2019 COURSE OFFERINGS Thank you for your interest in learning to create a better working relationship between dentists, physical therapists, and their patients. This is an area of integrative medicine that is not taught by many, and is understood poorly by most. The patients you see desperately need for you to join the few who can serve them in this capacity, and require you to master your craft. In this course series, you will learn how oral interventions can give patients ways to inhibit certain references and to appreciate new references. The goal of this approach is to assist patients in connecting other parts of the body with the mouth and thus move in a healthier way. Included in this offering is a two day program to teach you how to recognize TMCC (PRI® term) issues, factor in airway and TMJ related issues, and to understand details of a well adjusted occlusal orthotic. You will also hone the communication between the parties involved. 2-DAY LECTURE COURSE 3-DAY INTENSIVE COURSE 1-DAY OBSERVATION COURSE This one-day course takes the dentist through case study, model and bite record preparations, and goes through splint fabrication and delivery. The observation will also cover detailed examination, CT interpretation, orthopedic and sensory referencing. The one-day physical therapy course includes observation of a full clinical day of new evals and re-evals, with a review of the patient’s exercise program progression and coaching on choosing the appropriate next intervention. This course is held in the dentist-participant’s office and takes dentists through his own patient cases from diagnosis to record taking, treatment planning and delivery of splints and ALFs. The goal of the course is to help dedicated dentists to refine their craft and master their touch in delivery of the high-quality care necessary for the sensitive patient to make the transition into total body health. Airway, TMJ, Sleep, and Postural issues are considered. Dentists and Physical Therapists together are invited to study side-by-side in this dynamic course. Starting with giving each profession the other’s language and then building on understanding of how each approaches patient diagnosis, a joint differential diagnosis can be better understood by all. The lecture series goes through the science behind the relationship of the teeth to the rest of the body, taking a deep dive into the postural influences that show up in the dentition, and the limitations the dental occlusion plays in a patient’s ability to access different movement patterns than the one habitually chosen.

2019 COURSE OFFERINGS

Thank you for your interest in learning to create a better working relationship between dentists, physical therapists, and their patients. This is an area of integrative medicine that is not taught by many, and is understood poorly by most. The patients you see desperately need for you to join

the few who can serve them in this capacity, and require you to master your craft.

In this course series, you will learn how oral interventions can give patients ways to inhibit certain references and to appreciate new references. The goal of this approach is to assist

patients in connecting other parts of the body with the mouth and thus move in a healthier way.

Included in this offering is a two day program to teach you how to recognize TMCC (PRI® term) issues, factor in airway and TMJ related issues, and to understand details of a well adjusted

occlusal orthotic. You will also hone the communication between the parties involved.

2-DAY LECTURE COURSE

3-DAY INTENSIVE COURSE

1-DAY OBSERVATION COURSEThis one-day course takes the dentist through case study, model and bite record preparations, and goes through splint fabrication and delivery.

Starting with giving each profession the other’s language and then building on

understanding of how each approaches patient diagnosis, a joint differential diagnosis can be better understood by all. The lecture series goes through the science behind the relationship of the teeth to the rest of the body, taking a deep dive into the postural

influences that show up in the dentition, and the limitations the dental occlusion plays in a patient’s ability to access different movement patterns than the one habitually chosen.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES, IDPT-1 COURSE AGENDA

IDPT-1 LEARNING OBJECTIVES

• Physical therapists to become familiar with general terms of dentistry related to occlusion

• Dentists to become familiar with physical therapy terms, specifically to PRI (R) terms of polyarticular muscle chains

• Learn about the different ways that teeth move during dynamic chewing

• Identify relevant areas of facial asymmetry as means of forecasting dental intervention

• Understand the influence of a TMJ disk position on a bite

• Understand the influence of the timing of a TMJ disk displacement on growth & development of the skeletalstructure and airway

• Understand that a bite distortion may be exaggerated or masked by cervical-cranial positioning

• Map out different dental management of an acute vs. chronic TMJ dysfunction

• Understand when a dentist should refer to physical therapist and vice versa, and when it is unnecessary to do so

• Become familiar with different splint designs, and the impact design has on cervical range of motion findings

• Know the elements of effective bite splint design for cervico-cranial neutrality

• Become familiar with managing splint design in altered occlusal schemes

• Identify an unmanaged cervico-cranial system using the patterns of abrasion on a splint

• Learn how to time the integration between a dentist and physical therapist

• Learn how to choose the correct dental intervention for the physical therapy patient

• Gain helpful tips in communicating between dentist and physical therapist

Introduction, opening remarks, participant involvement in their learning (workshop)

I didn’t learn about the WHOLE body in PT school: an orientation to the mouth from outside in. Profiles, skeletal classifications, TMJ function. How teeth work. Functionally generated path that teeth make. dentists care (tooth-level). Spotting altered occlusions, missing teeth, extra teeth, cross-bite, anterior open bite, posterior open bite.

I didn’t learn about the body in dental school: an overview of PT/PRI® nomenclature for dentists. Poly-articular chains, principles of asymmetry in human neuro-biomechanics. Partner exercise: assess skeletal and dental bite classifications.

Teeth, tongue TMJ and neck! Eyes and ears and mouth and nose! Reasons for cracked tooth syndrome, orthodontic relapse, bite collapse (VDO), tongue splinting. GERD. UARS, Apnea. Common postural presentations, TMJ dysfunctions, and dental problems in those occlusions.

Splint Integration: how working collaboratively has shaped our protocols.

Oral Splints: overview of different splints and their effects on necks. Literature supporting recommendations.

Splints 2.0 - how to manage splints in the case of alternative occlusal schemes, what to expect on splint durability, repairs and other tips that improve dental clinician’s ability to provide what is promised.

Choosing the Dental Intervention. case studies highlighting testing specific regions we often see overlooked. Determining if and when PT should bring in dentist, and to what degree, from splint to ALF to ortho/equilibration/restorative care. Other interventions - equilibrations, orthodontics, restorations. ALFs and other appliances. sleep appliances. problems with ideal interventions (continued…)

Timing the Integration: more case studies adjusting splints, ALF, occlusions, and in what direction, using HAdLT findings, splint findings, etc. How and when to modify home programs, discharge patient.

Creating your Partnership. useful language skills in discussing fees and insurance with interventions. developing partnerships. how IPT was created. How to create your own brand.evaluations, and dismissal.
