EVERYDAY STEWARDSHIP — RECOGNIZE GOD IN YOUR ORDINARY MOMENTS
GOD’S GPS NEVER FAILS
I use GPS wherever I go, and it serves me well most of the time. However, sometimes it leads me to a place that does not
exist. Then there are those times when I am about to turn, and the man inside my phone shouts out, “GPS signal lost!” or
“Rerouting!” The problem is, when the area is unfamiliar to me, I have no choice but to listen. I could try to get where I am
going by simple intuition or by pulling over to look at a paper map, but I don’t trust my sense of direction. And I haven’t
bought a paper map in close to a decade!
Many people move through life without any direction. They find themselves constantly rerouting and wondering when they
will ever get to a satisfying final destination. What they need is a compass and a companion for the journey. Yet they have no
idea how to get either.
Prayer can serve as a compass, and it connects us to a companion for the journey. Stewardship living is impossible without
prayer. If we count on our own will and believe we can become fruitful without daily contact with the Divine, we can find
ourselves looking for directions more than moving toward a destination. God, through prayer, will help us see all we have as a
gift. God, through prayer, will lead us away from materialism and selfishness and toward freedom and generosity. Even when
we fall to sin, the path back is clearer. God’s GPS signal is never really lost. — Tracy Earl Welliver, MTS

NEW YEAR’S DAY, JANUARY 1 Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God
HOLY DAY OF OBLIGATION Wednesday, January 1, 2020, we celebrate and honor Mary,
Mother of God and World Day of Peace. Our Lady is God’s
greatest Saint who loves us and intercedes for us with a Mother’s
love, In this gift of the New Year we dedicate ourselves to Holy
Mary’s Immaculate protection. A wonderful way to start off the
new year is to come together as a family by celebrating the Eu-
charist, asking God for blessings for the gift of New Year. Come
pray, pray for peace! Come, begin to be spiritually renewed!
Let us pray . . . God of heaven and earth, you came to us and took our earthly
flesh through the gift of Mary's yes. She is our Mother in faith,
as she is your earthly mother. We are thankful beyond our abil-
ity to thank you for the gift of her Son as our brother and savior.
Through her self-giving, we have been reconciled to you.
Bless us as we begin this New Year and endow us with the de-
sire and ability to create a world of peace.
We ask all this, through the intercession of Mary to you,
one God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Amen.
New Year’s Day WORLD DAY OF PRAYER FOR PEACE
O God, who have revealed that peacemakers
are to be called your children.
Grant, we pray, that we may work without ceasing to
establish that justice which alone ensures
true and lasting peace.
Through our Lord Jesus Christ, Your Son, who lives and
reigns with you in the unity of The Holy Spirit, one
God, forever and ever. Amen. —from the Roman Missal
Give peace, O Lord, to those who wait for you;
Hear the prayers of your servants
And guide us in the way of justice.
I want to take this opportunity to thank all who in any way contributed to the beauty and dignity
of our Christmas Celebration. May the graces of Our Lord Jesus be with us always and lead all to His
Kingdom, a Kingdom opened to us by His coming into our world. Christmas indeed has changed
everything.
Wednesday of this week we begin 2020. New Year’s Day is a Holy Day and celebrating it at Mass
is the best way to begin the New Year. Please check the Mass schedule below for Mass times at our 4
churches. May 2020 be a time of peace throughout our world, more unity here at home and of great
blessings for all in our Parish and all those in our family.
Finally, on a personal note on behalf of Fr. Al and myself, I wish to thank all who remembered us at
Christmas with cards, gifts of food — especially homemade ones and other gifts from the heart. They are most appreciated.
Your thoughtfulness and kindness make our service to the parish a joy. May the Lord reward you many times over and bless our
parish of St. Matthias, made up of so many good and kind members throughout the year ahead.
The Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph 5
JANUARY IS THE MONTH OF
THE HOLY NAME OF JESUS By tradition, the Catholic Church dedi-
cates each month of the year to a certain
devotion. In January, it is the Holy Name of
Jesus. Through this devotion, the Church
reminds us of the power of Christ's Name
and encourages us to pray in His Name.
Keeping Christ's Name always on our lips is
a good way to ensure that we draw ever
nearer to Him.
Very early on, Christians came to understand that the
very name of Jesus had great power, and the recitation of His
Name was itself a form of prayer. This short prayer is a com-
bination of that early Christian practice and the prayer of-
fered by the publican in the parable of the Pharisee and the
publican (Luke 18:9-14). It is perhaps the most popular pray-
er among Eastern Christians, both Orthodox and Catholic,
who recite it using prayer ropes that are similar to Western
rosaries.
As St. Paul wrote in Philippians 2, “At the name of Je-
sus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things
in earth, and things under the earth; and every tongue
should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord.” Very early on,
Christians came to understand that the very name of Jesus
had great power, and the recitation of His Name was itself a
form of prayer.
St. Paul urges us to "pray without ceasing," and this pray-
er is one of the best ways to start doing so. It takes only a
few minutes to memorize, after which we can recite it when-
ever we remember to do so:
The Jesus Prayer O Lord Jesus Christ, Son of the living God,
have mercy on me, a sinner.
THANK YOU TO OUR BULLETIN SPONSORS Our Sunday bulletin is a primary way we use to com-
municate with you. Through our arrangement with Litur-
gical Publications, Inc. (Lpi), our parishes do not pay for
the bulletin printing, which saves us thousands of dollars
every year. Our bulletin is supported through the generos-
ity of the advertisers - many of whom are our own parish
members. Most are members of our local community.
During these difficult economic times, I urge you to sup-
port our advertisers with your patronage. Tell the business
owner that you appreciate their support of our parish
through their advertising in the bulletin. This is one small
way we can work within our own community to weather
these challenging times.
A strong and vibrant parish is good for our community
and a strong business community is good for our parish.
ANOINTING OF THE SICK MASS January 4 at 10:00 am at
St. Ann Worship Site On the first Saturday of the month, January 4, at
10:00 am at St. Ann Worship site there will be a Mass
of Healing and Anointing for those who are in need of
this special Sacrament for the Anointing of the Sick.
From month to month it will move around the parish
and be celebrated in the different worship sites
throughout the year. Please note that any parishioner
may attend these masses, you don’t have to need the
anointing to attend. We welcome your presence.
LECTOR WORKSHOP Saturday, January 18 at 10:00 am
St. Hugh Worship Site When the Sacred Scriptures are read in the Church,
God himself speaks to his people, and Christ, present in
his word, proclaims the Gospel. Therefore, the readings
from the Word of God are to be listened to reverently by
everyone, for they are an element of the greatest im-
portance in the Liturgy.
Have you felt a call to proclaim God’s word to others?
St. Matthias Parish will have a “parish workshop” for
those who are newly interested in or have been proclaim-
ing the word at our Sunday/Saturday Masses. We will
meet at St. Hugh Church in Carmichael's on Saturday
morning January 18th at 10:00 am for a workshop on this
important ministry for all the churches of our parish.
If you are interested please contact one of the
parish office centers to register for this important
workshop.

FAITH LIFE
Life can be overwhelming. Too many worries, too many places to be, too many items on the to-do list. Do you ever wish for some way—any way—to slow down and really consider what it’s all about? Where do you currently find your meaning? Where do you want to find meaning? Is it possible to be fulfilled? These are questions worth asking. Discovering Christ is for anyone who is curious. Enjoy a delicious dinner and listen to a thought-provoking talk that is designed to explore the meaning and purpose of your life. After the talk, you can share your thoughts in a small group (and talk as much or as little as you wish). It’s all done in a warm, friendly, and judgement-free environment. Discovering Christ is fun, relaxed, and free.

The Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph 7
Every Sunday at Mass, Catholics around the world hear 3 or 4 passages from the Bible. We end up listening to hun-dreds of passages from Scripture. Join us weekly as Dr. Brant Pitre takes us for an in-depth Bible study on the Gospel readings, connecting them with the Old Testament reading and Responsorial Psalm for each Sunday Mass. You will learn the meaning of passages, why the various readings were chosen and put together, and how the Old Testament reading points forward to the New Testament and how the New Testament fulfills the Old. Understand the Biblical roots of the Catholic faith and how the readings that are given to us each week are meant to be applied to our daily lives, walking with Christ as Disciples of the Lord.

PRESENTED BY: DR. EDWARD SRI (AM & PM SESSIONS)
Being Catholic takes more than simply believing in God or doing what
he asks of us. Jesus wants you to be more than just a believer—He wants
you to be his disciple and friend. Follow Me invites you to experience the
joy of a renewed friendship with Christ. You will learn what it takes to
follow Him. You will experience the joy of divine friendship, and you will
see how God— and only God—can satisfy the deepest desires of your
heart.
Each of the EIGHT sessions will have a 30-minute DVD presentation followed by a 30-minute group discussion on the
session’s questions. Dr. Edward Sri will guide you through the Gospel of John. Dr. Sri will explain how Christ’s en-
counters with others in the Gospel are examples of how He lovingly and persistently calls each of us to a more intimate
and life-changing relationship with Him.
Both sessions will be at St. Hugh Worship Site: Tuesdays, beginning February 11 through March 31, 2020

Prayer for the Sick
Father of goodness and love, hear
our prayers for the sick members
of our community
and for all who are in need.
Amid mental and physical
suffering may they find consola-
tion in your healing
presence.
Show your mercy as you close
wounds, cure illness, make bro-
ken bodies whole and free down-
cast spirits.
May these special people
find lasting health and
deliverance, and so join
us in thanking you
for all your gifts.
We ask this through the Lord
Jesus who healed those who believed. Amen.
