Resolutions are good, they are starting places for progress, but for a resolution to be effective it must also be supported with planning and long-term discipline. It takes work to move from resolution to accomplishment. Tim Challies, one of my favorite Christian bloggers, shared some helpful advice for making New Year’s resolutions stick, and I’d like to share those with you so that you can advance beyond resolution and re- solve to realization of your goals. Resolve them prayerfully. December 31 is not the ideal time to come up with a list of resolutions, because the impulsive ones rarely stick. The best resolutions are the ones that come through thought and planning. Ac- tually, the best ones are the ones you pray about. If a resolution is worth making, surely it’s worth praying about. Resolve prayerfully, not impulsively. Plan them carefully. Once you have made your resolu- tion, you need to invest a little effort in planning. You need to plan how and when you will take the actions that go along with the resolution. Sheer willpower is enough to begin a new thing or to take the first steps against a bad thing, but eventually you will need something more. You will need to form a habit. To build or break a habit you need some kind of disci- pline that will help you do, or not do, certain behav- iors. So think carefully and plan how, when, and where you will build your habit. If you are looking for a list of potential resolutions for the new year, I have created a page on my blog at www.passionforpreaching.net with some resolutions and tools to help you accomplish your goals. Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. Philippians 4:6

Becausethenewyearalwaysmakesmethinkofnewthings, newbeginnings, andnewideas,Ithoughtnowwouldbeagreat timetotalkabout thechangescom-ing in the children’s ministry facilities. I know thatmany of you know that this includes a new buildingandpossiblerenovationsontheoldbuilding, butyoumay not know what all it includes. So many thingshavebeen taken intoaccount inour planning includ-ingneeds,wants,andwhatseemsliketheneverend-inglistofcountyandstatebuildingcodes.The first needwe looked atwas the need for a newspace for theolderchildren’sworship.Whenwefirststartedchildren’sworshiptenyearsago, wemet inaroom in the children’s building. At that time, the at-tendance of many of the children was sporadic sotherewere times thatwe only had eight to ten chil-dren. It was not long, however, whenwe found our-selveswith twoproblems. The firstwas a need for ayounger children’s worship. If you know anythingaboutme, you know that I have a hard time turningaway any child. Because of this, we soon found thatouragerangewasgettingwiderandwider.AsWarrenWeekstoldmeatthetime,“Prettysoon,Rhonda,ifyoukeepthisup,you’regoingtohavetoputcribsagainstthewallforthebabies.”Iwisely,Ithought,keptsilentinresponsetothismainlybecauseIcouldn’tfigureouthow to squeeze some cribs in there. The start of athreeandfouryearoldchildren’sworshipwasthere-sultofthis.Thatproblemwassolvedaspeoplebeganto stepuptotake theteachingpositionsthatbecameopenthroughthatneed.Soon, however,we found even by narrowing the agerangethatwewereoutofroom.Oneof theproblemsweoften findwhenweattempt to squeeze toomanychildrenintotoosmallaspaceisthatofpoorbehavior.Everyone begins to get into each others’ space thusgetting onto each others’ nerves. Then those whowouldnormallykeeptheirhandstothemselvesdon’tand arguments and fights begin. We found ourselvesdealing with this every Sunday. The solution was tomove to a room above the current sanctuary aftersomewallswere takenout to increase thespace.Wewere pleased and happy with our new space notingthatournewvisitorswereimpressedaswell.Happiness, however, is often short lived as was thecase then. I received a phone call from Pastor Craigone day (A phone call is a rarity as email is his pre-ferred form of communication so I knew something

wasup.)Duringthatphonecall, hesaidthatwecouldnotwaitanylongerforthecongregationtomoveintowhat was then a gym. Since I’ve studied enoughchurch growth statistics to know that attendancegrowthisstuntedwhentheroomgets80%full,Ihadto agreewithhim though Iwasn’t happyabout it. Atthis time, it was suggested that children’s worshipmovetowhatwouldthenbecomethe formersanctu-ary. I had great doubts about how thiswas going towork, butwe reallyhad no choice as thatwas reallytheonlyoption.

Now at long last,we find ourselves at another stage, butmuchplanninghadtobedonefirst.Welookedatadding on to the current children’sbuilding, but thatdidn’t work. The final and most viable solution wasputting another building in behind the current one.Thatideabegantoevolveintowhatwebelievedtobethebestsolutionfornowandthefutureofthechurch.Wedrewoutplans for thisbuildingneverbeing fullysatisfieduntilaboutthetenthtime,wefinallyagreed.Thebuildingwillhousetheolderchildren’sworship,amulti-purpose room thatwillbeusedbyall age chil-dren, two small bathrooms, a snack area, a room tostore and prepare snacks, and a storage area. Eventhough the building will be one story, there will bestoragespaceabovethatcanbereachedfromoutsidestairs.

Anotherthingwelookedatwastheneedsofthecur-rentbuilding.Wedeterminedthattherearesafetyis-sues, user issues, and aesthetic issues needing to beaddressed. After much deliberation, we met with acontractortogetaquoteonreplacingall theexteriordoors,replacingtheFRPboardwithbeadboard,mak-ingthepreschoolbathroomspreschoolfriendly,mak-ing the current kitchen/snack area into a classroomfor the 15 months through 2 year olds, doing someworkonthecurrentbabiesnursery,creatingacheck-in area, moving some walls to give more space toovercrowded classrooms, finishing out supply cabi-netsthatposesafetyrisksforhead/eyeinjuriesincer-tainclassrooms,andsomeotherwallrepairandpaint-ing.Whether any, some, or all of those will be donewillbedeterminedbyhowmuch if anymoney is leftover from the sanctuaryaddition/renovationand thenewchildren’sbuilding.
