Prefixes
A prefix
• in front of a unit increases or decreases the size of that unit
• makes units larger or smaller that the initial unit by one or more factors of 10
• indicates a numerical value
prefix = value
1 kilometer = 1000 meters
1 kilogram = 1000 grams

Metric Equalities for Mass
• Several equalities can be written for mass in the metric (SI) system.
Example:
1 gram is the same mass as 1000 mg and 0.001 kg.
1 kg = 1000 g
1 g = 1000 mg
1 mg = 0.001 g
1 mg = 1000 µg
