls 50 days after Easter 2017,
which, is this Sunday, 4 June. Thank you to the many families who came along to our Pentecost School v Parish Soccer match last Sunday afternoon. I am happy to report, the school won the match 1-0. It was a lovely evening to be together, watching parents and children playing soccer.
Well done to all the Pre Primary to Year Two children and their teachers for yesterday’s beautiful Liturgy in the Church. Thank you also Fr Roshan, parishioners and parents for joining us.

'When the day of Pentecost came,
they were all together in one place.
Suddenly a sound like the blowing
of a violent wind came from heaven
and filled the whole house where
they were sitting. They saw what
seemed to be tongues of fire that
separated and came to rest on each
of them. All of them were filled with
the Holy Spirit and
began to speak in
other tongues as the
Spirit enabled them.'

Hi Everyone, This week we commenced our training for the up-coming Lightning Carnival being hosted by St Mary’s, Boyup Brook on Friday 23rd June. The sports we will be participating in this year are NETTA (Yrs 3/4), Netball (Yrs 5/6) and Soccer (Yrs 3, 4, 5 and 6). We have already started our soccer training and the netballers will get under way this Friday at lunch time. I would like to thank Mrs Alysha Sculley for volunteering to come down during her lunch break to train our athletes. Further details regarding this carnival will be sent home shortly. I have had a number of students turning up to Phys Ed saying they are carrying an injury, only to see them running around during recess and lunch times. Therefore, if your child is unable to participate in their Phys Ed lesson, could this please be indicated by a signed note from parents? As always if there is anything you would like to discuss sport-wise, please pop in to see me. Mr T

WAAPA Winter School 2017
These July school holidays WAAPA is offering exciting programs for students in years 4 to 12. The Winter School includes classes in acting, drama, dance, screen acting and music theatre. Thank you Mr John Lucey for visiting
our school on Monday morning to talk
to us about the Cows Create Careers
program. The children learnt about the
many different industries and products
that come from milk.
In Kindy we have been talking about where our waste goes once we throw it in the bin. We
thought about what we could do with our paper waste rather than putting it in the recycling
bin and decided to try making paper. We used warm water and made paper pulp, then made
sure all the pieces were very small by using egg beaters. We used a round dip screen and
pressed the water out using towels. The last step was to flip it over like a pancake and let it
dry in the sun.
Now we have our very own paper to make something special with! Mrs Dodson
