Bondi Beach Tunnels – Refurbishment

Scope: A series of tunnels are located beneath Queen Elizabeth Drive, Bondi Beach. Additional storage facilities are also located under ramps at the beachfront. These facilities have deteriorated over time and are now found to be in unsound condition and have been strengthened with props until a permanent solution is selected. The refurbishment of the ramps as storage spaces was initiated as Stage 1 of the Tunnels project was completed in September 2009. Council has approved the recommendation to remediate and construct storage space under the Bondi promenade, as Stage 2 of the Bondi Beach Tunnels Project and proceed to detailed design and cost estimate by a Quantity Surveyor. A Consultant was engaged in December to prepare detailed designs for the construction. Preliminary plans were presented to the Project Control Group (PCG) on 18th January, 2010. Following review of the initial plans, the PCG provided further direction to the consultant. Plans together with cost estimates and a report will be presented to Council at its meeting on 16th February, 2010.

Junga Sounds On January 21, 6 – 9 pm, Waverley Mall will host an evening of free musical entertainment for young people aged under 18. Performances by Six Degrees, Night Owl, Jade Vowels and The Khanz will take place outside The Almost Famous Falafel Café – our major partner in this event. Young people can enjoy a mixture of jazz, soul, acoustic and electronic sounds and a cheap $10 set menu with their friends as part of this local drug and alcohol free event. The aim of the event is to provide young people with social opportunities in Bondi Junction while showcasing local young bands and promoting youth friendly local businesses. The event is being promoted through a JUNGA SOUNDS postcard which also surveys the recreational needs and interests of young people in Bondi Junction – prizes will be drawn on the evening of the event as an incentive for young people to fill in the flip-side of the postcard with this information. A local mural artist will also be drawing chalk art on Waverley and Oxford St. Malls to promote the event. In addition, the musicians themselves have also been promoting the event to their friends and other young people in their

community.

Information Bulletin February 2010 Local History Walks Return in 2010 Because history lives all around us and the best way to experience it is to get out there first hand experience it. Walk the history walk and you can talk the history talk! Local Studies Librarians have a unique role in interpreting local history and encouraging a community's engagement with it. One of the most popular local history activities we hold are local history walks. The enthusiasm of the local residents was not dampened by the weather - last year we walked when it was ferociously hot and also in the middle of winter.

Local History Walkers from one of last year’s walks This year’s 2010 history walks program has started, with two beach walks in January already held as part of the free summer activities program. This year’s program has seen the return of our four on-going favourites - the Tamarama, Bondi and Bronte beach walks and the ever-intriguing True Crime walk (which starts at Abe Saffron's boyhood home in Bondi). But to keep the program fresh and growing two new walks have been added this year - the Bondi Road Ramble and the Artists and Writers Walk. All details are on the Local Studies website.

Kimberly O’Sullivan – Steward telling history walkers the Bondi Mermaid story Carols by the Sea Carols by the Sea was again hugely successful with a huge crowd enjoying the balmy summer evening. Popular children’s entertainers “Go Seek” warmed up the crowd. Accompaniment for the carols was provided by Waverley Bondi Beach band, with the singing lead by MC for the evening Sophie Martin. Sophie was ably assisted by the Sydney Eastern Chamber Choir and the Pavilion community choir “Chorale on Bondi”. Money and food donations were collected for local charity – Norman Andrews House and chapel by the Sea, with WAYS benefiting from the proceeds of the sausage sizzle.

Carols by the Sea 2009 Seniors Christmas Party A hundred seniors from local nursing homes were thoroughly entertained when Bondi Pavilion staged its annual “Christmas Special” Seniors Concert. The show was compered by Mic Conway and featured the ever popular Ballet of 1000 years.

There were Christmas hats for everyone and free festive refreshments were served.

The next seniors’ concert will be held on Wednesday 3 March.

Mic Conway at the Seniors’ Christmas Concert Tibet’s Timeless Tantric Tradition A Photographic Study of the Gyuto Monastery Bondi Pavilion Gallery 19 – 31 January 2010 The Gyuto Monks of Tibet return to the Bondi Pavilion and photographer, Tobi Wilkinson has spent the last year documenting their lives in the Monastery. In amongst these fine art images, the monks will offer us morning chants, lunchtime meditation sessions, talks on tackling life issues and the powerful Jab Khru healing ceremony. They will also run their Culture for Kids classes offering kids of all ages the chance to work hands on with the monks making unique works of art.

Carollers, reindeers, Christmas trees and elves roamed throughout the commercial centres of Bondi Junction and Charing Cross during the festive season, bringing Christmas cheer to our community of visitors, residents and businesses alike, whilst Christmas elves wrapped Christmas gifts and Aunty Kim painted the faces of our younger visitors.

Christmas in Bondi Junction & Charing Cross Forever Fabulous – Seniors Week 21-28 March 2010 An exhibition on Oxford Street Mall, featuring photographs of Waverley’s more senior residents, culminated in a prize giving luncheon on the last Saturday of Senior’s week. This is a great promotion which is making our older people feel good about themselves and gets some really positive publicity in the community about ageing not stopping people from getting out and about and enjoying happy healthy lives.
