The 3 steps to clinical Hand Hygiene

9 | Dentalife | Infection Control Product Catalogue | www.dentalife.com.au

Barrier cream (Step 2) Intact skin is the first defence mechanism against infection1. Damaged skin can not only lead to infection in the host, but can also harbour higher numbers of micro-organisms than intact skin and hence increase the risk of transmission to others. Use of an oil-containing lotion or barrier cream three times a shift can substantially protect the hands of vulnerable healthcare workers against drying and chemical irritation, preventing skin breakdown. The product is also designed to work under plastic, vinyl and rubber gloves to provide supporting protection from chemical absorption or reaction with skin in case of any breach of the gloves.

Wash hands thoroughly with HandicareTM Handwash before applying HandicareTM Barrier Cream. Work the cream over hands to provide a film of barrier cream.

Moisturiser (Step 3) HandicareTM Moisturiser has been formulated for personal and professional use and will soothe, nourish and moisturise the skin. The product contains a carefully selected fragrance with an excellent acceptance and contact profile. The product does not contain any colouring or harsh preservatives to minimise the risk of irritancy.

Handwash (Step 1)Effective Hand Hygiene is the single most important strategy in preventing health care associated infections1.

WHO guideline2 states the following as priorities pertaining to Health Care Worker skin conditions:

» Determine the most suitable hand hygiene agents;

» Study the systematic replacement of conventional hand washing by hand rubbing;

» Develop hand hygiene agents with low skin irritancy potential;

» Study the possible advantages and eventual interaction of hand care lotions, creams, and other barriers to help minimise the potential irritation associated with hand hygiene agents.

The HandicareTM range has been developed specifically for this purpose. Available in 500mL pump packs for easy use. White, light weight, plastic wall brackets are also available for securing the pump packs to the wall for easy dispensing.

There is a recommended ‘5 moments’ for Hand Hygiene in a healthcare setting:

1. Before touching a patient

2. Before a procedure

3. After a procedure or bodily fluid exposure risk

4. After touching a patient

5. After touching a patients surroundings

For best results, wash with HandicareTM Handwash when hands are visibly dirty or contaminated with proteinaceous material, visibly soiled with blood or other bodily fluids, if exposure to potential spore forming organisms is strongly suspected or proven or after using the bathroom.

HandicareTM Handwash has been formulated with your hands in mind:

» Fragrance free – No residual fragrance or potential irritancy

» Colour free – No residual colour, staining or potential irritancy

» Paraben free – Does not contain the known class of irritants, Paraben preservatives

» Lather is freely rinseable with no residues

» Ingredients are completely biodegradable
